Boat of the Week: Inside the 7-Year Quest to Build ‘Dream Symphony,’ the World’s Largest Sailboat

Dream symphony may be the most amazing boat we'll never see. years after its owner dropped the project, it sits idle in a turkish shipyard., julia zaltzman, julia zaltzman's most recent stories.

Dream Symphony Besides Maltese Falcon

Size matters: If Dream Symphony is ever completed, it would dwarf the 289-foot Maltese Falcon, currently the world’s fourth-largest sailing yacht.

When Dream Symphony was first announced in 2014, the yachting world was all aflutter. At 462 feet in length, it promised to be not only the largest yacht produced in Turkey, but the largest sailing yacht ever built (except for the sail-assisted motoryacht Sailing Yacht A, which is technically more motorsailer than sailboat).

Even more incredible is that Dream Symphony was to be constructed entirely out of wood. The use of epoxy laminated iroko (African teak) forms an integral part of boatbuilder Dream Ship Victory’s vision to successfully bring laminated wood into modern shipbuilding. The yard has a successful track record. In 2013, it delivered the 212-foot Mikhail S. Vorontsov , built entirely out of laminated mahogany.

At more than double the length, Dream Symphony is a much larger technical challenge. Of course, the biggest challenge since its announcement seven years ago has been finding an owner—or rather a second owner. After the initial brouhaha about the world’s largest sailboat, Dream Symphony went dark.

Dream Symphony will be the largest sailing yacht ever completed, if it is ever built

“The original owner pulled out when the Ukrainian crisis came about,” Dream Symphony ’s designer Ken Freivokh told Robb Report . “The project went on up to a point, a bit slower, but now we’re looking for a new owner.”

Actually, the project has been stalled. Freivokh shared images of a partially built hull inside the shipyard, and he says it has since progressed, but not to the point where it’s anything resembling his majestic renderings. While gigayachts in the motoryacht segment are being ordered and delivered with regularity, the world’s-largest sailing yacht will require a very special owner.

When—or if —the yacht is completed, it will be worth the wait. Dream Symphony reunites the same A-team that conceived the iconic sailing superyachts, the 350-foot Black Pearl and 289-foot Maltese Falcon . The hull design and engineering were completed by Dykstra Naval Architects, while Freivokh was responsible for the interior and exterior.

“Building the largest sailing yacht is what the shipyard owner has always wanted to achieve,” says Freivokh. The shipyard’s preference for wood is based on the material’s renewable and recyclable properties. But the yard’s principals take it a step farther by asserting that wood produces a vessel of “equal or even greater strength” than steel and aluminum.

It has not been smooth sailing, though. When Dream Ship Victory approached RINA to certify construction, the Italian marine agency balked. It had never certified any wooden vessel over 98.4-feet in length. There followed an exacting process managed by Dykstra Naval Architects, involving composite experts Gurit, and exhaustive testing by laboratories at the Delft University of Technology in Holland and Italy’s University of Messina. The results satisfied RINA to certify construction and the build began.

“It’s almost the equivalent of a huge composite build,” said Freivokh. “The epoxy lamination is quite a complex system, but it preserves the wood, which means it should last a long time and behave very predictably.”

The original owner called for elegant use of wood across the interior. “The idea was to express the beauty of wood, so the owner was keen to have a fairly classic interior, and even the exterior is a modern interpretation of a classic,” says Freivokh. “At one point, we considered a contemporary style like Black Pearl , but the owner resisted that in favor of something more traditional, so it stands as a four-masted schooner.”

The four masts tower 229.7 feet above the water, carrying furling staysails on Hoyt booms with a total sail area 54,680 square feet. If built, the boat will also have a diesel-electric propulsion system for a maximum range under power of 5,900 nautical miles. A two-deck atrium with a spiral staircase is twinned with an owner’s duplex apartment spread across two decks. The “convertible conservatory” links the owner’s living quarters with the main lobby via an glass winter garden that opens to the elements. More glass features in the double-height glass swimming pool on the aft deck, with a bottom that rises to serve as a dance floor or helipad. Like motoryachts its size, Dream Symphony was designed with a spa, treatment rooms and gym.

