A smart picnic boat for cruising in fine style and great comfort.
When you work on the waterfront and see a lot of boats you soon appreciate what lasts and what does not. It’s from this viewpoint that Will Manning launched a picnic boat with proven pedigree, high efficiency, sweet performance, but low maintenance and no stress… ultimately for greater pleasure of ownership in the long run.
OVERVIEW - A boutique picnic boat with great pedigree Will Manning grew up around boats on Sydney Harbour and his dad was an accomplished sailor. But it’s been his more recent rather than formative years running Sydney Harbour Slipways at Kirribilli, and servicing boats also through his mobile Bowline Marine dive business, that has really opened his eyes to what lies above and below the water.
While maintenance is the key to any boat’s longevity and pleasure of ownership, Will has seen too many otherwise decent craft deteriorate before his very eyes. He also sells boutique boats through his Sydney Harbour Sales brokerage and knows that not everyone is steered down the right path in the boat-buying process.
Business partner Peter Klumper, a diesel/marine technician by trade, has an equally long history and awakening in the marine industry. Together, they felt there was room for a smarter pleasure boat on Sydney Harbour. Then one thing led to another and they stumbled on a picnic boat designed by esteemed Naval Architect Andy Dovell that ticked the boxes and deserved a second chance.
Formerly the Azzura 33 Commuter , a boat that always impressed this scribe since my test in 2002, the reborn Salacia 34 is the Sydney enthusiasts’ dream come true and, they hope, that of other thinking boaters.
Will and Peter have taken a good thing and made it better, visually through some styling tweaks, ergonomically through some moulding changes, and with the latest single common-rail 300hp Volvo Penta D4 engine with shaft drive, docking thrusters and push-button electronics, it’s an easy boat to command.
The resulting Salacia 34 is a true modern classic, with sweet single shaft-driven performance and low maintenance, topped with plenty of that old-school charm and virtue.
PRICE AND EQUIPMENT - Plenty of options to create you own salacious 34 The Salacia 34 costs from $440k, but our fully loaded demonstrator was $550k as tested. That puts it up with the competition, but the Salacia 34 also has a unique line and style that’s perhaps more exclusive and fitting for yachties who admire such things.
With the latest 300hp Volvo Penta D4 diesel shaftdrive, bow and optional stern thrusters with remote controller, Zip-wake self-levelling trim tabs, Fusion stereo, inverter, teak decks, hardtop and more, our test boat was a beautiful example of Will’s and Peter’s vision for a smart Sydney dayboat and weekender for two.
LAYOUT AND ACCOMMODATION - A comfy Sunday cruiser and cosy overnighter Starting at the blunt end, the extended swim platform adds considerably to this boat's real estate. In fact, there’s room for a couple of folding chairs on the swim platform while you do breakfast and the ducks demand a handout. With a U-bar for a barbecue or tying a tender, you have it all.
A transom door leads into the spacious cockpit that will resonate with Aussie boaters. With a transom lounge and L-shaped aft-facing lounge, you can seat a family of four. For a couple, that aft L-shaped lounge and the high-gloss timber table create the perfect dining setting overlooking the views out yonder.
A champagne bottle cooler and glass cabinet within arm’s reach mean sunsets will never be lonely. Add that barbie on the aft rail and your eggs and bacon will be served in the Sunday morning haze.
Walkaround decks lead to the foredeck, backed by grab rails on the hardtop, with a Muir windlass and 50m of galvanised chain to the anchor. It’s a safe a passage going forward. In fact, you could easily throw a paddle board on the hardtop, a wooden retro model to match. Meanwhile, all the deck gear is first rate and sturdy.
The helm deck is as simple and functional as it is mindful of your driving needs. The windscreen, with its new more complementary rake, affords protection without compromising vision, while the chunky timber wheel adds to your authority. The new dash includes a dedicated second brow and mounting place for today's 9in Raymarine MFD.
