Bahrain Yacht Club

Our Story – How it all began

The Bahrain Yacht Club (BYC) was originally founded in 1955, as the Manama Sailing Association by members of the Royal Air Force (RAF).All the club’s dinghies were actually owned by the RAF and the clubhouse was located on the RAF jetty at Gudaibiya. This jetty, during the Second World War, had been taken over by the RAF as a base for Sunderland flying boats and high-speed patrol and rescue launches. However, the RAF’s interest in sailing was not exceptional and soon the Club had more civilian than service members.

The RAF Commanding Officer at the time was so displeased and was determined to have the civilians removed. In 1962 a resolute Australian named Gordon Wheale (the Commercial Manager of Gray Mackenzie in Bahrain) and another expatriate (in charge of Customs) leased a ship called the MV HIDD, which lay listing in the Khorr off Muharraq, from a local merchant called Yusuf Toorani.

The ship was a 150 ton wooden Hulled copper bottomed ex-BAPCO survey ship and it was towed to the small jetty at Mina Salman (before the present harbor was built) where the fuel tanks from the stern area were removed. This area made a nice “snug” bar for the winter, whilst the summer bar was topside, with adequate coolers to slake the thirst of the hard working expatriates. As the boat was moored off the beach, access to the ship was via a draw string pulley on an old snipe hull. The lighting and other power requirements on the ship were provided by a small single cylinder diesel generator.

In the early 60s there were six sailing clubs on the island:

  • The HMS Juffair Sailing Club
  • The Joint Services Sailing Club
  • The Hamala (Army) S.0
  • The Zallaq (BAPCO) S.C
  • The RAF S.C. (moved to Muharraq)
  • The Manama Sailing Association.

With the advent of the Mina Salman port, the Manama Sailing Club had to move (approximately 1964), and went cap in hand back to the RAF who allowed the Club to moor the MV HIDD alongside the RAF jetty. The MV HIDD floated at high tides but sat in a bed of concrete bags at low tide, more or less like a bed to keep it upright. With a high wind and tide the HIDD used to ride over the bed bags and then lie on its side to be pumped out by the resident boy.

The monthly rental for the boat was 100 BD, and when the owner, Toorani refused to sell the boat to the Manama Sailing Club, the members then decided to purchase a former concrete carrying barge, which belonged to Gordon Wheale. It had a roof over the hold and made an ideal clubhouse.

The following years, were somewhat peripatetic for the Manama Sailing Club. When the RAF left Bahrain in 1971, the Government of Bahrain most generously granted the Association the use of the RAF jetty under the condition that the association paid only for the security guards. Soon after, the Mina Salman Port expanded, and the tug/barge headquarters had to move to the Muharraq Causeway, then back across the bay to the RAF jetty where it was moored together with two platforms. There, on 24th April 1972 it quietly sank, carrying the entire bar stocks and fridge to Davy Jones’ locker.

Nonetheless, the Manama Sailing Club was recognized by the Royal Yachting Association on 11th February 1972, much to everyone’s surprise!

Sadly, people watched the reclamation dredging of the harbor get closer and closer until finally the jetty was completely surrounded by sand. Boats could be pulled to the new water’s edge by trolley, but clearly boat-owners couldn’t go on like that forever!

The Committee once again appealed to the Government for a new site. In April 1977, Sitra was chosen with the hope that a channel would be dredged to open water. This fifth move of the Manama Sailing Club was a lot of work for the Committee, members and staff alike. Cabins were bought and assembled and old buildings refurbished.

The sixth and final move was to a superb new site and premises at Ras Hala Umrn al Baidh, when the late Amir Sh. Isa Bin Salman Al Khalifa, had decreed that the BYC had to stay in the present location and a lease was provided for a period of twenty years.

On the 1st January 1979, the members voted to change the name from the Manama Sailing Association to the Bahrain Yacht Club. It was then, and remains to this day, the premier water sports club in Bahrain.

The Present

Today, the Bahrain Yacht Club is a friendly, inclusive water sports club with active racing, activities and cruising. The emphasis is on fun and friendly interaction, in a beautiful waterfront location.

We’re writing that right now – why not join us and become part of the story!

The development is spearheaded by Bahrain Marina Development, a wholly owned subsidiary of the Social Insurance Organisation (SIO). Construction commenced in November 2023 with the laying of the foundation stone.

Bahrain Marina is envisioned to become a landmark lifestyle destination in Bahrain, playing a pivotal role in one of the strategic development projects aimed at diversifying Bahrain’s economy.

