INTRODUCTION

The Ron Holland-designed Discovery 55 sets a high benchmark for the luxury, push button cruising yacht category.

The interior layout is brilliant with a raised dinette, pilot station, large passageway galley, full beam aft owner’s stateroom, bunk room, and VIP guest stateroom. Interior design details are by the renowned mega yacht stylist Ken Freivokh. The light maple interior and large saloon windows make the interior bright and airy. A walk-in engine room allows superb machinery access.

BIGOUDEN is hull no.19 of this Discovery 55 series. She was launched in 2007 and spent most of her life in the eastern Mediterranean with light seasonal use and on-land storage until November of 2017 when she participated in the ARC rally ending up in the Caribbean. From there she continued up the east coast to Newport, Rhode Island, where she had cruised summers while being professionally maintained indoors at Bristol Marine in Somerset, Massachusetts. Her condition is therefore excellent when compared to sisterships that have circumnavigated as is their wont and capability. She has never been chartered and has always received the best of care. Electronics were updated with a full suite of the latest Raymarine Hybrid Touch displays. BIGOUDEN is now in Newport, RI, and available for viewing. She has just been bottom-painted and is ready for summer cruising in New England or beyond.

Broker notes

ACCOMMODATIONS

BIGOUDEN has three cabins - the owner’s stateroom being aft and the two guest cabins being forward. The forward cabin is a spacious centerline double with headboard forward. Pullman cabin aft and to port has spacious twin bunks.

Additional berths are available in the saloon - one dedicated pilot berth to starboard, and one that can be prepared on the saloon seating (all with lee cloths). There are two heads, both with separate enclosed shower compartments, one forward and one owner’s en-suite. A walk-in engine room is entered through the aft shower stall and located beneath the cockpit, providing easy access to maintainable items.

Interior joinery is maple, chosen over the usual cherry, with bird’s eye accents making for a very bright, elegant and stunning living space. Maple staving lines hull sides in cabins and the galley. All upholstery and curtains were updated in 2020 with “Flag Blue” main salon cushions and beige leather seats at the nav station and owner’s stateroom. Cabin soles are teak and holly laminate throughout, with removable (no studs) carpets (New 2022) in all floor areas.

  • Light switches and sockets in polished chrome
  • Custom fitted drawers for storing tableware and glasses

The main saloon is what makes the Discovery 55 unique. The dinette is raised, providing a panoramic view of the ocean and anchorage outside. The navigation station is also raised. A pilot berth is forward of the nav station with storage drawers and cabinets below the berth. The chartplotter, radar and autopilot are easily viewed from the forward-facing navigators seat allowing one to stand with excellent visibility staying warm and dry. Entrance to the accommodation is via three deep and wide companionway steps. Large grab handles are fitted avoiding the need to step down backwards.

A large bank of drawers and cabinets is located below the countertop aft of the stove. Inboard, is the “clean up” area with top opening trash bin, double sinks, a dish drying basin, storage cabinets, and built-in microwave. DECK and HULL

BIGOUDEN has Navy Blue Awlgripped hull (Bristol Marine, Somerset, MA, 2019) with thin gold cove strip and red over white boot stripes. Three opening hull side ports on each side and an opening port in the transom assist interior views and ventilation. The functional and gracious Ron Holland-design has a flared/overhanging bow to keep the decks dry in a seaway and facilitate clear anchor deployment from the stemhead bow rollers. The reverse transom is scooped in way of the swim step and mid-level steps to the main deck. This well-designed stern serves many functions. A telescoping stainless steel swim ladder is housed just above the waterline where it can easily be extended by a swimmer in the water, an important safety feature. A stainless-steel crab bar is just above the swim ladder. Two hinged-top storage lockers are located in the full-beam mid-height step, excellent for storing dive/snorkel gear, fishing gear, and outboard engine gas. An additional small step makes for easy ascension to the main deck.

Staying on deck is vital to safety aboard any offshore cruising yachts and the Discovery 55 is well set up for crew safety. A 3” tall, raised bulwark surrounds the deck and is topped with a 3.5” wide teak caprail. The bulwark rises to 6” high at the bow with a graceful spring of the sheer line. Large stainless-steel mooring cleats are mounted atop the caprails, eliminating the need for chocks. Extra-high stanchions are set into the bulwark, keeping side decks open and uncluttered. Double stainless steel-uncoated wire lifelines run from stern pushpit to bow pulpit with interruption at the midship’s boarding gates.