Freivokh is now working on two other wooden superyachts currently in build at Dream Ship Victory, and is finalizing a 243-foot yacht for Turquoise, another Turkish yard. “Owners who want to build in wood still remain in the minority, but it’s highly personal and some just love the passion of associated with beautiful old classics,” says the designer.

Perhaps. But the new owner has to be willing to take on a much larger technical challenge to claim the title of world’s largest sailboat.

Dream Symphony: Inside the 10-year build of the world's biggest sailing yacht

Related articles, superyacht directory.

Announced in 2010, the 141 metre sailing superyacht Dream Symphony was revealed with a number of groundbreaking promises. The four-masted schooner-rigged sailing yacht, currently in build at Dream Ship Victory’s yard in Bozburun, Turkey, would become the largest sailing yacht in the world when launched.

Constructed entirely from wood, epoxy laminated iroko to be precise, it would also break numerous engineering feats. RINA was approached to certify construction, but there was a problem - it had never certified any wooden structure measuring over 30m in length.

This resulted in a scientific research project spearheaded by designer Dykstra Naval Architects , which involved composite experts and extensive tests undertaken by Italian universities and Dutch laboratories. By the end of the process, RINA was satisfied and construction on the truly unique project began, with the keel laid in 2011.

Since then, progress on the project has stalled and now Burgess is seeking a new owner to bring the yacht to completion. Luckily, the project isn’t shy of unique selling points. For starters, it's designed by Dykstra and Ken Freivokh – who also worked on the 106m Black Pearl and 88m Maltese Falcon But unlike Black Pearl and Maltese Falcon , both of which are constructed from steel and aluminium, Dream Symphony features a unique all-wood construction providing a "warmer environment”, as well as being renewable and recyclable, according to Burgess.

While the original concept, according to Freivokh, called for “a very traditional schooner in terms of the rig”, the layout of the interior was less conventional. In fact the interior concept was almost completely created around a “very private owner’s quarters”.

Split across two levels with an atrium and spiral staircase, this dedicated apartment includes a bedroom, bathroom, and private lounge on the lower deck while an adjoining saloon and office sit on the main deck above. “The owner almost has the whole rear section to themselves”, Freivokh says. The rest of the accommodation sits on the lower deck and sleeps 16 guests in eight cabins, including two VIPs, three doubles, one twin and two convertible rooms.

Elsewhere, the yacht features a convertible conservatory located between the owner’s living quarters and the main lobby, which can be closed at the “touch of a button”, according to Freivokh. Areas like this were key to the owner’s brief of having “the feeling of being outside while being inside”. Elsewhere, the yacht features a double-height swimming pool on the aft deck, complete with a rising bottom that transforms into a dancefloor or helipad.

The extensive list of amenities also includes meeting rooms and a large spa, with hair and nail salons, a massage room and a gym. Burgess sums it up neatly. “The sheer scale of Project Dream Symphony is jaw-dropping.”

While construction has been stalled for some time, Freivokh reports that the hull is now “pretty much complete”. It hasn’t been completely mothballed either, with the yard using a “skeleton crew” to keep work ticking over. “They are keeping it in very good condition”, he adds. For now though, the search for a new owner to finally complete this record-breaking project continues. “When she does launch,” Burgess adds, “she will redefine superyacht sailing for the modern age in a way that honours the past and acknowledges the future.”

The Best Leopard Vloggers on YouTube Right Now

symphony catamaran

The popularity of sailing vlogs in recent years has skyrocketed. Nowadays, it's hard to think of a world in which you can't log onto youtube for advice on doing nearly anything, so of course, that includes purchasing and owning a boat. People find vloggers both inspiring and relatable. It begs the question to everyone dreaming of doing it, "If they can do it, why not me?". We appreciate the willingness of people to share their best moments and their more difficult ones because that is how we, as consumers learn.