It is expected to significantly contribute to the strengthening of the real estate development sector, bolstering the country’s non-oil GDP.

Bahrain Marina details

Occupying an expansive area of more than 256,000m², the project will predominantly feature residential units, hotels, retail spaces, beaches, and a variety of water sports activities.

Designed with inclusivity at its core, Bahrain Marina is designed with inclusivity at its foundation with innovative new concepts for social gatherings and events, as well as creative spaces that reflect the rich history and spirit of Bahrain.

The Marina Club building, the Corniche, a selection of various stores and restaurants, and the sea promenade were all designed to reflect the history and spirit of the nation’s heritage.

The Bahrain Marina development is expected to emerge as a key destination for both permanent and temporary residences . The development will offer 274 freehold homes, 304 deluxe hotel rooms, and 1,769 underground parking spaces. Additionally, Bahrain Marina will feature 182 berths, catering to yachts and boats.

Residential offerings at Bahrain Marina

The residential options at Bahrain Marina will encompass apartments, penthouses, and duplexes, with waterfront residences providing an array of choices from spacious studios to one-, two-, and three-bedroom apartments.

Residents will have exclusive access to a Recreation Level, complete with a state-of-the-art gym, sauna and steam rooms, a squash court, a theatre, a games room, a children’s playroom, a multi-purpose room, an indoor swimming pool, and an outdoor swimming pool area.

Bahrain Marina hotel and retail components

The Bahrain Marina Hotel will be a five-star establishment within the project, with a total area of 68,637m².

A private beach and waterfront lodging created with high-quality fittings and furnishings will complement the beachfront lifestyle.

The hotel resort will encompass branded residential apartments, and hospitality units, including floating villas. The resort will also feature several amenities such as restaurants, a sunset lounge, a beach club, a spa, and a modern art gym.

In April 2018, Bahrain Marina Development announced the appointment of the Hong Kong-based Shangri-La Hotels and Resorts as Bahrain Marina’s hotel operators.

Bahrain Marina will be home to 192 retail units, comprising international shops, restaurants, cafés, and a commercial complex that will host 33 stores. A wide range of shops and stores will be dotted along the boardwalk overlooking the sea, providing an unparalleled shopping experience.

Recreational spaces at Bahrain Marina

Bahrain Marina will feature a 3,200m² marina clubhouse, complete with entertainment activities and marine programmes.

The Yacht Club will be a members-only establishment, featuring a lobby designed to evoke a nautical atmospheric impression of light and spaciousness.

Contractors involved

Nass Contracting, a subsidiary of Nass Corporation, has been appointed as the principal contractor for the Bahrain Marina development project.

Bahrain-based Mohamed Salahuddin Consulting Engineering Bureau (MSCEB) is tasked with overseeing the architecture, design engineering, and construction supervision.

Benoy, an architecture and master planning firm based in the UK, crafted the master plan for the project.

In 2016, Al Hassanain Contracting was awarded a contract to manage the marine works for Bahrain Marina. The contract encompasses a comprehensive range of enabling and marine-related tasks, including dredging, land reclamation, earthworks, shore protection, quay walls, and culvert crossings.

Arab Architects provided the design services for the residential buildings.

Luxury Scheme and Marina Yacht Club design by Benoy Architects in the Gulf, Middle East

22 Jan 2015

Bahrain Marina Masterplan Design

Location: Manama, Bahrain

Design: Benoy, Architects

Benoy, the international, award-winning Architecture, Masterplanning, Interior and Graphic Design firm, is thrilled to announce the first phase of the Bahrain Marina Development in Manama, Bahrain.

Bahrain Marina Masterplan

The firm has just completed the Concept Masterplan for this luxury scheme which will reinvent the current marina with a 150,000m2 mixed-use design including the prestigious Bahrain Marina Yacht Club.

State-of-the-art facilities across several sectors, comprising Residential, Entertainment, Leisure and Hospitality will further develop this bustling capital city. With a 5-Star hotel, serviced apartments, retail offers, a cinema and a wide variety of food and beverage options, the Benoy Masterplan will create a landmark community anchored by the Bahrain Marina Yacht Club situated at the heart of the project.

Subtle aspects of the design, such as the wide promenade encouraging visitors to meander through the retail area and enjoy the water features which will accent the vibrant atmosphere, along with other prominent amenities, combine to create this new lifestyle icon. The development will completely transform the current waterside area of Manama into a premier destination reaching far beyond the Gulf Coast region.

Working with Amlak, the real estate investment arm and a wholly-owned subsidiary of Bahrain’s Social Insurance Organisation (SIO), Benoy is proud to visualise its first project for the company.

