Yachts with Helipad

Charter yachts are known for offer the best in first-class travel. Wake up each morning in your own private stateroom, and take in the sunrise over the Mediterranean, Caribbean or Adriatic, while a member of the crew brings you a freshly brewed cup of coffee.

Doesn’t get better than that, right? Not to mention, superyachts are laden with amenities, from water toys, to immaculate interiors, and sun-soaked decks, perfect for relaxing. Yet, there’s one feature that’s available on only a select group of charter yachts: Helicopter pads .

A yacht with a helicopter deck opens up a world of travel possibilities. Arrive on your yacht at sea, take a stunning helicopter tour of a nearby wildlife refuge or glacier, or skip the tender on your way to the airport – those are all possibilities aboard a yacht with a helipad.

Super Yachts with Helicopter Pads

Technically, superyachts are fully crewed boats that measure 24 meters or longer (that’s just about 75 feet). That definition doesn’t reflect the times. Superyachts have gotten larger and more opulent than ever, with designers pushing the bounds of what’s possible.

Naturally, yachts with helicopter decks tend to be larger – north of 200 feet. These larger-than-life yachts are some of the most exclusive charter superyachts with helipad access:

Yacht Solandge

The beautiful Solandge is one of the most unique yachts on the market today. Her interior, for example, the work of Rodriguez Interiors and Dolker & Voges, features countless design surprises. The main salon is a stunner. It’s decked out with amethyst walls, gold leaf ceilings, a Bechstein piano and Schonbeck chandeliers with hanging amethyst rose quartz crystals. Yet, the centerpiece is an art glass sculpture, “The Tree of Life,” that stretches 50 feet high and is bedazzled by 1,000+ points of light.

Outside, Solandge shows her sheer size. She boasts a sexy beach club, a gold and white bar, a spa pool and a dance floor, among other opulent luxuries. Of course, you’ll find the helipad outdoors, too, as well as a sprawling sun deck and lounge. The yacht is maintained by a crew of 29 and can accommodate 12 guests in eight large cabins.

Yacht Legend

Originally built by Icon in 1974, Legend underwent its most recent refit in 2016. The ship isn’t a traditional motor yacht. Rather, she’s a fully certified Class 1 ice-breaking ship, and more recently has been turned into a luxury explorer yacht.

Legend is definitely one-of-a-kind. Inside and out, she offers the best in luxury yachting. The ship accommodates up to 26 guests – in total luxury – in her 13 staterooms. There’s a master suite, two VIP suites, as well as 10 different staterooms.

The yacht is built for exploration. In addition to her commercial helipad, Legend features her very own submarine. Plus, adding to the undeniable allure is a gym, Balinese spa and sauna, a Jacuzzi, a movie theater, and a swimming pool. Legend is maintenance by a crew of 19, as well as a 10-member expedition crew, including doctors, ice pilots, expedition leaders and naturalists.

Yacht Naia

NAIA was built by Freire Shipyard in 2011, and she offers an abundance of space for relaxing and entertaining. Spread across four decks, the yacht has six guest suites and a master suite, the latter of which takes up the entire “penthouse” level and includes a private deck. A central spiral staircase connects all of the decks, and the master suite is accessible through an elevator that goes as low as the sundeck.

As for the common areas, NAIA has plenty of areas for guests to choose from, including a cinema room. The main saloon is both inviting and intimate, with ultra-comfortable plush couches and a chic contemporary décor. A dining table can seat up to eight people, and is surrounded by a smaller sitting area, a small bar and plenty of artwork. Outside, charter guests onboard will find casual seating and bar areas, al fresco dining, another bar, a Jacuzzi, and plenty of places to sunbathe.

Yacht Cloudbreak

Built by Abeking & Rasmussen in 2016, Cloudbreak is a truly world-class expedition yacht. The exterior design of Cloudbreak is the work of Espen Oeino, and the Scandinavian-inspired interior design was completed by Paris-based Christian Liaigre. After undergoing four years of development, this custom-built mega yacht is finally on the market, and it offers a world of adventure.

In addition to her helipad, the yacht has a fully stocked garage of water toys, including scuba equipment, jet skis, and numerous kayaks, paddle boards and kite surfing rigs. Inside, though, the yacht is a show stopper. With accommodations for up to 12 guests, as well as amenities like a spa with sauna, swimming pool and beach club, Cloudbreak is designed for relaxing excursions.

Enigma XK

Enigma XK was first built by Richards Shipbuilders in 1987, and last refit in 2013. Previously named Norna, this yacht is the work of Vitruvius and Philippe Briand, who completed its interior and exterior design, respectively.

The sleek interior is marked by cream and white tones, light woods, lit flooring, and a glamorous aesthetic. There is a full-scale wellness and fitness center onsite, and this boat was named “Best Yacht Conversion” winner of The World Superyachts Award in 2014. Perfect for adventuring through ice-filled waters, Enigma XK offers plenty of toys for exploring, including a 9-meter Limo tender, an R.I.B. tender, a rescue tender, two Zodiac tenders, multiple wave runners, SCUBA diving and snorkeling equipment, a dive compressor, water skis, a wake board, tow toys, inflatable pontoons and more.

Yacht Suri

SuRi was built by Halter Marine/Yacht Escort Ships International in 1978, and later refit in 2016. An ideal yacht for travel with family and friends, SuRi is the brainchild of its owner. Its décor is both comfortable and contemporary, with expansive cabins and elegant living areas. Plus, the yacht boasts a fitness center, a massage room, and even a “Windows to the Sea” section of the yacht, where travelers can get a glimpse of all of the colorful fish swimming around them.

