A Midwest state with coastlines on two of the Great Lakes—Superior and Michigan, Wisconsin’s interior is characterized by forests, such as the Chequamegon-Nicolet National Forest in the northern part, and farms, especially dairy farms. Wisconsin leads the nation in cheese production with 25% of America’s cheese. The state’s 7000 dairy farms with 1.27 million cows average 21,436 lbs of milk annually, with 90% utilized to produce 2.8 billion lbs of cheese, ranging from mozzarella, cheddar, Italian varieties, feta, Mexican, American, muenster and Swiss to gorgonzola and gouda! Wisconsin has more skilled, licensed cheesemakers than any other state and is the only to offer a Master Cheesemaker program, similar to Europe. Wisconsin farms produce 50% of the nation's cranberries, 97% of its ginseng, and is a major producer of oats, potatoes, carrots, tart cherries, maple syrup, and sweet corn. And Wisconsin is famed for its beer, historically in Milwaukee which was the headquarters of Miller Brewing Company until it merged with Coors in 2008. Miller was founded by German immigrant, Frederick Miller in 1855 and the company was owned and operated by generations of family until 1966. The brewery continues to operate in the same site in Milwaukee.

Another American icon that began in 1903 in Milwaukee, is the Harley-Davidson Company, founded by William Harley and brothers, Walter and Arthur Davidson, to become one of the most successful motorcycle companies in the world. Harley-Davidson was one of the only two motorcycle companies to survive the Great Depression and was awarded for producing 90,000 motorcycles for the military during WWII. Today, the company is headquartered in the site of their first factory and has a global distribution. The Harley-Davidson Museum displays over 100 years of history in 3 buildings located on 20 acres along the Menomonee River.

Milwaukee is Wisconsin’s largest city and metro area with many great attractions and history. The Milwaukee Public Museum is a state-of-the-art natural history museum that was chartered in 1882 and opened to the public in 1884. It features 3 floors of exhibits and the first Dome Theater in Wisconsin. Turn-of-the-century streets of Milwaukee and European villages from the 1875-1925 period were re-created with homes and shops as walk-through historical dioramas. Milwaukee’s historic Third Ward is a revitalized warehouse district with the award-winning Third Ward Riverwalk and Milwaukee Public Market which opened in 2005 and is based on Seattle’s Pike Place. It features mostly food vendors—bakery, meats, produce, cheese, seafood, soup, wine, coffee, spices, and candy. Also, flowers, gifts, and apparel. The Third Ward district offers an interesting variety of dining choices, boutiques, art, and cultural attractions. The Pabst Mansion was built in 1892 in the Flemish Renaissance Revival style for Capt. Frederick Pabst, founder of Pabst Brewing Company. Placed on the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) in 1975, it is now a historic house museum with public tours. The Milwaukee Art Museum with 30,000 works of art has become an icon of Milwaukee with 3 distinctive buildings designed by renowned architects—Eero Saarinen, David Kahler, and Santiago Calatrava and its roots go back to 1888. Museum includes works of artist Georgia O’Keefe, a Wisconsin native.

