Description:
A fairytale that started in The Kingdom of Denmark in 1965! The beautiful motor yacht SKAT belongs to Charles Simonyi, US-Hungarian computer millionaire and Cosmonaut (space tourist). Charles Simonyi is originally from Hungary, which at the time (The Cold War) was behind the Iron Curtain. He got out and came to Denmark as a fugitive at the age17 owning “absolute nothing”, and started working as a talented young man in Copenhagen for the Danish computer company "Regnecentralen". Charles had a Danish girlfriend who called him SKAT or "sweetheart" in English. The name of the yacht is believed to come from this young love. Years later (1980) Charles came to Microsoft in the U.S. (hired as number 40 in the company) and many of you have bin working with the computer software "Word" and "Excel". Charles Simonyi, became a millionaire because of his leading role in developing "Word" and "Excel" for Microsoft. Today he owns his own business. Charles has many friends from his youth time in Denmark and he visits each year Danish waters and ports with his beautiful yacht SKAT. It is said that friends who visit the yacht, regardless of their status, are asked to take off their shoes before boarding SKAT. Visit to Aarhus harbour, Denmark. Own helicopter on board. What a beautiful privilege!

The boats collided in the area of Grape Island off Weymouth, an island in the Hingham Bay area of the Boston Harbor Islands National Recreation Area, according to Hingham Firefighters Local 238.
“There has been a boat collision in the vicinity of Grape Island with serious injuries and a sinking vessel,” the department wrote in a Facebook post.
It wasn’t immediately clear how many people were hurt.
Video captured by a Boston 25 News photographer showed the vessel gradually sinking as emergency response boats flocked to the scene of the wreck.
There were no additional details immediately available.
The cause of the collision is under investigation.

A video screen grab shows two vessels, one of which is a 120-foot-long former Navy mine sweeper, parked on Bohicket Creek, S.C. (YouTube)
(Tribune News Service) — It’s not particularly unusual to find abandoned boats along South Carolina’s coast, but then there’s the one on Bohicket Creek near Seabrook Island — a 120-foot long, welded steel former Navy mine sweeper stuck in seagrass and pluff mud.
Beside it is a 30-foot cabin cruiser, both owned by the same man, authorities say, who has been unreachable for more than the year the boats have been in the creek, not too far from the North Edisto River.
So far, the boats are not leaching chemicals or fuel into the waterway, according to a test done by an agency associated with the National Oceanographic and Atmospheric Administration. The March 2023 tests done at the request of the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources said no contamination was found.
“It could be an ecological disaster. It wouldn’t take much,” said Andrew Wunderley, executive director of Charleston Waterkeeper, a nonprofit founded in 2009 to protect Charleston’s waterways.
The Navy ship was sold by the General Services Administration March 12, 2021 for $81,600, Mary Simms, GSA’s regional public affairs officer said. She said the agency does not reveal buyer’s names.
The Coast Guard has been aware of the vessel being in South Carolina waters since 2021. Lt. Michael Allen said, and it is checked periodically.
He said if contaminants are found the Coast Guard would take emergency remediation.
“The owner has made minimal effort to comply with orders from the Coast Guard and has received fines,” Allen said.
The owner purchased the Navy vessel, then known as 120TR841, from the General Services Administration at a federal auction in March 2021, Allen said.
It was built by Wisconsin-based Marinette Marine in 1986.
Now called HAZAR, the vessel was not allowed by the Coast Guard to be operated because it did not have federal documentation, which is required because the vessel is too large to be issued a Certificate of Number by the state, Allen said.
The owner still has not obtained federal documentation, he said.
The challenge in getting the boats out of the creek is that no federal or state entity has sole legal authority to fully resolve this situation by itself, Allen said.
The Coast Guard has been working closely with representatives from Natural Resources and the South Carolina Department of Environmental Services to figure out what to do.
Laura Renwick of Environmental Services said the Bureau of Coastal Management began tracking the vessel in December 2022. Mail sent to the owner has been returned.
Allen said derelict and abandoned vessels are an issue in nearly all waters of the United States and fall primarily to local governments to handle them. There are so many no one interviewed was willing to hazard a guess.
Renwick said the state launched a pilot program, called Vessel Turn-in Program, this past spring. They received 65 applications from boat owners and is gathering information before holding a turn-in event in late summer or early fall.
“We’ve also contracted with two third-party companies and are working to finalize the details for the transport, processing, and disposal of the vessels,” she said.
Wunderley said most abandoned boats in the Charleston area are sailboats and typically end up ditched along the coast because the owner has run out of money to maintain them or they are at the end of their life span.
Several Charleston area cities, such as Folly Beach and Mount Pleasant, have active programs to tag abandoned boats and get them out of the water.
The challenge is in outlying areas of the watershed where boats are better hidden.
But there’s no hiding a 120-foot Navy ship. It can be seen from Cherry Point Public Boat Landing on Wadmalaw Island and from Seabrook Island.
Allen said the situation can be remedied in a number of ways, including getting the owner to remove it. He could obtain the Certificate of Documentation.
“The Coast Guard has made it clear to the owner on multiple occasions that we would work with them to authorize limited vessel movement, with conditions, to ensure safety, security and environmental stewardship in the Port,” Allen said.
The Coast Guard could remove the environmental contamination, but it must be shown there is an immediate threat of pollution. The remediation would be done on site.
“If it is necessary to move the vessel to safely mitigate a pollution threat, this movement would have to be coordinated with the state,” Allen said. “In short, where do we move the vessel to? This would have to be known and coordinated with the state, a private property owner, or involved shipyard.”
Wunderly said a scrapyard is the best place for the vessel.
“There should be some scrap value to it,” he said.