Outside, guests can dine al fresco on the sun deck, relax in the Jacuzzi, sunbathe, or enjoy a sunset cocktail in front of a backdrop of amazing views. If you’re a more adventurous charter guest, the water toys onboard SuRi won’t disappoint. In addition to the helipad, there are bikes, snorkel equipment, surfboards, kayaks, fishing gear, diving equipment and even a 35-foot Stan-Craft mahogany speedster. On SuRi, the choices are endless.

Yacht O'Ptasia with Helipad

Built in 2018 by Golden Yachts, O’Ptasia is a stunning superyacht that features a wide array of world-class amenities. The yacht features a high-end contemporary aesthetic inside, including sleek and spacious salons and expertly appointed guest staterooms. She accommodates up to 12 in 11 rooms, including a master suite, VIP stateroom, as well as a variety of double and twin cabins.

Her exterior is a masterpiece of nautical engineering. Featuring expansive decks, including a sizable beach club and breezy sun deck, the yacht is a floating five-star hotel. You’ll find all of the amenities onboard: A spa, an outdoor bar, sun deck Jacuzzi and much more.

Yacht Planet Nine with Helipad

The ice-classed explorer yacht Planet Nine was built in 2018 by Italian shipyard Admiral Yachts. Built for explorations in the far corners of the world, no expense was spared on her construction. Inside, the yacht is the epitome of opulence.

Designed by London-based Milnaric, Henry and Zervudachi (MHZ), the superyacht has a full range of luxury amenities: Modern staterooms, including a master suite that takes an entire deck, a panoramic observation deck, and an immaculate dining area.

Yet, the ship is certainly designed for exploration. Outside, the yacht’s most recognizable feature is the helipad, which features a garage just below. Additionally, you’ll find everything on board for a high-seas adventure, including two 32-foot tenders, 120-inch cinema, steam room, sauna and a spacious beach club.

Charter Yachts with Helicopters

Looking for something a bit more compact? It’s true that a 200+ foot yacht isn’t for everyone. Fortunately, if you’d like to charter a helicopter-equipped yacht, there are plenty of options in the 130- to 200-foot range. Here are a few of our favorites:

Yacht Skyfall with Helipad

With sleek exterior styling and a timeless interior, Skyfall offers the best in Caribbean yachting. The yacht was built in 2010, but underwent a complete refit in 2015. Today, she’s gorgeous inside and out.

Her interior features an “urban contemporary” aesthetic, with notes of Buddhist Zen, and you’ll notice when you step on board. Featuring an array of unique materials, including petrified tree trunks as well as a Tiger’s Eye bar in the sky lounge, the yacht is designed for entertaining (with space for up to 12 guests).

Outside, Skyfall offers plenty of deck space. Her sun deck features a splash pool, and there’s space for alfresco dining on the aft deck, a beautiful skylounge, and a panoramic balcony.

Yacht Tommy

Tommy is a luxury motor yacht built by Benetti in 1995. It underwent its last refit in 2014 and boasts an interior and exterior design by Terence Disdale and Stefano Natucci, respectively. This yacht is large enough to host a cocktail party for up to 100 guests.

The interior of Tommy is both elegant and classic, with cream and burnt orange tones, and light wood cabinets and paneling throughout. The main salon is large and comfortable and comes with plush sofas and impeccable décor. There is a formal dining area, as well as a club-style sky lounge with a games table and a flat screen TV.

Outside, guests will find spots for alfresco dining, a sun deck, multiple bar areas, a central spa pool, multiple sunbeds, and of course, the helipad. From the swim platform, guests have access to countless water toys, including: a 5.8-meter Novurania Tender, a 5.8-meter Novurania Tender, two two-person Kawasaki Wave runners, water skis, a wakeboard, tows and plenty of snorkeling gear. An on-board helipad traditionally means a spacious yacht. Yet, there are a number of boats that accommodation copters, but have a smaller footprint. If you’re headed out with a small group, but want the luxury of a helipad, these yachts are perfect:

Flying Fish Yacht with Helipad

They say big things come in small packages, and that’s certainly true of Flying Fish. This yacht – built in 1991 and refit in 2010 – offers the perfect platform for small-ground adventures. Superyachts with helipads offer several advantages that elevate the yachting experience:

Convenience and Time-Saving:

  • Effortless Arrival and Departure: Bypass crowded marinas and lengthy tender rides. Arrive directly onboard your yacht by helicopter, maximizing your time at sea for relaxation and exploration.
  • Remote Destinations Accessible: Reach secluded bays, untouched islands, or hidden harbors inaccessible by traditional means. Explore the world in a whole new way.
  • Spontaneous Adventures: Helicopter access opens doors to a world of possibilities for customized itineraries and last-minute excursions. Discover a secluded beach for a private picnic or land directly at a nearby town for a cultural experience.

Enhanced Exploration:

  • Island Hopping Made Easy: Imagine hopping between idyllic islands in the Caribbean or French Riviera with ease. Explore a wider range of destinations during your yachting adventure.
  • Global Reach: With a helipad, remote locations become accessible. Explore the breathtaking landscapes of Alaska or the pristine islands of the South Pacific in unparalleled style.

Luxury Experience:

  • VIP Arrival: Make a grand entrance by arriving directly on your yacht, creating a memorable experience for you and your guests.
  • Ultimate Freedom: The world is your oyster. Explore hidden coves, discover secluded beaches, and experience unparalleled freedom on the water.
  • Symbol of Prestige: Owning a superyacht with a helipad signifies luxury and sophistication. It's a statement piece that reflects your success and adventurous spirit.