First held in 1968, Summerfest is an annual music festival held in downtown Milwaukee in Henry Maier Festival Park adjacent to Lake Michigan and the central business district of Milwaukee. The 75-acre park features 12 stages, production space, VIP amenities, and other infrastructure, bars, shopping, fireworks, and food. The event draws an international audience for its world-class musical performances. During the 19th and 20th centuries, immigrants were predominantly from Germany and Scandinavia and today they remain a center of both cultural heritages, especially in their cuisines. German is the largest ancestry group of Wisconsin, and the state has the highest percentage of Polish ancestry than any other state. There are also eleven federally recognized Native American tribes that continue to reside in Wisconsin. The Potawatomi Hotel & Casino is Native American owned and operated by the Forest County Potawatomi Community. The casino first opened in 1991 near downtown Milwaukee as an entertainment destination offering a 20-table poker room, other casino games, restaurants and other eateries, Northern Lights Theater, Sky Lodge (smoke-free casino), and a 500-seat 2-tiered theater with dining. Wisconsin has one UNESCO World Heritage Site, added 2019, as “The 20th Century Architecture of Frank Lloyd Wright” and includes Taliesin, his studio near Spring Green and the 1937 Jacobs I House in Madison. Frank Lloyd Wright’s Taliesin home and studio continue as an architectural office and school decades after his death. Also near Spring Green is the House on the Rock that opened in 1960 atop Deer Shelter Rock and is a complex featuring “The Streets of Yesterday,” Heritage of the Sea, Music of Yesterday, “the world’s largest indoor carousel,” and other attractions designed by Alex Jordan Jr. Tourism is the third largest industry in Wisconsin today, and the state has a lot to offer year-round, but especially during the summer season with its large quantity of lakes and rivers. Recreational fishing is a $300 million industry. Lake Winnebago in east central Wisconsin is one of the state’s busiest and most fished, as one of the nation's top walleye fisheries. The lake is part of the Winnebago Pool System of lakes and has 88 miles of shoreline. The shallow freshwater lake (average 15.5ft depth, deepest at 21ft), covers 137,700 acres and is the largest lake entirely within the state. The Wolf and Fox Rivers are its primary tributaries and run through the lake to empty into Green Bay (Lake Michigan). Lake Winnebago is very popular for pleasure boating.

The North Country area, a former timber industry center, has been transformed to a vacation destination for hunting and fishing. The North Country National Scenic Trail (South Dakota to Vermont) runs 220 miles in northern Wisconsin. The hiking trail passes through 61 miles of the Chequamegon-Nicolet National Forest. Strictly for hiking, no motorized vehicles, bicycles, or horses are permitted, but some areas allow cross-country skiing in winter. The Dells of Wisconsin River State Natural Area is a 5-mile gorge on the Wisconsin River with exceptional scenic beauty and unique sandstone rock formations and canyons best viewed from the water. Dells Army Duck Tours are WWII army amphibious vehicles repurposed for touring this amazing natural wonder. The nearby city of Wisconsin Dells dubbed, “Waterpark Capital of the World,” draws summer tourists to its theme parks—Mt Olympus Water & Theme Park and Noah’s Art Waterpark, are very popular. Noah’s Ark Waterpark in Lake Delton is the largest outdoor water park in the USA and features 51 water slides and dozens of attractions. South of the waterpark area is the Circus World Museum in Baraboo, Wisconsin. The museum complex features circus history, as Baraboo was once home to Ringling Brothers Circus and where they wintered. In 1884, Ringling Brothers began their first circus wagon tour from Baraboo, later traveling by railcars. The museum holds one of the largest collections of circus paraphernalia in the world.

Door County’s Door Peninsula extending off of the eastern coast of Wisconsin is a popular destination for boaters for its natural harbors, bays and boat launches located on both Green Bay and Lake Michigan sides of the peninsula. This easternmost county in Wisconsin is named for the dangerous passage between Door Peninsula and Washington Island, a strait called “Death’s Door” and is loaded with shipwrecks. Over 22 million visitors annually are drawn to the quaint villages, cherry picking, and fish boils—a Scandinavian tradition.

The Apostle Islands National Lakeshore in Bayfield consists of 21 island and nearly 70,000 acres on Wisconsin’s northern tip on the shore of Lake Superior. The area is known for its historic lighthouses, magnificent sandstone sea caves, old growth remnant forests, and animal habitats. Lake Superior is the largest, cleanest, and coldest of the Great Lakes. Water-based outdoor recreation is extremely popular in Wisconsin; about 2.5 million Wisconsin residents participate in boating, going to beaches, fishing, or swimming in the state’s many lakes and streams, along with Lake Michigan and Mississippi River regions that provide miles of shoreline for recreational activities. The deep-water marina features 30ft-50ft slips and a T-dock for vessels 55ft and over. -Hi Seas Marina (Oconto) on Green Bay accommodates vessels up to 70ft LOA. -High Cliff State Park Marina (Sherwood) is the only state-owned recreational facility on Lake Winnebago.
