YACHT EXPRESS

In May 2007 DYT christened/launched the newest addition to the fleet, the flagship Yacht Express. The vessel was constructed at the Yantai Raffles Shipyard in Yantai, Province of Shandong, China.

The new ship, which is the largest of its kind in the world (130ft longer than the previous biggest carrier), was built with a semi-submersible dock bay which can accept yachts of any class.

The new vessel is 209m long, 32.20m wide, 8.5m deep with a draft of 5.8m. The submerged draft is 14m, the deck length is 165m, the deck width is 31m, the deck space is 5,115m² and the weight is 15,000t (with a carrying capacity of 5,000t).

The vessel class is 1A1 General Cargo Carrier DK(+) PWDK. The propulsion system of the vessel has two azimuth thrusters with a combined power of 10,200kW.

The Yacht Express will run on regularly scheduled trips between Florida and the Mediterranean. The ship has a service speed of 18kt, which means that the transatlantic voyage takes between eight and 15 days, 50% faster than previously.

Following its launch, the Yacht Express was used in the southern oceans around Australia and New Zealand before travelling to its base in Florida. It travelled across the Atlantic to make a special inaugural appearance at the Monaco Yacht Show in September 2007, where it was re-christened.

The loading process involves the carrier taking on ballast water until the main deck is submerged to a critical depth that allows the yachts to sail aboard. When all the yachts are loaded, divers are dispatched to attach temporary supports to keep the boats elevated as the ballast is released. The ballast water is then pumped out, bringing the carrier back above the waterline.

When the carrier deck is dry, the yachts are then welded to specially designed seaworthy fastenings to maintain them safely for transportation.

The ship features complimentary cabins for the ride-aboard crew of the yachts being transported. There is also a swimming pool, restaurant, cinema and conference, media and fitness facilities.

ENVIRONMENTAL CONSIDERATIONS

The Yacht Express is outfitted with the latest technology for monitoring weather patterns and conditions on the high seas. The system installed in conjunction with the International SeaKeepers Society is the modular SeaKeeper 1000 ocean and meteorological monitoring system.

The SeaKeeper 1000 is installed as a fully automated unit that can sample, measure, record and transmit the critical measures of ocean health-salinity, temperature, oxygen and pollution to various scientific bodies across the world.

A 120-foot former US Navy vessel abandoned on SC coast. Here’s what’s being done about it

A video screen grab shows two vessels, one of which is a 120-foot-long former Navy mine sweeper, parked on Bohicket Creek, S.C.

A video screen grab shows two vessels, one of which is a 120-foot-long former Navy mine sweeper, parked on Bohicket Creek, S.C. (YouTube)

(Tribune News Service) — It’s not particularly unusual to find abandoned boats along South Carolina’s coast, but then there’s the one on Bohicket Creek near Seabrook Island — a 120-foot long, welded steel former Navy mine sweeper stuck in seagrass and pluff mud.

Beside it is a 30-foot cabin cruiser, both owned by the same man, authorities say, who has been unreachable for more than the year the boats have been in the creek, not too far from the North Edisto River.

So far, the boats are not leaching chemicals or fuel into the waterway, according to a test done by an agency associated with the National Oceanographic and Atmospheric Administration. The March 2023 tests done at the request of the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources said no contamination was found.

“It could be an ecological disaster. It wouldn’t take much,” said Andrew Wunderley, executive director of Charleston Waterkeeper, a nonprofit founded in 2009 to protect Charleston’s waterways.

The Navy ship was sold by the General Services Administration March 12, 2021 for $81,600, Mary Simms, GSA’s regional public affairs officer said. She said the agency does not reveal buyer’s names.

The Coast Guard has been aware of the vessel being in South Carolina waters since 2021. Lt. Michael Allen said, and it is checked periodically.

He said if contaminants are found the Coast Guard would take emergency remediation.

“The owner has made minimal effort to comply with orders from the Coast Guard and has received fines,” Allen said.

The owner purchased the Navy vessel, then known as 120TR841, from the General Services Administration at a federal auction in March 2021, Allen said.

It was built by Wisconsin-based Marinette Marine in 1986.

Now called HAZAR, the vessel was not allowed by the Coast Guard to be operated because it did not have federal documentation, which is required because the vessel is too large to be issued a Certificate of Number by the state, Allen said.

The owner still has not obtained federal documentation, he said.

The challenge in getting the boats out of the creek is that no federal or state entity has sole legal authority to fully resolve this situation by itself, Allen said.

The Coast Guard has been working closely with representatives from Natural Resources and the South Carolina Department of Environmental Services to figure out what to do.

Laura Renwick of Environmental Services said the Bureau of Coastal Management began tracking the vessel in December 2022. Mail sent to the owner has been returned.

Allen said derelict and abandoned vessels are an issue in nearly all waters of the United States and fall primarily to local governments to handle them. There are so many no one interviewed was willing to hazard a guess.

Renwick said the state launched a pilot program, called Vessel Turn-in Program, this past spring. They received 65 applications from boat owners and is gathering information before holding a turn-in event in late summer or early fall.

“We’ve also contracted with two third-party companies and are working to finalize the details for the transport, processing, and disposal of the vessels,” she said.

