Exploring Antigua: A Superyacht Charter Haven
By Frances Flannagan
Antigua is undeniably one of the most beautiful Caribbean islands with a plethora of activities on offer. Alongside being a popular tourist hotspot as the ultimate relaxation destination, it is also a superyacht charter haven. From taking in the island’s prettiest sights, to taking part in some of Antigua’s most unique experiences, we offer charter guests some of the very best recommendations for exploring arguably the most charming of the Leeward islands. Immerse yourself in all things Antigua, as we take you through what a day on this spectacular island and exquisite luxury location could look like.
It is early on Sunday morning, and you have just docked in Falmouth Harbour Marina. There was a small concern that there would not be a place that would accommodate a yacht of such size, however all worries soon disappear once you discover that Antigua is one of the main ports in the Caribbean, offering a sheltered bay and two large marinas for superyachts, as well as even more marinas for smaller vessels. Falmouth Harbour has been specifically developed with large berths and a deep draft to accommodate mega yachts, so it is the perfect place to dock. It is at this moment that the relaxation begins; all worries have subsided as you step onto the spectacular island that is Antigua.
With 365 beaches on offer, there is no question that you will struggle to find somewhere to relax after your journey. From Dickenson Bay, Antigua’s busiest beach with numerous water-sports activities, to Pigeon Point, with shallow and calm waters for snorkelling and a quiet atmosphere for sunbathing, there are a range of options to accommodate every desire. You cruise East and drop anchor near Long Bay Beach, a fine stretch of white sand and crystal blue waters; the epitome of bliss. After some relaxation, you begin to explore the wonders that Antigua has to offer. Strolling by kiosks and restaurants, absorbing aspects of the welcoming local community, you make your way to Devil’s Bridge, to catch a stunning glimpse of the island’s natural rock formation. Standing on the rugged rocks, watching the waves crash into the East Coast as they have done for thousands of years and resulting in the formation of the natural arch, you very quickly begin to realise that Antigua really is something special. It is not just the hundreds of blissful beaches that it boasts, but so much more.
After staring out into the ocean from the shore, you decide that a snorkelling trip is due. From the East Coast, you cruise to the North to anchor near Sting-Ray City. Here, you embark on another unique aspect of Antigua: a snorkelling trip in which the main ‘event’ is sting-rays. You take the boat to the shallow sting-ray pool and are instantly greeted by the friendly southern ‘rays. Up close with a creature you have before only seen photographs of, this is an experience that you will never forget.
Adrenaline racing after this fantastic excursion, you decide that you would like to follow it with another activity. You’ve explored the sea, and now feel it is worth heading inland. You cruise back down the island and anchor down South, only a short drive from Fig Tree Drive Rainforest where you can explore the jungle by zipline. A great thrill as well as the opportunity to explore a new aspect of the island, this tour is unlike anything you have done before. Flying high amongst the canopy, immersing yourself in the flora and fauna, you feel as though you really have experienced all of the elements that Antigua has to offer.
After strolling along Nelson’s Dockyard, another possible location for docking your superyacht, you make your way up to Shirley Heights. A picture perfect view overlooking both English and Falmouth Harbours, and the beautiful blue Antiguan waters, offering a glorious place to spend sunset on a Sunday for two reasons: the lookout point, and the party. From late afternoon to night-time every Sunday, an unforgettable night unfolds with local bands, barbecues and drinks until the sun goes down. Alongside the stunning view, and the mixture of locals and tourists drawing the week to a close in the same spectacular way, this is an evening to be remembered for years to come.
As the night draws to a close, the music becomes softer, and the people begin to disperse, your day's experiences begin to unfold in front of you. You are sure you have explored every aspect of this charming island and become immersed in everything it has to offer. From cruising to beautiful beaches and relaxing on the shore, to taking in the thrilling activities and bustling atmospheres, it is clear that Antigua is a uniquel and stunning place to visit: an undeniable superyacht charter haven.