Additional Considerations:

  • Helicopter Operations: Owning a helipad also involves considerations like helicopter storage, pilot availability, and adhering to aviation regulations, which can add extra costs and logistical planning.
  • Yacht Size: Helipads are typically found on larger superyachts due to space constraints. The size and weight capacity of the helipad will determine the type of helicopter that can land.

Overall, superyachts with helipads offer a unique blend of convenience, exploration possibilities, and a touch of luxury. It's ideal for those who value their time, crave adventure, and desire an unparalleled yachting experience.

As a rule of thumb, yachts need to be at least 40-metres (approximately 131 feet) in length to accommodate a helipad on the bow (front) section. Here's a breakdown of the factors affecting yacht size and helipad suitability:

Space Requirements:

  • Helipad Size: The minimum safe landing area for a helicopter depends on the specific model and its rotor diameter. However, a helipad typically needs to be 1.25 times the length of the tail rotor for safe operation.
  • Clearance Zones: Safety regulations require clear zones around the helipad free from obstacles like masts, antennas, or deck furniture. This further increases the space needed.

Yacht Design and Functionality:

  • Bow Helipad: Smaller yachts (40-45 meters) might be able to dedicate the bow area for a helipad, although it can limit usable deck space.
  • Stern Helipads (Less Common): While less ideal due to potential wake interference during landing, some larger yachts might have helipads on the aft (back) section. This typically requires clever design to minimize impact on guest areas.
  • Superyacht Size: Larger superyachts (above 60 meters) have more deck space and can dedicate a more substantial area for a helipad, often on the bow, while still offering ample space for guest amenities.
  • Weight Capacity: The yacht's overall weight capacity needs to factor in the helipad's weight and the maximum weight of the helicopters it can accommodate.
  • Certification: For commercial use, the helipad needs to comply with specific regulatory requirements and certifications set by maritime and aviation authorities.

In Conclusion:

While 40 meters is a general starting point, the suitability of a helipad depends on the specific yacht design, desired helicopter size, and weight limitations. Larger superyachts offer more flexibility and optimal functionality for helipad use.

The key difference between a touch and go helipad and a certified helipad lies in their purpose, regulations, and level of safety involved. Here's a breakdown:

Touch and Go Helipad:

  • Purpose: Primarily used for non-commercial operations, such as private yacht use.
  • Regulations: No specific regulations or certifications govern their design, construction, or operation.
  • Safety: Generally considered less safe due to the lack of regulatory oversight.
  • Landing Procedure: Helicopters typically land, briefly touch down to disembark or embark passengers or cargo, and take off immediately.
  • Location: Often found on smaller yachts (around 40 meters or more) where space constraints might limit options for a full-fledged helipad.

Certified Helipad:

  • Purpose: Designed for commercial helicopter operations, including yacht charters, emergency medical services, or private use with a dedicated pilot and support crew.
  • Regulations: Must comply with stringent regulations set by maritime and aviation authorities (e.g., International Maritime Organization (IMO), Federal Aviation Administration (FAA)). These regulations cover aspects like helipad size, weight capacity, safety equipment, pilot qualifications, and maintenance procedures.
  • Safety: Offers a higher level of safety due to mandatory adherence to regulations and inspections.
  • Landing Procedure: Helicopters can land, refuel, potentially undergo minor maintenance, and take off again.
  • Location: Typically found on larger yachts (above 60 meters) with dedicated space for a helipad that meets regulatory requirements.

In essence, a touch and go helipad offers a basic landing spot, while a certified helipad provides a safe and regulated platform for various helicopter operations. The choice between the two depends on your specific needs and intended use.

A helipad is the ultimate luxury convenience for anyone in a hurry to start their dream yacht charter vacation, yet although it seems these days every self-respecting superyacht boasts a helipad - or two - few are actually commercially certified for helicopter landings. So, the question remains: is a non-certified helipad just a waste of space on a yacht charter?

To clear things up, we have compiled our guide on everything you need to know about superyacht helipads, as well as some of the best charter yachts already equipped with fully-certified helicopter platforms for those wishing to kick off their luxury yacht charter in style.

Helicopter lands onboard MY Suri

In this article:

A commercially-certified helipad is a must

Can you use a non-certified helipad on a yacht charter, private helipads, ‘touch and go’ helipad, charter guest benefits, 6 stand-out superyachts with a fully-certified helipad, 1. la datcha, 2. cloudbreak, 3. madsummer, 5. flying fox, interested in booking a luxury yacht charter.

For this classification, a superyacht helipad must be constructed and operated in line with the Maritime and Coastguard Agency’s (MCA) Large Commercial Yacht Code (LY3) Annex 6, which is basically the technical standards for helicopter landing areas, or helipads.

Helipad onboard MY Ragnar

This code sets out the basic rules governing the design, construction and operation of a helipad, which includes important factors such as a yacht’s load bearing capacity, obstacle clearance, consideration of airflow, safe access points, lighting, permanent deck markings and relevant crew training on helicopter operations.

yacht with helipad cost

The responsibility for the survey and certification process for a helipad intended for commercial use is shared between the yacht’s registered flag state, the classification society and an aviation inspection body, such as the International Civil Aviation Organization ( ICAO ).

All in all, it doesn’t leave much wiggle room for winging it.

In a nutshell, no.

Helicopters are not permitted to touch down on a non-certified helipad onboard a yacht that is being used commercially, i.e. for charter, unless for a medical emergency such as the evacuation of sick or injured passengers.

yacht with helipad cost

A helipad or helideck is considered a commercial operation if used to either;

  • Receive commercial charter helicopters, or
  • Transport charter guests

Therefore, even a yacht being used privately by its owner cannot receive a commercial charter helicopter if the helideck is not certified.

