The Leopard 48, which was launched in 2012, was one of the most popular cruising cats ever designed. But the design was beginning to become dated, even as new orders kept coming in. So, Robertson & Caine, who build the Leopard cats, set out to improve on what was already great. The new 50 was their answer and comes with many innovations that will make owners happy. We test sailed the 50L last winter in Florida. The L version has the optional lounge on top of the hardtop over the cockpit. Unlike some cats with flying bridges and lounges up high, the 50L doesn’t feel like a layer wedding cake.
The steering station is a traditional raised helm to starboard, and the lounge is just up a few stairs from there. The helmsman is in contact with those in the main cockpit and those in the lounge. Out sailing, we got the 50L up to 10 knots in a good breeze, so the boat is fast. It is also commodious and will make a very comfortable home for a family or a charter party.

Price: From $450k To $1.5 Million on the Used Market
Leopard 58 is a superb layout from Leopard, skilfully modeled by award-winning designers Robertson & Caine. This extravagant catamaran is suited to the prolific and innovative catamarans that have made Leopard famous while still giving out fresh features and various design options.
This expansive FlyBridge takes space to a whole new dimension as it is larger than its siblings with their award-winning aspects. Equipped with a three or four-cabin design that affords the owner’s cabin expansive living space, great storage, high aspect riders, daggerboards, an elegant fit/finish, and infused carbon-reinforced construction.
Seawind 1600

The new Seawind 1600 has been in the works for a while and has finally arrived on the market. The Reichel Pugh design is a departure from the more conservative looks of the other Seawinds and embraces a very Euro-style with plumb bows, hard chines, a swept-back cabin, and a large open cockpit with helm stations on both sides. Multihull impresario, dealer, and broker Phil Berman (The Multihull Company) has sold more multihulls over the last 30 years than just about anyone. His latest project has been the development of the Balance line of performance cruising cats. The queen of the line is the Balance 526 that was introduced a few years ago and has proven to be a very successful player in the 50-foot plus segment of the cat market. Built in South Africa by noted composite experts, the 526 offers a well-conceived combination of great sailing performance and luxury living in a boat that can be handled by an experienced couple.
The boat has plenty of innovations, among them a helm that can be tilted up so you can steer from the raised helm station or tilted down so you can steer from the protection of the cockpit. Very cool. The design does not take any particular element to the “extreme.” Instead, Berman and his crew have sought to provide a boat that is truly well balanced in all aspects. And, they’ve done it.

Sud initially built about 18 of these classic catamarans from 2001 to 2007.

Catana Ocean Class
Description
We first saw the Catana Ocean Class, a 50 footer, at La Grand Motte in 2022 where she was one of the main attractions of the International Multihull show. The layout is a bit of a departure for Catana (although they have launched similar helm set ups back in the day), as she has a raised mid-position helm on the starboard side.
Catana were famous prior to that for their sporty twin aft-helms configuration. I think that this will probably widen their market but it might upset a few Catana traditionalists.
The French manufacturer hadn’t launched a new model since the 2016 launch of the 53, as they were focusing on their Bali Catamarans range. Let’s see if they expand the range after the launch of the OC50.

Judging from the reception the boat was getting at the show, this model should do well. This isn’t an “out and out” performance boat like a Marsaudon, but it offers a fantastic mix of performance and comfort that should prove popular. You get a nav station that looks like it belongs in Star Trek AND a full sized American fridge/freezer.
She’s stiff and strong thanks to decades of “carbon infusion” experience in building performance yachts at Catana, and with those daggerboards she should sail upwind well.

- To get to the helm, you need to walk round onto the starboard deck. No big deal, but you are separated from the “pack” inside, although the starboard aft window slides right open.
- Does look a bit like a Bali on steroids.