Ground tackle and handling gear is well-suited for a world class cruising yacht. Double Delrin bow rollers with massive stainless-steel cheeks are welded to the stemhead and recessed into the caprail. The anchor locker is top opening and drains overboard.

The deck and coachroof are overlayed with 12mm thick teak and rubber. This decking is recessed level into the coachroof forward of the raised saloon and aft of the cockpit. Large, aluminum-framed tinted safety glass windows in the forward face and sides of the raised saloon delineate this yacht as a Discovery. The two outboard forward-facing windows hinge open when airflow is desired in the saloon. A visored and well-cambered roof tops this raised saloon.

Stainless steel handrails are secured outboard along both sides of this deckhouse. Sailing yachts designed for long range cruising need ample “deck-accessible” storage. A large bow locker just aft of anchor locker is entered through a gasketed and guttered flush deck hatch. The aft bulkhead is watertight and serves well as a collision bulkhead. Two quarter lockers are accessed through flush, gasketed and guttered deck hatches. Two side deck lockers are to port midships. The aft locker is dedicated to cooking gas.

Another hallmark feature of the Discovery 55 is the comfortable and well-protected center cockpit. Located behind the raised saloon with narrow, curved coamings rising above the aft coachroof, this space serves well for sailing or lounging. The settees have high backs and are inlaid with teak and rubber. The cockpit widens slightly outboard of the helm. The cockpit sole is also covered with teak and rubber and drains forward into a grating covered “line tail” trough. A fixed teak cockpit table with hinged side leaves breaks up this wide cockpit. A tan canvas dodger mounted atop a raised foundation base protects the forward cockpit and companionway. A large tan bimini folds up from behind the cockpit to provide shelter from rain or sun when desired. Cockpit cushions consist of closed-cell foam covered with tan yacht acrylic.

The steering pedestal is well aft in the cockpit and has many control and monitoring functions mounted within easy reach of this command location. Controls at the helm include: Yanmar engine panel, water in fuel alarm, engine exhaust alarm, engine throttle/shifter, bow thruster, VHF RAM mic, compass, autopilot, radar/chartplotter, anchor windlass up/down, primary winch controls; deck, compass, transom, locker, boom, pedestal, steaming, spreader, strobe, and boom (cockpit illumination) lights.

A unique feature of this Discovery 55 is the hot tub located in the footwell aft of the helm. Imagine soaking in hot salt or fresh water after a long day’s sail in cold climates…

Discovery 55, TICKETEEBOO

Discovery Yachts Ltd., Discovery 55 Built 2009 / £498,500, + VAT

Discovery 55, TICKETEEBOO 1 Main

Broker’s Comments

Discovery 55, TICKETEEBOO is still in her original ownership and has proved to be a very successful platform for 2 handed sailing as well as a great destination for family to join along the way. She has been carefully maintained through life and has been used in the Mediterranean and has also sailed the north Atlantic circuit to the Caribs. As with her sisters she is a benchmark blue water cruising yacht with furling Solent rig and easy handling.

She has an anodised spar which is easy to look after and the signature Discovery dark blue hull livery. Her interior woodwork is executed in cherrywood and she has a very full specification for Mediterranean cruising.

Owner’s Comments

TICKETEEBOO was built and handed-over to us in August 2009. It was certainly a wonderful occasion. Within a week or so we set-off towards the Eastern Mediterranean and based her there until deciding we fancied a little trip to the Caribbean and back in 2014. Whilst in the Med, we’ve mostly sailed her eight weeks during Spring and eight weeks Autumn. We’re not midsummer sailors! Towards the end of 2013 we brought her out of the Mediterranean and enjoyed visiting Porto Santo, Maderia and the Canary Islands before ‘parking’ her up over Chrstmas ahead of embarking towards the Caribbean on New Year’s Day. We achieved landfall, Barbados, within 19 days and then on towards Grenada before working our way northwards, visiting many islands, finishing at Jolly Harbour, Antigua where we berthed her for a month whilst we were at home in the UK. On the return passage we visited some beautiful bays at Barbuda and the BVIs, then Bermuda, followed by most of the Azores islands, which we found equal to the very best. From there we sailed to northwest Spain (because we wanted to visit and spend some time in the Rias before making our way towards Gibraltar, where we had a berth booked at Queensway – another favourite place). All told, 2014 was the year we sailed TICKETEEBOO the most. Just wonderful and probably our most outstanding year on board. Sadly, also the year CHEEKY RAFAKI was lost – we were searching no further than a mile away when the upturned ‘keel-less’ hull was located by the US Navy.