Check out some of our favorite vlogs, brought to you by Leopard Catamaran owners, to find your sailing inspiration. Trust me when I tell you many owners create valuable and exciting content. If you are in the market for a catamaran, I suggest you start watching!

Meet Jim, Stephanie and their three labmariners: Anubis, Mocha, and Nuala. A few years ago, they did what any other couple with 245 pounds of dog would do: they bought a sailboat. The couple enjoys traveling and experiencing the world with their three (BIG) labs in tow. The couple loves sharing their best advice on what to do and not to do when buying a boat. And more than that, they share all of their exciting exploration excursions along the way. Their honesty and genuine passion for cruising is well-received by followers. Many of their videos are created to provide in-depth knowledge to anyone interested in this lifestyle. And the loveable dogs add cute cameos and a sense of lightheartedness.

Sailing Wind Therapy

Meet Jeff and Adrienne. In 2013 they took a week-long sailing course and never looked back. After purchasing a Leopard into a charter fleet, they soon realized they were ready to call Wind Therapy their home. In the spring of 2021, they cast the lines from their marina in St. Petersburg, FL, and began making their epic voyage around the world. Jeff and Adrienne offer valuable insights based on their experience, including how they converted their charter boat into a liveaboard boat. They also share their exciting and sometimes silly excursions in and around the Caribbean. No matter where they find themselves, this couple always finds amusement and entertainment.

Sailing Sisu

Meet Frik and Petro. They are South Africans sailing around the world on their Leopard Catamaran and sharing their adventures along the way. Follow along as the story unfolds! This never-ending sabbatical is captained by a couple of nomads who have built their lives on doing what inspires them. Watch them break free of a traditional lifestyle while creating videos of adventures, life on board, and lessons learned. ( taken from their YouTube "about" ).

For this series, you will want to start from the beginning. Starting from scratch, the couple has now conquered ocean crossings and visited countless destinations around Africa, South America and the Caribbean, just to name a few. You will also enjoy their channel's series of "how-to" videos.

Barefoot Doctors Sailing

Meet the Barefoot Doctors. Drs John and Eli McIntosh are successful Authors, Innovators, Entrepreneurs, International Speakers, Humanitarians and Global Sailors. As sailors and passionate humanitarians, they travel the world and use their expertise to benefit people in need.

Initially on a Leopard 50 and now on a Leopard 45, this outgoing couple reveals secrets to living life to the fullest and achieving their wildest dream while using their skills to care for people along the way. Their knowledge of sailing, and boats in general, make their reviews and feedback valuable to new buyers. Follow their channel to experience every heartfelt emotion possible. As with most viewers, you will quickly fall in love with the Barefoot Doctors.

Sailing Symphony

Erin, Todd, and William are starting on their sailing journey into the Caribbean aboard their Leopard 45 catamaran,  Symphony . Just around a year from their first sailing lesson and six months after taking delivery of Symphony, Todd and Erin Rogers are wrapping up their first cruising season in the Bahamas. They have over a thousand miles of adventure and experience behind them, with more to see and learn.

They share their explorations and adventures as they become better sailors and visit different countries and cultures along the way.

Sailing OliLuki

Their philosophy is that it is too easy to become trapped in the daily rut of life. You work so hard so that "one day" you can reach the holy grail of retirement, and only then can life be genuinely enjoyed.

They have decided to believe in dreams, set goals, and make them happen so that enjoying every precious moment of life can start now. Andy, Maki and their identical twin boys, Oliver and Lukas, decided there was no better time than now to make a change. They sell sold the majority of the company they started 13 years ago and set sail to share with their children what this incredible world offers.