Further commenting on the development, a spokesperson from Amlak stated that, “this Masterplan not only meets our brief of driving further investment into the Kingdom, but Benoy’s design brings a world-class development all residents and visitors can thoroughly enjoy. We are very keen to position the Bahrain Marina Development as a National Landmark.”

Paul Priest, Benoy Director and Head of MENA Studios, commented that “the Bahrain Marina Masterplan has been inspired by the beautiful natural environment blended with the energy of the Capital.”

“With the support of Amlak on this stunning and diverse project, we are sure it will quickly become an iconic development in the Benoy portfolio,” Paul added.

56m perini navi sailing yacht BAYESIAN yacht sinks off coast of sicily

Latest: British tech giant Mike Lynch among those missing after 56m Perini Navi sailing yacht Bayesian sinks in Italy

According to Reuters, British tech entrepreneur Mike Lynch, once dubbed 'Britain's Bill Gates', is among those missing after the 56-metre Perini Navi sailing yacht Bayesian capsized and sunk off the coast of Palermo, Italy. Lynch is among several people missing. One person has been confirmed dead, according to the Italian Port Authority.

Live updates:

  • A search and rescue is currently underway for six people missing in the waters off Palermo on the Italian island of Sicily.
  • Mike Lynch, a British technology entrepreneur who co-founded Autonomy Corporation and founded Invoke Capital, is among the missing. Lynch’s wife, Angela Bacares, and a one-year-old child are among fifteen people who were rescued.
  • Another sailing vessel in the area, the 42-metre Sir Robert Baden Powell ,  is understood to have stepped in to offer assistance in the initial rescue.
  •  It is understood that divers have already dived to reach the hull, which lies at 45 metres of depth about half a mile from the coast. The yacht had the largest aluminium masts of any sailing yacht on the water.
  • International media has reported that many of the passengers are British nationals.
  • Eyewitnesses in the area reported "hurricane" conditions off the coast but local weather websites did not indicate any severe squall, which suggests that the weather event was not forecast.
  • At around 5am local time on 19 August, Bayesian was hit by bad weather and sunk.  The sailing yacht was anchored or idle at the time of the incident.

Built in Italy by renowned builder Perini Navi and delivered in 2008, the yacht's naval architecture was developed by Ron Holland Design while the interior design is by Rémi Tessier . She was formerly known as Salute and was last refitted in 2016. She was listed for sale earlier this year, according to BOATPro . The yacht had accommodation for nine guests and 12 crew.

BOAT International will update the story as it develops.

Sales associate Robert Gillis , aka "Diner Bob," is known for his interaction with diner and breakfast-lunch café owners throughout the state in representing the firm. So how did the sale of this popular marina come about? Well simply put, Mr. Gillis hit the "high seas" to make the sale!

The Laurel Harbor Marina and Yacht Club, located at 502 Laurel Blvd., Lanoka Harbor, New Jersey , a 156 slip, protected marina situated on the Jersey Shore in the heart of Ocean County , has been sold. It was owned and operated by the Spalliero family for over twenty years. As fate would have it, the Spalliero family, with a wide array of real estate holdings, also has a long professional relationship with both Mr. Gillis and Bielat Santore & Company.

"In all honesty, the sale process for the 156-slip marina accommodating boats from 20 to 50 feet was a real challenge," notes Gillis. The business included slip rentals, a marine repair shop, winter storage, shrink wrapping, gas, the sale of parts, merchandise, ramp keys, etc. The firm had no problem finding prospective buyers, however. The marina generated a great deal of interest, producing dozens of qualified buyers. The former owner had developed a tight-knit, family-oriented environment and really wanted a buyer, preferably another family, to continue the legacy they had created. After considering several offers, Mr. Gillis was able to negotiate acceptable terms with the right buyer; a family from Jackson, New Jersey that recently sold a large mobile home park they had owned and operated for years.

Bielat Santore & Company has sold various marinas over the years. Now, Mr. Gillis with the knowledge he acquired during the past year, and the lineup of marina buyers he collected, has "set sail" in pursuit of additional marina listings, concentrating on the Jersey Shore, specifically those marinas in Monmouth and Ocean Counties.

Inside the Maldives’ first superyacht marina, the newest playground of the super rich

Y ou’d be forgiven for assuming the Maldives, a country that is 99 per cent water and a playground for the uber wealthy, comfortably caters for the yachting elite. The archipelago’s 172 luxury resorts, many of which are built on private islands, offer every conceivable amenity, from sublime underwater spas to incongruous snow rooms. Yet a purpose-built superyacht marina is a glaring omission from the list, an anomaly that Atoll Estates is looking to change.