The ICAO have also weighed in on this point, stipulating that “all commercial air transport helicopters should land on certified helipads which must be built according to certain standards”.

Private helipads onboard a yacht adhere to less stringent rules and therefore do not have to meet the commercial standards for certification.

We find many owners are keen to incorporate a helideck, so long as it doesn't compromise the overall aesthetic of the yacht

Aft helipad with sun loungers onboard MY Luna B

That's not to say that non-certified helipads aren’t safe, as for the most part they will have been designed with the regulations in mind. However, more often a yacht’s visual appeal is advocated over the practicalities of helipad design. Chris Wood, a helidecks operations manager with Safeguard Helidecks Certification agrees: “We find many owner's are keen to incorporate a helideck, so long as it doesn't compromise the overall aethestic of the yacht."

This snazzy term has become synonymous with luxury superyachts, although it technically has no meaning. For clarity's sake, unless specified ‘touch and go’ helipads are not certified and therefore cannot be used for commercial operations i.e. yacht charters, with the exception of medical emergencies.

MY O'Ptasia

This can cause some confusion, especially as these types of helipads are often highlighted as a stand-out feature when marketing a yacht for charter.

A certified helipad onboard a yacht is a major bonus for yacht charterers wishing to expedite their travel time and arrive in style. Other advantages include;

  • Quick and easy access to and from the yacht
  • Avoids wasting time in heavy traffic
  • Avoids lengthy tender rides to yachts out on anchor
  • Provides an opportunity for guests to explore their surroundings further
  • Ideal jumping off point for extreme sports such as heli skiing
  • Useful for corporate charter events
  • Safe and comfortable transportation option

A helicopter flies over the Great Barrier Reef

We are seeing huge demand from yacht owners wanting to get their private helipads commercially certified for yacht charters

A heliskier jumping with a helicopter mid flight in the background

As for non-commercial helipads, it can also be used for medical emergencies.

In conclusion, a fully operational helideck is an increasingly desirable feature onboard a charter yacht, which has led to a growing demand for helipad certification. Chris Woods at Safeguard Helidecks Certification confirms this is one of their biggest growth areas: "We are seeing huge demand from yacht owners wanting to get their private helipads commercially certified for yacht charters".

So, although there are currently only a handful of charter yachts offering certified helipads right now, the future looks bright.

We have hand-picked a selection of top-rated superyachts equipped with a commerical landing platform for the ultimate luxury yacht charter.

Superyacht Helipads Explained

Superyacht Helipads Explained

In recent years, the inclusion of helipads on superyachts has become a symbol of luxury and sophistication, reflecting the evolving demands of high-net-worth individuals seeking the ultimate travel experience. This trend underscores the increasing popularity of superyachts with helipads as an integral feature in the world of luxury travel. The seamless integration of air and sea travel, coupled with the prestige and exclusivity associated with helipads, has established these yachts as the epitome of opulence and convenience in the realm of luxury travel. As technology and design continue to advance, helipads are likely to remain a coveted feature, catering to those who seek the pinnacle of luxury and sophistication on the high seas.

Helipads on superyachts enable access to remote and secluded destinations that may be inaccessible by traditional means. This capability expands the horizons of luxury travel, offering owners and guests the opportunity to explore pristine locations far from the typical tourist routes, enhancing the sense of exclusivity and adventure.

For busy individuals with demanding schedules, time is a precious commodity. Helipads on superyachts facilitate swift and efficient travel, minimizing the time spent on transportation logistics. This time-saving aspect is particularly appealing to business moguls, celebrities, and high-profile individuals who value the ability to maximize their time in luxurious surroundings.

The inclusion of a helipad on a superyacht contributes to an enhanced guest experience. Whether it’s welcoming VIPs, business associates, or friends, the convenience of arriving directly on the yacht creates a lasting impression. It adds an element of grandeur to events hosted on the superyacht, making every moment memorable.

The Basics of Superyacht Helipads

A helipad on a superyacht is a specially designed area or platform that serves as a landing and takeoff point for helicopters. The purpose of incorporating a helipad into a superyacht is to provide a means of convenient and direct air access for the yacht’s owner, guests, or VIPs. This feature adds a significant level of flexibility and luxury to the yacht, allowing for seamless transitions between air and sea travel.

Helipads enable direct access to the superyacht, eliminating the need for guests to travel to and from airports or other landing facilities. This convenience is especially valuable for those with busy schedules who seek efficient and seamless travel experiences.

Helipads extend the range of destinations that a superyacht can reach, including remote or secluded areas that are inaccessible by traditional means. This feature enhances the yacht’s versatility, providing the opportunity for unique and exclusive travel experiences.

The inclusion of a helipad adds a prestigious and luxurious element to a superyacht, appealing to high-net-worth individuals who value exclusivity and opulence. It symbolizes the yacht owner’s commitment to providing an unparalleled level of comfort and convenience for themselves and their guests.

Different types of helipads: permanent vs. retractable

Some superyachts have permanent helipads that are integrated into the yacht’s structure and design. These helipads are typically situated on the upper deck and are a visible and constant feature of the yacht. They are constructed using materials which can withstand the weight and rotor wash of helicopters. They often feature non-slip surfaces and include lighting for nighttime operations.