During the last several years, we based TICKETEEBOO at a fine shipyard www.bsg.com.gr. This meant her being in a steel cradle (on the hard) when we were not sailing her. We certainly enjoyed having access to Aegean waters and visited almost all the Greek islands at one time or another. However, we had one more country to visit, two if including Montenegro. Early 2022 we finally managed to claim an annual berth at https://aci-marinas.com/marina/aci-veljko-barbieri-slano, which is our base for now and we are intending to renew our contract for an additional year soon. A Slano is a super base.

TICKETEEBOO is a fine ocean-going yacht, which is also ideally suited to sailing the Mediterranean or Caribbean, in the way we like to. For example, our preference is to swing on the hook in quiet bays. We provision extensively when we first go to her, making full use of the large freezer and refrigerator we have on board. When our watermaker membrane filters needed replacing we upgraded from 106 litres per hour to approx 140 litres per hour. This simply means we run our generator less often! We’ve always made our own fresh water and have plenty so have never needed to use seawater to flush toilets. No smells & no pipes blocking-up.

When choosing owner-options during build time, we were told solar panels were not needed because we could charge batteries in quick-time when running the generator. Whilst true, we set-about adding solar panels whilst berthed Gibraltar 2014. We added a couple of 20W semi-flexible panels to keep our engine and generator 12V batteries fully charged. We also added a combined total of 300W semi-flexible panels to help support our house batteries, as well keep them fully charged. These worked well to keep all batteries fully charged whilst we have been absent from the yacht. However, their contribution whilst sailing has been limited. We subsequently decided to design a framework to add 600W solar panels and use the frame to conveniently secure our Radome, antennas, as well our passerelle (when berthed stern-to). Also to provide convenient lifting of our outboard. This project has proven very successful. It’ll never achieve a pay-back, although typically takes care of our entire electrical load during daylight hours. Hence, we now seldom need to run the generator to charge batteries (although we always top-up before turning-in each night). Since coming to Slano, however, we’re finding we’re enjoying the marina ambience – maybe we should have expected this! Our watermaker has remained ‘pickled’ this year and our diesel fuel consumption is much lower than before. We have shore power readily available so our solar panels are doing very little. How times can change!

We believe we have improved TICKETEEBOO over the years. An occasional ‘knocking’ noise when sailing in heavy following seas always bugged us. Eventually we pinned down the cause. It was the rudder shaft, slight movement, when the pressure on the rudder changed sides in a following sea. Certainly noticeable when trying to sleep in the aft cabin on our Atlantic crossings! Whilst at Gibraltar, I approached the nearby engineers in Spain, agreed the scope of supply, and had additional needle roller upper-bearing fitted. I also had a troublesome Tides Marine propshaft seal replaced. The result – 8 years without the rudder ‘knocking’ in all conditions and a perfect trouble-free propshaft seal arrangement.

Owning and sailing a Discovery 55 can be a challenge at times. During our early years of ownership we regularly discovered parts we wish could have been done differently during manufacture. When Discovery Yachts were still in business and we were visiting Southampton, Sue was asked if we were considering purchasing a new model. Her answer came from the heart when Sue said “We’ve spent several years improving TICKETEEBOO. Why would we want to start all-over again?” Despite these comments, we’ve never regretted or doubted our decision to buy this yacht and we’ve never seen a another sailing yacht we would want to own and sail and we absolutely love TICKETEEBOO. So, why are we selling her? Well, we’ve been sailing since 9/11, 2001 (a very easy to remember date). We took delivery of our first (42ft/new) yacht in 2004 and sailed her from Scotland to the Mediterranean the following year. In 2006 we went on board an Oyster and liked what we saw. We sold our yacht and bought a new 50′. We thought we liked her until we were introduced to the Discovery 55 (there’s marketing for you!). At the London Boat Show we liked the Oyster 56. However, within an hour or so when we sampled the Discovery 55, this was always going to be our next yacht. As it has worked out, we have owned our adorable sailing yacht for the last 14 years. We will certainly be sad to see her move into new ownership, although we have many happy memories sailing her and visiting bays that most people will never have the same opportunity to enjoy.

The Discovery 55 Mkll is a result of evolution, rather than revolutionary changes. The original boat, designed at the end of the 1990s, was the product of two years of research with the aim of producing a superlative blue water cruising yacht that could easily be handled by a couple.