The UAE-based company has revealed plans for a five-star development set within 500 hectares of a natural lagoon in the South Malé Atoll. Located just 21 miles from Malé International airport (which completes a large expansion in 2025 to cater for the estimated 4.3 million travellers passing through each year), Zamani Islands will comprise three individual resorts spread across eight islands. Designed in partnership with Dubai-based architects Killa Design, it promises to host the island chain’s first dedicated superyacht marina.

“By providing state-of-the-art facilities for superyachts , the marina will attract more high-net-worth individuals and yachting enthusiasts to the region,” says Amit Majumder, co-founder and managing partner of Atoll Estates, who believes the influx will boost local tourism. “The increased yachting traffic will foster the development of related services and infrastructure, further establishing the Maldives as a premier yachting destination on the global stage.”

The initial phase of the development, set to open in 2026, will include the first of three distinct resorts made up of a collection of private residences, each with a private pier for yacht tenders. Lifelong berthing at the marina (once complete) will also be included. The second “multi-experiential” resort is aimed at families and couples with a private island beach club for over 21s, while the third “lifestyle” resort will have a total of 300 keys, a yacht and sailing club and the largest events and entertainment venue in the country.

Spanning a whopping 60,000 square metres, Zamani Islands marina’s full-service facilities are pitched to include crew amenities, provisioning, maintenance and access to a yacht club. Of the 120 yacht berths, 60 will be dedicated to superyachts upwards of 30m in length, with a single dockside mooring of up to 200m. Other resort amenities include the first medical spa in the country (though Soneva’s two wellness complexes may have pipped them to the post), personal butler service, and 28 food and beverage venues, including an underwater restaurant.

It’s no secret that the Maldives’ wide-open waters, vibrant coral reefs and diving hot spots make it a yachting haven. Around 70 to 100 large motor and sailing yachts arrive in Maldivian waters each year (per 2021-2023 Maldivian Coast Guard cruising permit applications). The country’s strategic location in the Indian Ocean also makes it a convenient stopover for yachts travelling between the Middle East, southeast Asia, and the Indian subcontinent. According to tracking data compiled by Bloomberg, the Maldives saw more visiting yachts than Hong Kong and Singapore combined in 2023, slightly outpacing Thailand. So why has there not been a superyacht marina in the pipeline before now?

“For the past 20 years, the Maldives’ private resort tourism model has proven highly profitable and pretty low risk,” says Splinter Fangman, a yacht and berth broker at Edmiston. “With a superyacht marina, it’s still a gamble whether the yachts will actually use it.”

For vessels upwards of 70m that can sustain themselves at anchor for weeks at a time, the Maldives’ current lack of infrastructure isn’t an issue. Yachts like 134m Serene and 97m Faith are self-sufficient floating resorts equipped with their own high-end amenities, even the aforementioned snow room. Provisioning and fuel bunkering is done ship to ship using a large barge that caters for private island resorts. Though the opportunity to dock at a marina to use shore power, turn off systems and generators, and allow the crew to go ashore is appealing, it’s not a requisite, says Fangman, especially for owners who prize privacy above all else.

For smaller yachts that depend on the services of a marina, making the crossing to the Indian Ocean can be challenging. That said, the Maldives is well placed to capture substantial traffic in the burgeoning Asia-Pacific yachts, while vessels based in the Middle East regard it as an attractive alternative to the crowded anchorages of the Caribbean.

“A marina in the Maldives will pull through huge numbers of yachts from the Red Sea and Persian Gulf,” says Donovan Chong, an independent marina entrepreneur. He cites the 146m Lürssen-built Opera, owned by Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, the deputy prime minister of the United Arab Emirates, which typically berths in Dubai, as a frequent visitor to the Maldivian archipelago.

Demand for a marina that caters to the super rich is now a strategic focus for the Maldives, adds Chong, who notes there are several additional imminent marina projects in the pipeline. “The Maldivian government has made it a top priority to explore new tourism verticals beyond hotels and resorts and to establish the Maldives as the ‘eastern terminus’ of the yachting world.”

He believes a dedicated marina will unlock the untapped potential of the Maldives as a charter (yacht rental) hot spot, and that future resorts need to be built around the marina, rather than treating it as an amenity. Majumder agrees. “Zamani Islands is more than just a residence; it is a lifestyle — one that seamlessly blends the opulence of land and sea, providing a haven for those who appreciate the finer things in life.” In other words, build it and the yachts will come.