Retractable helipads are designed to be concealed when not in use, preserving the aesthetics of the yacht. These helipads often use hydraulic systems to lower and raise the landing platform into a dedicated storage space beneath the deck. Retractable helipads offer greater versatility in terms of space utilization. When the helipad is retracted, the area can be used for other purposes, such as a sun deck or entertainment space.

Both permanent and retractable helipads contribute to the overall functionality and appeal of superyachts, providing owners and guests with an extraordinary level of convenience and luxury in their travel experiences.

Design and Construction Considerations

The design and construction of helipads on superyachts involve meticulous considerations to ensure safety, functionality, and seamless integration with the vessel’s overall aesthetics. Structural engineers collaborate closely with naval architects to address the unique challenges presented by the maritime environment. For permanent helipads, the design incorporates load-bearing elements capable of supporting the weight of helicopters, considering factors like rotor dynamics and potential vibrations. Non-slip materials, often resistant to saltwater corrosion, are chosen to enhance safety during landing and takeoff. Lighting systems are integrated for nighttime operations. In the case of retractable helipads, hydraulic systems are intricately engineered to facilitate smooth and controlled movements, allowing the platform to seamlessly transition between its stored position and the operational state. Attention is given to the yacht’s weight distribution, ensuring stability during helicopter operations. Overall, the design and construction of these helipads epitomize the marriage of engineering precision with aesthetic harmony, embodying the pinnacle of luxury and functionality in the realm of superyacht amenities.

Compliance with aviation and maritime regulations is paramount when designing and constructing helipads on superyachts, as these structures involve the integration of both air and sea travel elements. The International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) and relevant national aviation authorities set stringent standards for helipad design and operation to ensure safety and adherence to international aviation regulations.

Helipad compliance involves meeting specific criteria related to dimensions, markings, lighting, and safety features to ensure the safe landing and takeoff of helicopters. They must also comply with maritime regulations dictated by classification societies and flag state authorities. These regulations address the structural integrity of the yacht, taking into account the additional load and stresses imposed by helicopter operations.

Compliance extends to the implementation of emergency response protocols, including firefighting equipment, heli-deck crash rescue facilities, and crew training. These measures are in place to address potential emergencies and ensure the safety of passengers, crew, and the vessel itself.

Size and Compatibility

The operation of helipads on superyachts is subject to a comprehensive framework of maritime and aviation regulations to ensure safety and compliance. International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) standards dictate the design, construction, and operational criteria for helipads, emphasizing dimensions, markings, and safety features. National aviation authorities enforce these standards, with flag states and classification societies overseeing maritime aspects. Licensing and permits are crucial for operating a helipad at sea, involving approvals from both aviation and maritime authorities. Yacht owners must obtain helipad certification, demonstrating adherence to aviation standards, and ensure compliance with the yacht’s flag state regulations. Additionally, local permits may be required for each port of call, reflecting the yacht’s commitment to safety, environmental responsibility, and adherence to international and regional regulations governing the dynamic intersection of air and sea travel.

Safety Measures and Protocols

Safety measures for helipad operations on superyachts are paramount to mitigate risks associated with landing and take-off. Rigorous training for both crew and pilots is essential, covering proper communication protocols, emergency procedures, and the use of safety equipment. Emergency response plans include firefighting capabilities, crash rescue facilities, and medical assistance to address unforeseen incidents. Helipads are equipped with lighting systems for nighttime operations, and non-slip materials ensure secure footing during adverse weather conditions. Crew members are trained to handle various helicopter types, and regular drills prepare them for swift and coordinated responses to emergencies. Additionally, pilots undergo specific training to adapt to the unique challenges posed by maritime environments. These comprehensive safety measures underscore the commitment of superyacht owners and operators to prioritize the well-being of passengers, crew, and the integrity of the vessel during helicopter operations.

Operational Considerations

Operating a helipad at sea presents unique challenges which require careful consideration by superyacht owners and operators. The constantly changing maritime environment, including sea conditions and weather fluctuations, can impact helicopter operations. Maintenance and upkeep of the helipad demand regular inspections to ensure structural integrity, non-slip surfaces, and compliance with aviation regulations. Coordination with maritime and air traffic control is essential to facilitate seamless helicopter movements, especially in busy or restricted areas. Effective communication and collaboration with these authorities are crucial to obtain clearances, navigate airspace regulations, and enhance overall safety. Maintenance personnel must be well-trained to address any wear and tear, corrosion, or weather-related damage promptly. These challenges underscore the need for a proactive approach, emphasizing the importance of regular maintenance, effective communication, and a thorough understanding of the dynamic conditions inherent in operating a helipad at sea.

The Luxury and Convenience Factor

Superyachts with helipads represent the pinnacle of luxury travel, seamlessly integrating air and sea transportation for unparalleled convenience and exclusivity. The design and construction of these helipads involve meticulous considerations for safety, compliance with aviation and maritime regulations, and adherence to international standards. Standard helipads on superyachts, ranging from 10 to 18 meters in diameter, accommodate various luxury helicopters, with the size carefully determined based on the yacht’s design and available space. Compliance with licensing, permits, and regulations is essential for operating a helipad at sea, with a focus on safety measures, emergency procedures, and coordination with maritime and air traffic control. The challenges of operating a helipad at sea include addressing the dynamic maritime environment, ensuring maintenance and upkeep, and effective communication with regulatory authorities. Notable examples of superyachts with helipads, like the “Octopus,” highlight the prestige and desirability associated with these luxurious additions, emphasizing their significant impact on the overall value and allure of superyachts in the competitive luxury yacht market.

Top 10 Best Yachts with Helipads

19th jan 2023 by samantha wilson.