With an offset companionway, the helm has room for a two-person bench or ‘love seat’ to starboard. It's ideal for cruising with your companion. All told, there’s seating for six up top and, with the upgraded Zipwake automatic trim tab system, you can ensure the boat remains on an even keel. Volvo’s electronic shifts and the bow and stern thrusters add to the driving pleasure.
Down below, there’s full headroom, a dinette with opposing lounges perfect for card nights or board games, an enclosed head with hot shower and freshwater Techma loo, plus a double bed in the bow with memory-foam mattress. Together, your get true weekending accommodation, plus a lower galley with fridge and microwave oven for winter reheats and eats.
At the same time, the cabin uses enough timber to create a warm atmosphere, while continuing with the low-maintenance theme via large moulded surfaces. Vinyl-weave floor matting and LED lighting add to the charm, while opening portlights deliver fresh air. With 200lt of water, you can definitely weekend away.
HULL AND ENGINEERING - Slippery low-wake hull with common rail diesel shaftdrive The low-drag, low-wake warped plane hull from Andy Dovell is nothing if not slippery. It’s in the same vein as his other designs like, say, the Palm Beach and old Azzura boats. The hull and deck are hand laid, but there are significant modifications.
The cabin was remodelled and raised in height; the windscreen angle was improved; the swim platform was extended (it’s now 750mm deep); there’s a transom door for a walk-though cockpit; re-engineered thrusters for more grunt; and an optional moulded hardtop rather than just the bimini. Push-button access lifts the helm deck for direct access to the engine and mechanical equipment. You will be hard pressed to find an easier boat to perform engine checks and servicing.
With the 1800W inverter and extra batteries, you can run the microwave and plug-in 240V appliances away from dock. A 4kg gas bottle feeds the cook top, the fridge is a 12V number, while hot water comes from the heat exchanger and Raritan 45lt hot-water service.
The engineering, wiring, fit and finish are all fist rate, accessible, serviceable and easy to maintain. The 325lt of fuel will serve the intended role of this boat and its 300hp common-rail Volvo Penta diesel, spinning a four-blade pop on a stainless 2in shaft. Simple and sturdy engineering.
ON THE WATER - Smooth, seaworthy and salacious Slipping along Middle Harbour and then out through Sydney Heads in a fair tempest, the Salacia 34 felt eager and efficient. It’s got that race-yacht-like feel as its fine entry slices the waves and it lifts up on its flat aft sections for a very efficient ride.
It is the helming pleasure and charming looks that make this pretty little picnic boat such a winner. With the timber wheel in my hand, Will and I cruised about with the wind in our hair, gaining an instant feeling of freedom much live driving, say, an MG.
Top speed is about 24 knots, but the boat planes without any noticeable transition or bow lift from 10 knots and beyond. In the sensible 19-20 knot range, it’s right in the cruising groove. Sound levels are good, but perhaps there’s scope to improve that aspect a tad.
Off-the-wheel steering is snappy for a shaft-driven boat and the Salacia 34 pulls a nice arc while turning flat.
We stayed dry throughout our test out between The Heads in a building sea, with just one lick over the bow as I hooked it around for home.
As such, it would make a great harbour and bay boat with family or friends who deserve comfort on the water.
VERDICT - Low maintenance pleasure boat At the end of the day, you have the option of sleeping aboard. A sunny Sunday or a weekend harbour sortie, a swim at Store Beach, dinner at Darling Harbour, and a night at Bantry Bay.
Other times, it might be a run to watch the start of the Sydney-Hobart yacht race or New Year’s Eve fireworks… the Salacia 34 will appeal to the discerning boating set and ex-yachties who want a good time.
The boat is well made, well finished, slippery and smart.
"There’s a real need in the market for a beautiful looking and efficient boat, one that really fulfills the purpose and way that people go boating in Australia, and which is also a joy to own all the time," Will enthuses.
"It’s not going to be onerous to maintain. It’s easy to operate. And it looks great," he adds.