Join in the adventures of SV OliLuki as they make a positive difference in the lives of others together. ( Taken from their YouTube "about" )

With a total length of 462 ft (141 m) and with a structure made entirely of wood, Dream Symphony will be the largest sailing yacht in the world. The imposing ship is currently under construction.

symphony catamaran

Announced more than ten years ago by Turkey-based shipyard Dream Ship Victory , the imposing ship is still in the making, but when it will finally be done, it promises to push back the technical boundaries of yacht classification, as boasted by its current owner, Burgees. It will be 30 percent longer than the Black Pearl, which is currently considered the world’s largest sailing superyacht, measuring 347 ft (106 m) in length.

symphony catamaran

The design of the Dream Symphony was entrusted to Ken Freivokh from the U.K., while the naval architecture is the job of Dykstra Naval Architects, a company based in the Netherlands.

symphony catamaran

In addition to the yacht being truly special for its mind-blowing dimensions, it is also unique in that it is going to be an all-wood (epoxy laminated Iroko) construction. The wood gives the Dream Symphony a warm interior vibe, while still making it just as strong as steel and aluminum vessels.

In terms of design, the owner asked for privacy, practicality, classical elegance with a modern twist, as reported by Burgees. The Dream Symphony will feature a diesel-electric propulsion system offering a maximum range of 5,900 Nm at 14 knots.

symphony catamaran

With a two-deck atrium and a spiral staircase, the vessel will have the owner’s duplex apartment on the lower deck, with a bedroom, private bathroom, and lounge. On the main deck, you’ll find a salon and office. There’s also a circular, all-glass swimming pool with a rising floor that can be deployed as a helipad.

A convertible conservatory located between the main lobby and the owner’s living quarters can be closed at a touch of a button and creates an all-weather winter garden.

Other notable features are a spa with nail and hair salons, a gym, a massage room, and meeting rooms.

symphony catamaran

The building process of the yacht has been stalled for a significant amount of time and it is currently on hold. But the hull of the ship is almost complete and Burgees is now striving to speed things up by looking for a new owner for the Dream Symphony. There’s no price mentioned, so you have to contact  Burgees  for more info on that.

First Look Inside Feadship Charter Yacht SYMPHONY

By Oliver Pearson   25 July 2016

The largest yacht ever delivered from the world-leading Feadship , the 102m/333ft motor yacht SYMPHONY recently enjoyed an extensive photoshoot to showcase her stunning interior.

Picking up the award for ‘Best Displacement Motor Yacht Over 2999GT’ at this year’s World Superyacht Awards, SYMPHONY requires little introduction.

Indeed, thanks to a harmonious and striking exterior designed by Tim Heywood, she’s easily one of the most distinctive motor yachts currently available for charter.

An exceptional entertainer, her list of amenities includes an outdoor cinema on the bridge deck, an expansive beach club, and an impressive 6-metre contraflow swimming pool on the aft deck.

Whilst her amenities and profile have been the source of much recent discussion, it isn’t until now that it’s been possible to take a more detailed look at her interior spaces.

Taking a virtual tour through her various areas, this article will look closely at the remarkable styling which reflects the refinement of the yacht’s exterior.

The main salon of luxury yacht SYMPHONY

Blessed with a truly unique character, superyacht SYMPHONY offers a similarly exceptional kind of charter experience

Evoking a relaxed beach club vibe with an abundance of individual flourishes, the interior of luxury yacht SYMPHONY is simply incomparable.

The combination of bright furnishings, golden fixtures, and African art pieces in the main salon, for example, isn’t to be found elsewhere.

Whilst taking its aesthetic cues from more historic sources, there are plenty of modern touches to keep things interesting, with a sleek grand piano and contemporary tables making the communal areas that bit more engaging.

All complemented by a generous amount of light, the various spaces inside SYMPHONY are flanked by nicely extended windows and fitted with recessed overhead lights.

Something of a masterclass in woods, both the flooring and paneling ranges through a number of tones and grains to keep things inviting and stylish.