Rightboat logo

The world’s superyachts are the most opulent, luxurious and downright impressive machines ever built. And coming high on the list of superyacht design features is a helipad. With helipad design a hot topic for today’s shipbuilders, it would be logical to assume that it’s only the biggest of the yachts that can accommodate them. In fact, the motor yacht Buckpasser was one of the first to be built with a helipad in the 1980s, and at 36.8 metres she is a long way off the largest on the seas.

A helipad  is the superyacht must-have, allowing owners and guests the chance to explore further and get to and from their yacht quicker. These air tenders are the next step from traditional tenders, providing the chance to explore remote far-flung corners of the world, or to simply travel in comfort and ease.

Helipads come in all shapes and sizes on superyachts, with everything from commercial landing pads to touch-and-go decks. Some are designed to blend subtly into the overall aesthetic, either on the aft or foredecks, while others are being designed as a stand-out feature.

Here we take a look at the top10 most impressive yachts with helipads ;

Built by Fincantieri in 2011, Serene makes the top 10 list because she boasts not one but two helipads, one of which converts into a swimming pool when not in use. She was also designed with a helicopter hangar, meaning her helicopters can be stored safely away when the ship is underway as well as allowing for more deck space. Did you know, it is safer to land a helicopter on the aft helipad when the yacht is moving? The reason for this is that being underway gives the yacht more stability.

When Oceanco rolled out 81 metre Alfa Nero in 2007 jaws around the world dropped. At the heart of her exterior design was a huge infinity pool with a glass aft end for uninterrupted views of the sea. Blink, however, and the pool disappears. The floor of the pool can be raised to create a shallow children’s pool, or brought fully up to create a dancefloor or, yes you guessed it, a helicopter landing pad. In keeping with the yacht’s style and elegance, even the helipad is adorned with a teak H.

Almost all of the world’s largest superyachts have helipads on them and Eclipse, standing as one of the largest on the planet at 162 metre is no exception. In fact, this Goliath of yachts – which is owned by Roman Abramovich - has space to accommodate not one, but three helicopters as well as a hangar below the foredeck which acts as a specially designed heli-garage. Eclipse does everything on a grand scale. Even her swimming pool was, at the time of launch, the largest ever built on a superyacht at 16 metres in length.

Planet Nine

There is a new breed of explorer superyacht hitting the seas, and for anyone setting off to explore the most remote parts of the world a helicopter is a must. The 73-metre Planet Nine was built to cruise the planet’s most challenging corners, including expeditions in the Antarctic. As such, she was designed to accommodate two helicopters. Thanks to the use of a huge lift, one chopper can be stowed beneath the helipad in a hangar to make room for a second to land. Because of her long-range explorer capabilities, Planet Nine is also equipped with helicopter refuelling equipment.

If we’re talking about superyachts geared for adventure then the beautiful 72-metre Cloudbreak designed by Espen Øino must make the list. Built-in 2016 for her adventurous owner, she has everything an adrenaline junkie could ever want, including a helipad. Her owner uses the helicopter to enjoy a spot of heli-skiing on inaccessible mountains blanketed in virgin snow. In fact, there’s even a cinema lounge next to the helideck – perfect for watching helmet footage of the day’s exploits.

Lady Christine

On some yachts, the helipad is designed to be as inconspicuous as possible, blending into the overall aesthetic. Lady Christine isn’t one of those yachts. The owner of this 68 metre Feadship was a helicopter pilot himself and so the design very much focused around the helipad, with guests being able to step from the doors of the chopper and into an enclosed sundeck – the aptly named skylounge – in a few paces. The skylonge also doubles as a shelter from winds for greater ease of take-off and landing, showing just how much thought has gone into this key feature of the yacht.

Stella Maris

Also on the list is 72 metre Stella Maris, also by esteemed designer Espen Øino. Like the Lady Christine, Stella Maris’ helipad has been built as a focal point of the exterior design. A huge H sits in the middle of the sundeck, where loungers and adjacent twin swimming pools provide a central space for socialising and entertaining. When it’s time to jet off however, the sunbeds are rolled away and the deck is the perfect helipad. It’s a bold design which is moving away from attempting to hide the helicopter deck but instead creates a centrepiece with a dual purpose.

Another impressive bit of helipad design is seen on the 66 metre Feadship Vanish. Its main helicopter landing area is on the foredeck, however, this yacht unusually has two helipads. A second deck on the aft of the ship is used to store the helicopter when the boat is underway. It means the helicopter has to be moved after passengers have disembarked on the foredeck but provides a secure space for longer passages. The foredeck acts as a landing area for daily operations and can be kept there for very short voyages or on anchor.

Built-in 2015 by Norwegian shipbuilder Kleven , the 107 metre Andromeda – which was named Ulysses when she was first launched – is one of the world’s most astounding explorer yachts. She is designed to cruise through the ice, has an 8,500nm range, and is ready to tackle any destination on the planet in the utmost of luxury. And alongside her commercial helipad, Andromeda also has a heli-hangar on the top deck. It provides both safe storages of the helicopter when the yacht is underway, and enough space to act as a workshop for essential maintenance. Check this Acury Kokomo Ailand MegaYacht for Sale

While superyachts aren’t short on space, it makes sense to maximise the use of a helipad when there isn’t a chopper in situ. The 95-metre Lürssen superyacht Kismet doubles up as a basketball court, with markings painted on it as well as the H. The helipad on this yacht is known as a touch-and-go, meaning choppers land, its passengers disembark and then it takes off again. The helicopter can’t be stored on board, but Kismet’s sports-loving owner wouldn’t want to disrupt the basketball for too long anyway.