She certainly looks seaworthy with her boxy, muscly profile and high freeboard. The Ocean Class carries the same amount of mainsail (90 sqm.) as her bigger sister: the 53.
The nacelle is 90cm above the water – this boat sits high on the water, which will help her power through big waves.
You can set the boat up with either an overlapping genoa (64m²) or a self tacking solent (50m²). In lighter winds, you can fly a Code O (105 m²) or a gennaker (130 m²) off the bowsprit. Light displacement is 14.5 T and she will soak up to 4.5 T of weight.
Like all Catanas, the Ocean Class has a bridle system for the mainsheet rather than a traveler. The windward sheet functions as the mainsheet/traveler while the leeward one is used to flatten the sail.
The disadvantage of this is that the main is not strictly self-tacking: on each tack, you need to release the leeward sheet( as it will become the windward one on the new tack) and flatten the sail by tightening the new leeward sheet. But, you can trim your mainsail very effectively with this kind of system and I know that Catana owner’s swear by it.
All of the lines run back to the single raised helm (except the light wind sails of course). This boat has been designed to be sailed by a couple, and the visibility from the helm to all 4 corners is good (although you need to duck around a bit to see the aft port side).
The Catana Ocean Class is powered by 2x 45HP engines (there is an upgrade available to 57) which will power you along at 7 knots and over with a decent sea state. Or just use one engine and cruise at 6 knots. She will carry up to 800L / 211 US gal of diesel.
Construction
The Catana Ocean Class is built with foam coring and vinylester resin infused into the hulls, decks and bulkheads, with added carbon fiber and Twaron cloth to increase strength and stiffness in high stress areas. She is a strong rigid boat.
Living Space
This is an area where Catana have put some blue water between themselves and the competition. Despite the mid position helm, the living space up top is very generous and well laid out. Stepping up the aft steps on the sugar scoops, you arrive at a wide aft deck area with winches on either side for your lighter wind sails.
An aft bench runs along the transom and then you are through the sliding doors that open right up to maximise the living space on one level.
Aft of the saloon is an L-shaped sofa area (room for 5) around a folding table. Along the starboard side runs a storage area and 2 pull out fridges. A sliding window opens fully to connect to the raised helm position on the starboard side.
Moving forward, there is a substantial nav station to port with a great looking helm seat. To starboard, is another large L-shaped sofa running along by the forward windowns which open right up.
The galley (with sink and a half) is positioned centrally to port behind the nav station leaving room for the full size American fridge-freezer to port and a central drinks cabinet and bar area behind the mast. It’s a well thought out design. The height of the roof in the saloon is 2.13m
The only thing that would worry me is the position of the sliding doors which are well aft. This has the benefit of giving you a huge enclosed space at anchor, but I would worry in a big following sea.
There are 3 basic configurations:
- Owner’s version with owner’s suite in the port hull with shower and seperate head forward
- Four Cabin version with twin bunks aft (that convert into a double), and seperate head and shower in each hull
- Four Cabin version with twin bunks aft (that convert into a double), and twin head and shower units in each hull
The finish is light oak effect and looks very smart. The quality doesn’t match the level you would see on a Balance or HH. They are aiming for a level on par with an Outremer.
The storage space looks well thought out and the whole feel is very light and airy, similar to the Catana 53. The height down here is a roomy 2m.

This model represents a clever positioning from Catana, a great combination of performance, comfort and value that is pretty unique in the market. Its closest competitor is probably the Seawind 1600. Let’s see if they extend the range with this format and launch a 47 and a 42.
How much is the Catana Ocean Class? What is the price of this catamaran? As always, we will qualify this answer with “it depends on the options you go for”, but the price range starts from €1068,000. Expect to pay from €1.25m to €1.4m for a fully equipped boat, depending on the options you go for. That’s pretty competitive versus the competition.

Winner of The Multihull of The Year Award 2018, the British Yachting Awards 2018, and the Sail’s Best Boat of The Year Award of 2019, the Lagoon 50 catamaran offers some thoughtful and innovative features. Some parts of the catamaran – such as the cockpit and the saloon – have been completely redesigned.