On waterways like Sydney Harbour or Pittwater, where day boating is de rigueur and fast-paced living doesn't leave much time for maintenance, he’s got to be onto something. Though it mightn't be so good for his boat-maintenance businesses!
LIKES >> Classic styling and cruising and entertaining comfort >> Efficient hull from respected Naval Architect Andy Dovell >> Single common-rail diesel-engine shaftdrive >> Low maintenance engineering >> Overnight accommodation
NOT SO MUCH >> Not the widest 32 on the water and at rest >> Optional teak trim will require additional care

Charter Guest
"To know Kaz is to love Kaz. Her vibrancy for life, her wanderlust for adventure and her willingness to be free within the uncertainty of the great oceans of the world are at perfect equilibrium with her patient, meticulous, and impregnable approach to any task at hand. I often tell a corny dad joke that "Kaz is the only person I've ever know to dock a 52' boat in a 49' space and come out without a scratch." I saw it happen and when Captain Kaz was forced into a tricky situation by an irresponsible harbourmaster. Most people would have snapped under the pressure of navigating this brand new vessel through such tight quarters but Kaz communicated orders of execution to her bareboat—land loving—ragtag crew of champagne-drenched misfits. In the end, stakes were high and we Kaz ended up on the right side of a stressful situation. Kaz is just a joy to sail with. Her charted course is a mix of fun, interesting, relaxing, and adventure. Her provisioning is spot on. Her "sail whenever possible, motor whenever necessary" policy is refreshing and her decision to revoke your "dingy captain" status is often just. Finally, she'll make you fall in love with sailing. Be it your first time or all over again."
"Kaz is not just a true expert in sailing and sailboat racing but she’s also amazing at teaching both the basics and the nuances of sailing to total beginners. I’ve worked for a couple of years with Kaz as she leads Sonoma State University executive MBAs through the rigors of learning to sail while modeling and practicing good teamwork and communications. Working with the eMBAs requires that Kaz is not just well-versed and knowledgeable about team dynamics (Lencioni/Tuckman models) and multiple leadership assessments (Enneagram, Insights, EQ2.0), but that she is intuitive about helping people learn about sailing while mastering how to work collaboratively and effectively in teams and groups. I’ve noticed that Kaz is especially adept at helping ship-mates communicate effectively and use any conflicts to become even better teammates which I credit to her ability to tie together both sailing philosophy and academic lessons while providing an emotionally and physically safe environment for all on her boat. I highly recommend Kaz as a captain, a sailing teacher, and just an awesome person to be around (which is important when you’re spending so much time together on a boat!)"
"I’ve just returned from my 5th sailing vacation with Captain Kaz. I cannot recommend her highly enough. She is an accomplished sailor who takes the safety of her boat and her crew very seriously. She’s calm, professional, and has taught me a lot about sailing. I’ve enjoyed discovering the Abaco Islands, Belize, the Grenadines, French Polynesia, and St. Maarten with her at the helm. The experiences are always amazing as we explore many places that are not reachable by land. I cherish these trips and I’m always looking forward to the next fun adventure with Captain Kaz."
ASA Student
"Kaz is amazing on all fronts. Extremely experienced, knowledgeable, confident, inspiring, impressive, reassuring, cool under pressure, down-to-earth, flexible, bright, patient, fun... the list of compliments and accolades goes on and on... I could not have hoped for a better ASA instructor. I have learned so much from her and she will undoubtedly be my "go-to" for all future ASA classes, as well as for any advice or tips on sailing I might need for years to come! I emphatically recommend Kaz as an ASA instructor. She will always be my favorite captain and teacher!"
"I have had the pleasure of sailing with Kaz Adams over the past several years. I have a slightly unnatural fear of the sea, but as a captain, Kaz is always focused on safety and her style of teaching and inspiring knowledge has helped me with any nervousness. Kaz’s light hearted spirit, focus, and incredible awareness and understanding of the ocean and sailing are inspiring. I would urge anyone who wants to learn sailing, or just be along for the ride, to travel with Kaz. It will be an experience you won’t forget!"