Wunderley said most abandoned boats in the Charleston area are sailboats and typically end up ditched along the coast because the owner has run out of money to maintain them or they are at the end of their life span.

Several Charleston area cities, such as Folly Beach and Mount Pleasant, have active programs to tag abandoned boats and get them out of the water.

The challenge is in outlying areas of the watershed where boats are better hidden.

But there’s no hiding a 120-foot Navy ship. It can be seen from Cherry Point Public Boat Landing on Wadmalaw Island and from Seabrook Island.

Allen said the situation can be remedied in a number of ways, including getting the owner to remove it. He could obtain the Certificate of Documentation.

“The Coast Guard has made it clear to the owner on multiple occasions that we would work with them to authorize limited vessel movement, with conditions, to ensure safety, security and environmental stewardship in the Port,” Allen said.

The Coast Guard could remove the environmental contamination, but it must be shown there is an immediate threat of pollution. The remediation would be done on site.

“If it is necessary to move the vessel to safely mitigate a pollution threat, this movement would have to be coordinated with the state,” Allen said. “In short, where do we move the vessel to? This would have to be known and coordinated with the state, a private property owner, or involved shipyard.”

Wunderly said a scrapyard is the best place for the vessel.

“There should be some scrap value to it,” he said.

Egyptian vessel detained at Odisha's Paradip port

A view of the Paradip Port in Odisha

PARADIP: Civil judge (senior division) Kujang, appointed as marshal for the execution of a warrants of arrest, detained an Egypt-based vessel MV Wadi Albostan at Paradip port, following a directive by the Orissa High Court.

The vessel was detained on Thursday in the presence of local police. Sources said MV Wadi Albostan arrived at Paradip port on August 6 to transport 55,000 metric tonne of iron ore to China. The detention stems from a dispute between Elboil GmbH, a trading company, and the vessel’s owner over low-sulphur marine gas oil.

Elboil GmbH had filed an admiralty suit in the Orissa High Court, seeking a claim of USD 477,326.86 (equivalent to Rs 3,96,129.40) for supply of 98.599 metric tonne of very low sulphur fuel oil, a claim covered under section 4 of the Admiralty (Jurisdiction and Settlement of Maritime Claims) Act, 2017. Based on prima facie evidence, the high court deemed the claim maintainable under the jurisdiction of the admiralty. The court found sufficient grounds for the detention of MV Wadi Albostan, noting without such an order, the plaintiff’s case could be jeopardised, as the vessel was likely to depart soon.

On Wednesday, Admiralty judge Justice V Narasingh of the high court ordered the detention of the vessel and appointed civil judge (senior division) Kujang as the Marshal to execute it. The court also directed the marshal to report the detention to the registrar (judicial) of the high court within seven days. Paradip Port Authority was also instructed to assist in the arrest, with the high court’s order being communicated to its secretary and traffic manager along with the SP and IIC of Paradip Marine police station for further action.

SP Rahul PR confirmed the detention, stating, “By the direction of the Orissa High Court, the civil judge (senior division) Kujang, acting as marshal, detained the vessel on Thursday in the presence of local police.”

Steve Jobs' mega yacht bashed a billionaire's boat in Italy

Steve Jobs' Venus hits another yacht [Instagram/Ricardo Salinas Pliego]

Last updated 1 week ago

A pair of luxury yachts came into contact with each other off the coast of Naples, Italy on Wednesday. The at-sea incident saw Venus , a luxury yacht build for the late Steve Jobs impact that of Mexican retail and broadcasting giant Ricardo Salinas Pliego.

Salinas posted to Instagram a video of Venus drifting toward and into the side of the Lady Moura , his own super-sized yacht. Traveling at a luxuriously slow pace, the front bow of Venus made contact side-on with the other craft, reports Forbes .

After the impact, Venus was shown to bounce and drift backward, wafting away from the Lady Moura .

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Don Ricardo Salinas Pliego (@ricardosalinas)

The video seemingly demonstrates that the crew of Venus failed to intervene quickly enough to avoid the collision, despite Salinas' crew using horns and shouting at the opposing crew.

"I would like to know what the captain and crew were doing that they didn't see a yacht the size of mine," Salinas commented with the video. "You see that there are no shortage of idiots in the world."

Salinas wasn't on the Lady Moura , with the 344-foot yacht anchored in place. Laurene Powell Jobs wasn't aboard Venus either.

While the glacial-speed impact didn't cause any serious damage to either boat, Salinas claims there is a "big scratch" on the side of his vessel. Since it's a big boat made for someone worth about $10 billion, the scratch will apparently cost a lot to repair.

Seemingly jokingly, Salinas asked his followers to buy Apple products via the Group Elektra retail chain that he owns, so Powell Jobs could pay for the damage.

It's likely that Powell Jobs, worth $14.4 billion, could probably afford the repair bill without needing some retail assistance if the insurance doesn't cover it.

Somebody is going to be dusting off and updating their resume.

" Salinas asked his followers to buy Apple products via the Group Elektra retail chain that he owns, so Powell Jobs could pay for the damage." 😆

Why does this amuse me? “Excuse me, do you have any Grey Poupon?” “Why of cour… TOO CLOSE! TOO CLOSE!!”

My guess is the boat captain was a little busy getting a happy ending somewhere not in the wheelhouse.