DESIGN – INTERIOR & EXTERIOR
The interior design of the Lagoon 50 is a product of the Nauta Design while Patrick Le Quement and VPLP Design gave shape to its exterior. The Lagoon 50 catamaran, with its rich and dark Alpi Walnut plywood construction and UV varnish finishing, comes with three, four, and even six cabin layouts and provides a generous amount of volume and space.
The aft cockpit of the Lagoon 50 can be easily accessed through two low transom steps and houses a polyester table to port that can be extended to accommodate up to 10 people and folded away when not needed. The seat is also removable and can be moved away when the table is extended. The aft cockpit itself has a galley, complete with its own countertops for drink and food preparation, a sink, a refrigerator and a few bottle holders. The forward cockpit has seats with two storage lockers underneath them and two trampolines.
Lagoon 50 catamaran has a large flybridge with a helm station which comes not only with a separate recreational area but also has storage space behind it. The helm seat at the station is spacious enough to accommodate up to 4 people, including the helm person, and the station is made comfortable by triple sun beds, back and knee rests behind the helm seat. The helm offers enough visibility for navigation to not be a problem but since the helm seat is right in the center, the view from directly behind the steering wheel is obstructed by the mast.
The helm station has an ideally angled dashboard, equipped with a B&G multifunction display and autopilot amongst other instruments. All the lines and the self-tacking jib sheets are managed with three Harken winches. There are also three integrated sheet bins to manage the sheets, a halyard and an electric drum to manage the continuous traveler sheet.
ACCOMODATIONS
In a three cabin version, the aft cabin of the Lagoon 50 catamaran has a double bed with lateral access and a drawer underneath, two bedside tables, and a shelf. There is enough storage space with a full-height locker, wardrobe, and bookcase. The deck hatch above the bed allows for ventilation and light. The aft bathroom has a manual toilet, a separate shower with Plexiglass door, multiple storage units and fixed window. The forward cabin and bathroom offer the same facilities but the owner’s suite is slightly more lavish with multiple bookcases, a sofa, a desk, its own bathroom with separate shower and toilet areas, and a walk-in closet.
Leveled with the cockpit, the saloon of the Lagoon 50 is a laid-back, comfortable living space that has plenty of room for entertaining guests or hosting a party. It is covered with a hard-top Bimini and houses a U-shaped sofa with a dining table and a fully-equipped chart table. The characteristic Lagoon vertical windows wrap around the saloon giving an almost continuous panoramic view while also maintaining the temperature and preventing the inside from heating up.
Lagoon 50 also has a dedicated space for the navigation station which comes equipped with a B&G MFD, a VHF, and autopilot on a navigation desk covered in leather.
The galley is L-shaped and accessed through a sliding door. It has a four-burner gas stove and a gas oven, fully integrated sink with storage cupboards, shelves, drawers, and lockers. The galley also has a 190 liters, stainless steel drawer fridge. Between the living space and the cockpit, the galley has enough space for food preparation to be done by multiple people without coming in each other’s way and allows enough room for food and drinks to be stored. The drinks and such can be directly served through the window that opens into the forward cockpit.
ENGINE ROOMS
The two engine rooms of the Lagoon 50 catamaran house one 57 HP Yanmar diesel engines each with sail drives and folding propellers. The engine rooms are accessed through hatches that open up and aft so that they can be safely accessed from the cockpit without having to expose oneself on the steps. The engine rooms have enough space for maintenance checks.
TECHNICAL SPECIFICATIONS
The overall length of the Lagoon 50 catamaran is 14.75 meters while the maximum beam is 8.10 meters. With the displacement of 19.9 tons, Lagoon 50 catamaran has an air draft of 26. 51 meters and a draft of 1.40 meters. It has a total freshwater capacity of 2 x 240 liters and a fuel capacity of 2 x 520 liters.

The performance has also been optimized by a greater aspect ratio of the mainsail and the moving of the mast further aft. All in all, Lagoon 50 does justice to the price tag it comes with.