Yacht With Helicopter For Sale : A Practical Indulgence

Yacht with Helicopter pad for sale Mi Sueno

There’s no more striking sight in the superyacht world than a helicopter perched on deck anchored in a beautiful setting, and it’s always a thrill to descend on your yacht from the skies, watching the blades churn up the turquoise sea below.

A yacht with a helicopter gives the yacht owner or charterer ultimate freedom to explore, whether you want to go summer skiing via helicopter from your yacht in Alaska, take scenic flights across volcanoes and jungle in the Caribbean, or simply have the convenience of being able to fly to a nearby city for work or pleasure at a moment’s notice.

When you’re holidaying on board a yacht with helicopter, you can begin your charter in superb style by landing on the yacht’s helipad, where the crew will be waiting to greet you. The next morning you might take a breathtaking helicopter ride to a distant island for a glamorous dining and spa experience, or indulge yourself with a helicopter shopping trip along the French Riviera from Monaco to Saint Tropez.

Effortless Cruising, Always in Reach

A yacht with a helicopter means that everything is in easy reach. If business calls from the Hamptons or you fancy a night out in New York, you just step onto your helicopter and fly away, rather than having to organise tender transfers ashore to a nearby airport, or spending the time relocating the yacht to the closest marina.

Yacht with Helicopter pad for sale

A luxury yacht vacation is already considered the most opulent and relaxing way to travel, but by including a helicopter you can vastly increase the area you can travel in a week, and the experiences of the cruising destination. If you’re in Antigua, for instance, but are really craving lunch back at that French restaurant in St Barths you ate at last week, you simply request the helicopter.

The Logistics of a Yacht with Helicopter

Some yachts with helicopters have touch and go helipads located on either the sundeck, boat deck or the foredeck, while larger superyachts and support vessels have designated helicopter hangars to permanently store the helicopter, as well as reserve fuel tanks. Yacht helicopters are crewed by a professional pilot, who may be part of the yacht’s permanent crew, or only come on board when required.

Yacht with Helicopter pad for sale

Yachts with helicopters are particularly popular for remote or long range cruising, as well as with businesspeople who need to remain within reach of major centers and airports for urgent trips.

A yacht with a helicopter not only adds an extra dynamic of adventure and opulence to your charter, but is also extremely practical, allowing you to explore more of the cruising ground while still remaining in easy reach of land. Worth Avenue Yachts has a wide range of yachts with helicopter for sale and charter.

If flying directly from a city, time that would have been spent in endless traffic is spared. If picking you or your guests up from a nearby airport, the comfort and speediness are unparalleled. Transit times are severely reduced, allowing more time to sit back and relax.

7. Safety First

Helicopter taking off from superyacht AIR 265' Feadship

One of the biggest and most important benefits of having a helicopter easily available aboard your superyacht is for safety reasons. With very clear FAA safety regulations for helicopters, this mode of transportation proves to be one of the safest options for getting to and from your vessel. In addition, having a helicopter available in the event of an injury or a passenger getting sick is a critical benefit. Being able to evacuate a guest in an emergency may even be the difference between life and death. Even on vacation, accidents can happen. With the safety of travelers at the top of mind, these advantages are of the utmost importance and can ensure a safe and pleasant trip.

8. Specialized Design

Aerial view of superyacht PROJECT METAVERSE 207’ Delta

Helipads add a sense of wonder and aesthetic to your superyacht. However, it doesn’t stop at good looks. Shipbuilders work together with aviation pros and designers to find the ideal location to place a helipad. Teams work by the Commercial Yacht Code of the Maritime and Coastguard Agency to meet all necessary standards during construction. With a large amount of space needed to place a helicopter landing deck on a superyacht, attention to detail and impeccable design are paramount. You’ll know you’ve got the best of the best.

Transform big dreams into reality with this yacht: PROJECT METAVERSE | 207’ Delta

No matter how you look at it, having a helicopter on your superyacht changes the game. A helicopter ups the ante in all arenas, from fun to design to safety. Make sure your yacht includes this high-class feature. Contact a Denison yacht broker to upgrade your yacht and you’ll be flying high, too.

RP120

Palmilla superyacht concept on the water

Introducing Palmilla: the five-deck 73m concept with its own helipad

Related articles.

Superyacht design studio Rodriguez Design has revealed a 73 metre full-displacement superyacht concept named Palmilla.

Built with a steel and aluminium superstructure and spread across five decks, the yacht’s design is a “tale of two stories”, featuring a combination of round surfaces at the bow and sharper ones at the stern.

Speaking about the concept, designer Josh Rodriguez said: “We like our clients to see it change as they move around the yacht. The yacht should feel alive and move with the guests.”

The main deck hosts an aft “social area”, featuring a swimming pool with sun pads and a bar. Forward are two VIP cabins, the main saloon and a separate dining area.

The upper deck is accessed by a hidden staircase amidships and features a large lounging area alongside a 14 person al fresco dining table. From here, wide external corridors lead up to the touch-and-go helipad big enough for an Airbus ACH 145 helicopter on the bow.

The owner’s deck sits above and features a private aft deck pool. Speaking about this level, Rodriguez said: “We wanted to make this deck as a fortress of solitude. With the current COVID situation, it gives the owner to be completely isolated, acting as an apartment inside of the yacht itself.”

Elsewhere, the sun deck features a Jacuzzi and gym equipment aft. Palmilla’s design makes full use of its 13.3 metre beam and comfortably sleeps 14 in seven cabins.