The staircase and video wall inside luxury yacht SYMPHONY

Further evidence of the yacht’s modern sensibilities can be found when navigating between the decks, with a giant interactive video screen in the elevator providing plenty of entertainment as well as adding to the overall style.

The spacious arrangement of the staterooms also lends the yacht an appropriate elegance for charterers to unfurl in following a day out on the water.

All carried out by Zuretti Design, the interior of superyacht SYMPHONY is ultimately one which marries function with flair- whilst guests have convenient access to all of their desired features, they won’t be sacrificing on an attractive environment to enjoy them in.

CAT56 Catamaran: A symphony of elegance and innovation on the seas

celebreMagazine

In the realm where the sea meets the sky, a testament to design brilliance and innovation has emerged from the esteemed collaboration between two titans of the maritime world— Pininfarina Nautical and De Simoni Yacht Design . This collaboration has birthed the CAT56 catamaran, a jewel of maritime artistry and Austin Parker shipyard’s inaugural venture post-acquisition by the visionary Baris Nalcaci. With its regal dimensions, spanning 17 meters in length and 7 meters in width, the CAT56 is a marriage of spacious comfort typical of a catamaran, infused with the grace and athleticism of higher-category yachts. This blend of elements has given rise to a sprawling and luxurious layout, encapsulated within a streamlined profile that ensures graceful berthing in marinas, making navigation a seamless pleasure.

symphony catamaran

From a stylistic standpoint, the CAT56 embodies a spirited elegance reminiscent of superyacht design—a true testament to the DNA of both Pininfarina and De Simoni Yacht Design. The defining feature, a striking long hull window, graces the CAT56, creating an iconic design that elegantly bridges the boat’s interior and the vast expanse of the open sea. The exterior of the vessel boasts a thoughtfully designed cockpit, offering direct communion with the sea, its furniture carefully chosen for both functionality and style. An alluring flybridge beckons on the hull, offering a spacious sunbathing area, a well-equipped wet bar, and the helm station. The layered design accentuates the superstructure, allowing the azure light of the sky to filter into the living room, evoking the ambience of opulent superyachts.

symphony catamaran

Yet, beyond its visual splendour, the CAT56 embodies the vision and dedication of its creators, exemplified by the words of Daniele Mazzon, Head of Transportation Design at Pininfarina: “CAT56 is the result of the collaboration between Pininfarina Nautical and De Simoni Yacht Design and standouts for its sporty and elegant design. While creating CAT56, we focused on the spaces and the onboard experience, designing a boat that seamlessly connects interior and exterior spaces and allows for comfortable navigation.”

symphony catamaran

This visionary endeavour was set in motion with the acquisition of Austin Parker, a pivotal turning point that marked the advent of a new era for the shipyard. The acquisition not only injected fresh financial resources but, under the astute guidance of Baris Nalcaci, ushered in a solid foundation of industrial experience that would pave the way for the production of the new catamaran and further elevate existing offerings with state-of-the-art technologies. Fulvio De Simoni, CEO of De Simoni Yacht Design, aptly expressed, “We have taken into great consideration, at every stage of the project, the industrialization and production systems with the aim of constantly improving the quality of the product.”

symphony catamaran

Stepping into the heart of the CAT56 reveals a world of luxury and opulence, with spacious, well-lit areas gracing its interior. The salon, an epitome of refined living, houses an open-plan kitchen and a living area that gracefully extends into the expansive cockpit, blurring the boundaries between indoor and outdoor spaces. The finishes, crafted to perfection, showcase superior quality compared to boats in the same segment, defined by refined materials that envelope the onboard atmosphere in a cocoon of comfort. Moreover, the CAT56 unfolds a full-beam owner’s cabin in the forward expanse, embracing an open-space design adorned with a walk-in closet area and a desk, a haven of tranquillity amidst the tumultuous seas. Two guest cabins, each boasting dedicated bathrooms, and a crew cabin, further enhance the vessel’s offerings. The CAT56, set to commence production in September, marks the initiation of an exciting journey—a pioneering model in a forthcoming range of boats envisioned by Pininfarina Nautical and De Simoni Yacht Design for Austin Parker.

symphony catamaran

As the tides of innovation surge, the CAT56 stands as a beacon, promising to redefine luxury and elegance in the world of maritime excellence, inviting all to set sail into a realm where grace, comfort, and adventure converge.