 Mystic 50 Open Cockpit: The Ultimate Pleasure CatLet’s get this out of the way right now. A 50-foot catamaran with 3,600-hp worth of turbine engines, six seats in the cockpit, no cabin, and a sticker price of $1.6 million is not a “rational” purchase. First, nobody actual needs—quite a different word than wants—one. Second, there are better investments out there. Lots of them. On the other hand, if you’re into really high-performance boats, it’s hard to see Mystic Powerboats ’ latest creation, an open-cockpit 50-footer, as anything less than a dreamboat. Owned by Paul Iser and tagged Fly Boy, the new model is the first Mystic 50’ catamaran to have an open cockpit—and, as such, to be labeled a “pleasure boat.” To date, Mystic founder John Cosker has overseen the creation of 11 of his prized 50-footers—nearly all with full canopies and turbine power, most of which were handled by John Arruda at Turbine Marine. All except for the most recent offering have been used for offshore racing. (Cosker says he considers the four-seater he built for performance-boat enthusiast Don Onken “a race boat,” because in essence it’s a canopied model with an open top.) The most notable still-active 50’ Mystic racer is Miss Geico , which is piloted by Marc Granet and Scott Begovich. It has power from Whispering Turbines and runs, for all intents and purposes, in a class of its own. Another turbine-powered 50’ Mystic, Aqua-Mania, occasionally competes with Miss Geico, as did JBS Racing (yet another turbine-powered 50’ Mystic) before owner Jeff Stevenson exited the offshore competition world. And there is the 50’ Mystic Nauti-Marine, powered by alcohol piston engines and piloted by well-known racer David Scott and throttling legend John Tomlinson. At last year’s Lake of the Ozarks Shoot, the boat posted a liquid-mile top speed of 218 mph.  2022 Boat of the Year: Best Cruising Catamaran (Over 50’)
During and in the four days immediately following the US Sailboat show in Annapolis, Maryland, the Cruising World judges inspected and sailed on 27 boats vying for recognition. Learn more about the boats in our 2022 Boat of the Year » Are they really all-around cruising sailboats, or are they luxurious and large party platforms that are best-suited for crewed charter vacations in tropical settings? That was once a fair, probing question to ask of the builders knocking off long, tall, beamy vessels balanced on a pair of cabin-filled hulls. But no longer. Despite their respective girths and displacements, not to mention a wide variety of windspeeds and sea states, this quartet of full-size cats performed admirably across the board in this year’s BOTY sea trials. Yes, they now truck along like good, honest sailboats. All that room is icing on the cake. At the end of the day, however, it’s how that space is utilized that separates the king and the contenders. Destined almost exclusively for the charter trade, the judges believed the Voyage 590 would truly excel in that role, so much so that they ultimately recognized it with a special award as the year’s Best Charter Boat. But that didn’t mean they did not consider it an innovative, exciting vessel on its total merits. “It’s a ‘techie’ boat, and they’re doing a lot of cool things with lithium batteries and 24-volt systems,” judge Ed Sherman said. “In terms of systems integration, they’re using high-end inverters to help out with things like variable-speed air-conditioning systems so they won’t have to run generators for extended periods of times. It’s pretty cool stuff. And under power, it’s one of the quietest boats we tested. High marks all around!”  Lagoon Catamarans, as most multihull sailors know, was one of the era’s true pioneers in the evolving world of cruising cats. Their new Lagoon Sixty 5 is another vessel that, not unlike the Voyage 590, will find plenty of duty in the serious business of having fun: in other words, the charter business. And it would be hard to find a better vessel for doing precisely that. The focal point of the boat, on multiple levels, is the epic flybridge, a feature that Lagoon first explored on a big cat with the firm’s 620 but which they have fully realized on this massive 67-footer. It utilizes a pair of steering stations, which are handy indeed given the beam of the yacht. The overhead Bimini sports a glass window for trimming the mainsail, a welcome and innovative addition. Sofas, wet bar, grill, fridge: all combined, they ask an important question, one that strikes to the heart of the boat’s clear purpose. Why would you ever go below?  In many respects, Fountaine Pajot was unquestionably another pioneer in the realm of production cruising cats, and it’s been fascinating to watch the company evolve. Tim Murphy has had a ringside seat for much of that decades-long evolution. “It’s been interesting to watch their trajectory over the years,” he said. “They started out as a very performance-oriented manufacturer. So, a lot of their thinking is about keeping weight out of their boats and creating cats that are going to perform well. Now they’re more in a market that’s moved in the direction of accommodation, and we’ve watched them transition in that direction. But speed and elegance remain important, as shown here.” A key selling point in the Samana 59 is the versatility offered in the several optional interior layouts. A pair of Maestro versions incorporate a roomy, stellar owner’s suite. But for full-on chartering, who could resist the six (!) double cabins with, of course, a half-dozen accompanying heads.  When all was said and done, though, the judges couldn’t help but honor the efforts behind the Xquisite X5 Plus ; it must be noted that, unlike its competitors in the class, chartering wasn’t part of the design brief. This is a dedicated cruising cat, through and through. And there’s much to like about this 53-foot South African-built product. For judge Tim Murphy, the important details weren’t necessarily the ones you could easily see, but rather the ones you couldn’t. “What I was most struck by on our tour of the boat was actually the service side of the whole equation,” he said. “There are 40,000 man-hours invested in this boat. And you can see it—those are solid hours of labor. One thing that was pointed out were two different marks on the heads of bolts showing they were torqued. And part of the Xquisite program is they spend two weeks with each owner, training them up with systems. All told, this is really one strong product.”  Judge Ed Sherman agreed: “The business model here is exemplary. What they’re really doing is emulating the high-end automotive market. I think they looked at the automotive sector for high-end cars like BMW and Mercedes and said, ‘OK, this sounds good, it looks good, and we’re going to do it, too.’ And they are. So, I think that that aspect of his business plan where they’re training the owners and then doing things like loading the boat up with spare parts as part of the original purchase, I mean, hats off to them. It’s a great way to go. How can you argue against it?” “I couldn’t find anything that was done halfway,” said Gerry Douglas. “It was done better than you’d expect it to be, just because they wanted the boat to be perfect. And the quality of construction is excellent. It’s an infused hull but with a hand-laminated deck because there’s so many very tight corners and cavities. They didn’t think they could infuse that without adding a whole lot of weight. And I get that. So, they would hand laminate it, which makes sense when you have some of the very sharp corners that exist on that boat. It was all just perfectly done.” Sometimes coming to a decision is hard. Sometimes it’s obvious. And when the votes were tallied, it was the Xquisite X5 Plus that was the obvious choice as Best Cruising Catamaran (Over 50’) for 2022.

Usually, manufacturers undertake light restyling fairly often on their models, but it’s a different story here, with the 46: apart from the Marc Lombard hulls, which remain identical - even though the topsides will now feature larger openings - everything else has been redesigned and redrawn. The accommodation and deck layout are therefore new. The rig is now a little more powerful, gaining 2 m² (21½ sq ft) of sail area. The version we tried, with carbon mast, Dyneema rigging and membrane sails is particularly attractive... but even without these luxurious options, the Saona shows interesting potential. Ocean. Class. We first saw the Catana Ocean Class, a 50 footer, at La Grand Motte in 2022 where she was one of the main attractions of the International Multihull show. The layout is a bit of a departure for Catana (although they have launched similar helm set ups back in the day), as she has a raised mid-position helm on the starboard side.