"I have sailed with Kaz as my bareboat charter captain on numerous occasions, both in perfect and cyclone-force conditions. She takes her job seriously and holds herself and crew to a high level of accountability. At the same time, the sailing trips are always filled with a lot of fun and special memories, thanks in large part to Kaz’s planning and foresight skills. She is always well prepared and does an excellent job preparing and instructing her crews, both experienced and beginner sailors. I highly recommend Kaz for anyone that is looking for an experienced bareboat charter captain that is level-headed, safety oriented, and a lot of fun!."
"As a frequent sailing passenger/crew in the coastal waters around San Diego, Captain Kaz has shown supreme knowledge and superb sailing expertise in all of our excursions together. Not only does she retain a calm, professional demeanor, but also is an excellent source of information for any sailing question. Sailing with Captain Kaz is a delight and I can’t wait for our next trip out on the water together!"
"I am a professor at Daniels College of Business at the University of Denver. Twice a year, we take our Executive MBA students to San Diego for a team building and leadership experience on sailboats. On several occasions, Kaz has been the skipper on the boats I have been on. The first thing that stands out to me is how welcoming and caring she is to the group coming on board. She includes a great combination of humor and professionalism and is very effective on the safety aspects necessary. I have always felt well taken care of by the way she commands the boat. She knows a whole lot about what is required to sail boats successfully, and she is extremely valuable in how she relates to people on the boat and also her peers. Her communication skills are excellent and she has a very positive attitude. We always receive positive feedback from the adult students about their experience on the boat with Kaz."
"My first bareboat trip was with Captain Kaz in the British Virgin Islands over 20 years ago. Her sailing motto is “Every sail needs to be fun, safe, and fun!” and it certainly was. I enjoyed sailing charters so much with Kaz that I pursued a bareboat chartering certification on my own. By completing the bareboat cruising courses, I really came to appreciate Captain Kaz’s sailing skills, attention to detail and planning that goes into a successful sailing trip. Some of the best memories of our trips were of exploring the islands in our own boat with a nearly unlimited freedom of schedule. I was also able to participate in the sailing and operation of the boat, making the vacation enriching and still very relaxing. I would highly recommend sailing with Captain Kaz and look forward to doing it again!"
"I have sailed with Kaz Adams twice over the last three years, and frankly I can’t wait to go, again. As a captain, Kaz has shown herself to be both beyond competent, with safety always coming first, but never in a dictatorial fashion. She is serious, yet easy going. She is focused, yet light-hearted. It’s not easy to find a captain who can be flexible, yet have a definite idea of what needs to be done. The cruises have been both a ton of fun, somewhat educational and very well thought out in their details & itinerary. Every day was a new adventure, in a completely different type of setting. I would tell anyone who has a love for the sea & adventure and can’t get enough of beautiful breezy locations to hire her for a charter. You will have a good time to remember for years to come."
Kaz acquired her sea legs as a teenager by first teaching sailing at an overnight camp in upstate New York. From there she went on to race Thistles and daysailers in various lakes. After that, she got into crewing for charters in the Caribbean, and eventually returned to teaching sailing by becoming an American Sailing instructor (through 214). Off to Central America she went to hone those skills! And that was only the beginning… Kaz obtained her USCG 50-ton license (with a Sailing Endorsement), and her RYA Yachtmaster Offshore (Commercially Endorsed) and from there has continued to do a myriad of events on the water, combining all she loves about sailing: charters, racing, and teaching. Currently, Captain Kaz is located in Southern California and planning on making 2022 an outstanding year for chartering and sailing in general. Come join the fun!
Here is a published interview to check out and here is her CV . Kaz recently hosted seminars at the Sailing Convention for Women in Newport Beach, California. Here are the printed materials on Passage Making from those sessions.