Parent was arrested after bringing a firearm into columbia high school, sheriff says.
Requires vessel owner to pay up to $854 million in damages.
WASHINGTON, DC —Today, U.S. Representative John Garamendi (D-CA-08) introduced the “Justice for Victims of Foreign Vessel Accidents Act” ( H.R.9348 ) with U.S. Representative Hank Johnson (D-GA-04). A longtime leader on maritime issues in Congress, Garamendi was also elected as California’s Insurance Commissioner from 1991 to 1995 and again from 2003 to 2007.
“If the foreign owners of the cargo vessel that took down the Francis Scott Key Bridge in Baltimore think they can leave American taxpayers holding the bag, I have a message for them: you broke it, you bought it. Access to America’s ports and our consumers is a privilege, not a right. If the foreign owners of the Dalia want to keep that privilege, they can break out their checkbooks, call their insurance company, and pay their fair share of the bridge replacement costs and compensation to the families of the six workers who died tragically that day. In the meantime, I support the Maryland Delegation and President Biden’s ongoing work to rebuild the bridge with federal funding as quickly and safely as possible,” said Congressman John Garamendi (D-CA-08).
“This is a crucial step toward ensuring accountability in maritime liability,” said Rep. Johnson (D-GA-04) . “By enhancing the financial responsibilities of foreign vessel owners, this bill provides essential support to victims and their families in reinforcing our resolve to uphold justice following tragic maritime incidents.”
“The families of the innocent victims of the Baltimore Key Bridge collapse strongly support the Justice for Victims of Foreign Vessel Accidents Act. This legislation protects all Americans from having their lives shattered by corporate vessels from foreign countries due to preventable failures. This issue is not about whether you are a Democrat or a Republican; it is about whether you love and want to protect Americans. That is why both parties should support this bill and help protect our country when foreign vessels are involved,” said L. Chris Stewart and Justin Miller of Stewart, Miller Simmons Trial Attorneys; Dan Rose and Kevin Mahoney of Kreindler & Kreindler; and Craig Sico of Sico Law Group, attorneys for the victims of the Key Bridge disaster.
Current law enacted in 1851 allows vessel owners to file petitions in federal court limiting their legal liability for damages to the dollar value of the vessel and its cargo, minus expenses. Less than a week after the vessel collided with the Francis Scott Key Bridge, the Dalia’s Singapore-based corporate owner and vessel manager filed jointly in the U.S. District Court for Maryland to limit their total liability for the bridge collapse and recovery effort to just $43.7 million, valuing the vessel at $90 million.
The “Justice for Victims of Foreign Vessel Accidents Act” (H.R.9348) would:

Physical map illustrates the mountains, lowlands, oceans, lakes and rivers and other physical landscape features of Kuban'. Differences in land elevations relative to the sea level are represented by color.
Green color represents lower elevations, orange or brown indicate higher elevations, shades of grey are used for the highest mountain ranges in the world. Underwater topography is represented by blues. Darker blues are used for the deepest water, lighter shades of blue represent shallower water such as the continental shelf.
A map projection is a way how to transform points on a Earth to points on a map. This map of Kuban' uses Plate Carree projection. The Plate Carree projection is a simple cylindrical projection originated in the ancient times. It has straight and equally spaced meridians and parallels that meet at right angles.
All projections from a sphere to a plane are distorted. The drawback of the Plate Carree projection is that it doesn't make an attempt to compensate for these distortions. For the general view of Kuban', this is not a significant problem. The detailed maps use the Mercator projection which preserves the shape of small areas better.