Powered by twin MTU 16V 4000 M63L diesel engines, Palmilla has a top speed of 18 knots and is capable of a range of 4,000 nautical miles at 11 knots.

The World’s Most Expensive Yachts—Including Some That Cost Billions

By Brett Berk

most expensive yachts

Though superyachts are already among the most costly consumer items available, the prices of the most expensive yachts in the world are still astounding. In recent decades, those with money to burn have settled on these floating palaces as an ideal locus for demonstrating their prosperity, and, as such, the global luxury yacht industry is undergoing a golden age. The world’s überwealthy think of their motor yachts as toys, and they’re constantly trying to outdo each other in scale, design, amenities, materials, and sheer profligacy.

Knowing this, what features does it take to own one of the most expensive yachts in existence? And how much do these opulent vessels actually cost? To that end, AD has compiled a list of the five priciest superyachts currently out on the water. As with many things connected to the very wealthy, details are shrouded in secrecy—often intentionally—to shield the assets from taxation or seizure, or to protect privacy.

Below, dive into the five reportedly most expensive yachts in the world.

5. Dubai ($400 million)

Image may contain Transportation Vehicle Yacht and Boat

This 531-foot yacht is reportedly owned by United Arab Emirates Prime Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Ruler of Dubai. Though it was originally planned for another Middle Eastern potentate, Prince Jefri Bolkiah of Brunei, he suddenly voided the contract in 2001. With exteriors designed by Andrew Winch and interiors by Platinum Yachts, this German-built Blohm + Voss vessel features several Jacuzzis, a pool inlaid with handmade mosaic tiles that is reportedly large enough to hold 115 people, a circular staircase, a discotheque with an appropriately sized dance floor, squash courts, a movie theater, a dining room for 90 guests (the other 25 presumably have to eat in the pool?), a helipad, and a submarine.

4. Topaz ($527 million)

most expensive yacht

Resembling a stealth bomber, this 483-foot ship is reportedly owned by Russian fertilizer and coal oligarch Andrey Melnichenko. With exteriors by Tim Heywood Design Ltd. and interior designs by Terence Disdale Design, this German-built Lürssen Yacht features a 2,500-square-foot primary bedroom, six guest suites (with moveable walls so they can be transformed into four grand staterooms), glassware and tableware fashioned from French crystal, a helicopter hangar, a 30-foot speedboat tender, and three swimming pools, including one with a glass-bottom dangling menacingly above a disco.

3. Azzam ($600 million)

most expensive yachts

This 590-foot ship is currently thought to be the largest private yacht in the world and one of the fastest, with a top speed of 35 miles per hour. To achieve this immense scale and speed, it required a pair of gas turbines and two stratospherically potent diesel engines, rendering it very difficult to build. It is reportedly owned by a member of the royal family of the UAE, Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan. With exteriors by Nauta Yacht and interiors by French decorator Cristophe Leoni, this yacht was also built by Lürssen in Germany. The vessel is set apart by its early 19th-century Empire-style veneered furniture, as well as its state-of-the-art security systems, including a fully bulletproof primary suite and a high-tech missile deterrence capabilities.

2. Eclipse ($1.5 billion)

most expensive yachts

In addition to being the second-costliest, this 533-footer is thought to be the world’s second-largest private yacht. Owned by Russian billionaire Roman Abramovich , the ship was claimed to be located in Turkey and may be impounded as part of the United Kingdom’s sanctions against Russia. Designed by Terry Disdale and built by Blohm + Voss, it features two-dozen guest cabins, two swimming pools, two helipads, and multiple hot tubs. For privacy and security reasons, it hosts a missile detection system, bulletproof windows in the primary bedroom and on the bridge, an anti-paparazzi shield, and, when all of that fails, a mini-submarine that can take a few VIPs 164 feet under the ocean’s surface.

1. History Supreme ($4.8 billion)

History Supreme has never actually been seen in a major port, and rumors suggest that the yacht may not be real and instead just a publicity stunt. Reportedly owned by Malaysia’s richest man, Robert Kuok, and designed by Stuart Hughes in the UK, the yacht is only a paltry 100 feet long. Its worth is said to be derived from its lavish finishes, including a statue constructed from genuine Tyrannosaurus rex bones, a liquor bottle embedded with an 18.5-carat diamond, and a primary bedroom with one wall made from meteorite and another from a 24-karat gold Aquavista Panoramic Wall Aquarium. If you see it somewhere, let us know.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much is Jeff Bezos’s yacht?

Most Expensive Yachts

This is why people like Amazon founder Jeff Bezos work to keep their yachts out of the public eye. Though we are not including Jeff Bezos’s yacht, Koru (Maori for “coil”), in this list because it is a sailing yacht and thus excluded from the realm of these motor yachts, it created controversy in the Netherlands when its presence became known. Jeff Bezos’s abided the $500 million price tag of Oceanco, the Dutch custom yacht builder, to create the 417-foot megayacht. But when the company, at Bezos’s behest, requested that a local bridge be dismantled to make way for its gigantic mast on its journey from the shipyard, public sentiment turned against the cento-billionaire, and Oceano shelved its request. Maybe a port like Monaco would be more accommodating?

Also not on this list is the world’s largest private yacht, reportedly owned by Alisher Usmanov. Though size and cost typically scale in the world of superyachts, this is not always the case (see #1 in this list.) Also, Somnio, the 728-feet dream-monikered yacht liner that tops our list of the world’s largest private yachts , isn’t quite done being constructed. And it is not, like most of the largest superyachts, privately owned by one individual or family—it’s a kind of floating condo, with 39 eight-figure homes available to potential owners solely by invitation.