Savvino-storozhevsky monastery and museum.

Savvino-Storozhevsky Monastery and Museum

Zvenigorod's most famous sight is the Savvino-Storozhevsky Monastery, which was founded in 1398 by the monk Savva from the Troitse-Sergieva Lavra, at the invitation and with the support of Prince Yury Dmitrievich of Zvenigorod. Savva was later canonised as St Sabbas (Savva) of Storozhev. The monastery late flourished under the reign of Tsar Alexis, who chose the monastery as his family church and often went on pilgrimage there and made lots of donations to it. Most of the monastery’s buildings date from this time. The monastery is heavily fortified with thick walls and six towers, the most impressive of which is the Krasny Tower which also serves as the eastern entrance. The monastery was closed in 1918 and only reopened in 1995. In 1998 Patriarch Alexius II took part in a service to return the relics of St Sabbas to the monastery. Today the monastery has the status of a stauropegic monastery, which is second in status to a lavra. In addition to being a working monastery, it also holds the Zvenigorod Historical, Architectural and Art Museum.

Belfry and Neighbouring Churches

symphony catamaran

Located near the main entrance is the monastery's belfry which is perhaps the calling card of the monastery due to its uniqueness. It was built in the 1650s and the St Sergius of Radonezh’s Church was opened on the middle tier in the mid-17th century, although it was originally dedicated to the Trinity. The belfry's 35-tonne Great Bladgovestny Bell fell in 1941 and was only restored and returned in 2003. Attached to the belfry is a large refectory and the Transfiguration Church, both of which were built on the orders of Tsar Alexis in the 1650s.

symphony catamaran

To the left of the belfry is another, smaller, refectory which is attached to the Trinity Gate-Church, which was also constructed in the 1650s on the orders of Tsar Alexis who made it his own family church. The church is elaborately decorated with colourful trims and underneath the archway is a beautiful 19th century fresco.

Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral

symphony catamaran

The Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral is the oldest building in the monastery and among the oldest buildings in the Moscow Region. It was built between 1404 and 1405 during the lifetime of St Sabbas and using the funds of Prince Yury of Zvenigorod. The white-stone cathedral is a standard four-pillar design with a single golden dome. After the death of St Sabbas he was interred in the cathedral and a new altar dedicated to him was added.

symphony catamaran

Under the reign of Tsar Alexis the cathedral was decorated with frescoes by Stepan Ryazanets, some of which remain today. Tsar Alexis also presented the cathedral with a five-tier iconostasis, the top row of icons have been preserved.

Tsaritsa's Chambers

symphony catamaran

The Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral is located between the Tsaritsa's Chambers of the left and the Palace of Tsar Alexis on the right. The Tsaritsa's Chambers were built in the mid-17th century for the wife of Tsar Alexey - Tsaritsa Maria Ilinichna Miloskavskaya. The design of the building is influenced by the ancient Russian architectural style. Is prettier than the Tsar's chambers opposite, being red in colour with elaborately decorated window frames and entrance.

symphony catamaran

At present the Tsaritsa's Chambers houses the Zvenigorod Historical, Architectural and Art Museum. Among its displays is an accurate recreation of the interior of a noble lady's chambers including furniture, decorations and a decorated tiled oven, and an exhibition on the history of Zvenigorod and the monastery.

Palace of Tsar Alexis

symphony catamaran

The Palace of Tsar Alexis was built in the 1650s and is now one of the best surviving examples of non-religious architecture of that era. It was built especially for Tsar Alexis who often visited the monastery on religious pilgrimages. Its most striking feature is its pretty row of nine chimney spouts which resemble towers.
