The Oilers clawed their way back into the tournament with three straight wins between Games 4 and 6, but Florida regrouped and pulled together for the 2-1 victory to win it all on Monday night. Carter Verhaeghe and Sam Reinhart both scored for Florida, and Bobrovsky had crucial saves to keep Florida ahead.
Here’s a recent AP story about the Stanley Cup Championship.
SUNRISE, Fla. (AP) — Connor McDavid won the Conn Smythe Trophy as playoff MVP on Monday night despite Edmonton’s Stanley Cup Final loss to Florida, a nod to one of the greatest postseason performances in NHL history.
McDavid, who was held without a point in Game 7 on Monday night, led all scorers with 42 points, five shy of the record of 47 set by Wayne Gretzky in 1985.
“It’s incredible,” teammate Dylan Holloway said before the game. “There’s no shortage of words. He’s just so awesome. He brings it every single day, and when we need him the most that’s when he plays the best. He’s obviously a really special player and a special guy, too.”
After not scoring (but still leading the team with three assists) through the first three games against Florida, McDavid changed the course of the series by doing something no other player in history has done, including Gretzky. He had four points in consecutive games in the final to keep the Oilers from being eliminated.
Panthers forward Nick Cousins said McDavid was “playing on a different level.”
“I didn’t think it was possible for him to elevate his game, but he has,” Cousins said.
McDavid is just the second skater after the Flyers’ Reggie Leach in 1976 to win the Conn Smythe on a team that lost in the final. Goaltenders Jean-Sebastien Giguere of Anaheim in 2003, Ron Hextall of Philadelphia in 1987, Glenn Hall of St. Louis in 1968 and Roger Crozier with Detroit in 1966 were also playoff MVPs after backstopping teams that fell just short of hoisting the Cup.
McDavid, the reigning and three time Hart Trophy winner long considered the best hockey player in the world, put on a show in his first trip to the final. His goal and three assists in an 8-1 rout in Game 4 avoided a sweep, and his four points including an empty netter in Game 5 three nights later dragged the series back to Alberta.
Those who know McDavid believe it’s the year-round work he has put in throughout his career allowed him to thrive when the spotlight was at its brightest.
“He’s unique in his dedication to his craft,” said Hall of Famer Ken Hitchcock, who coached McDavid in 2018-19. “He’s very unique. He’s learned to be relentless, and he enjoys it and he’s very, very serious about his craft, and that becomes contagious when you’re on the team with him.”
Oilers players lauded McDavid not just for leading by example with his play but also off the ice.
“He gives me a ton of confidence no matter what happens in the game, goaltender Stuart Skinner said while sitting next to McDavid, who turned bright red listening. “Whether I let in five, whether I get a shutout. He’s always in my corner, he’s always patting me on the back and telling me that he believes in me. ... I could talk about him for a very long time.”
That talk is justified for a player who led the league in scoring five times during the regular season and accomplished just about everything on an individual basis. What is still missing in the Stanley Cup, which will have to wait at least another year.

Players from the Edmonton Oilers and Florida Panthers in action during the Stanley Cup Finals, gearing up for the decisive Game 7 where a high-scoring outcome is anticipated based on advanced simulations. AP
The Stanley Cup Finals continues on Monday, June 24, 2024, with Game 7 between the Florida Panthers and Edmonton Oilers at 8 p.m. ET at Amerant Bank Arena in Sunrise, Florida.
If you want to purchase tickets, you can do so at Stubhub , Ticketmaster , Ticketsmarter and Vivid Seats .
Here’s a recent NHL story from the AP:
Which captain will be handed the Stanley Cup after Game 7 remains an open question.
It appears far more certain who will get the Conn Smythe Trophy as playoff MVP no matter if the Edmonton Oilers or Florida Panthers win the title Monday night.
Edmonton’s Connor McDavid is an overwhelming favorite to win the award, according to BetMGM Sportsbook , with minus-3000 odds, which equates to an implied probability of more than 96%. Florida’s Aleksander Barkov is next highest at plus-1400 with no other player listed with odds better than a extreme long shot at plus-10,000.
McDavid has already set a playoff record with 34 assists this postseason and his 42 points rank fourth best, trailing only two playoff runs by Wayne Gretzky (47 points in 1986 and 43 in 1988) and one by Mario Lemieux (44 in 1991).
McDavid became the first player ever to post back-to-back games of at least four points in the Stanley Cup Final to help Edmonton rally from 3-0 down to win Games 4 and 5.
Winning the Conn Smythe without winning the Cup, if it comes to that, is not unprecedented. Five players on losing teams have won the trophy since it was first awarded in 1965: Jean-Sebastien Giguere (2003 Mighty Ducks), Ron Hextall (1987 Flyers), Reggie Leach (1976 Flyers), Glenn Hall (1968 Blues) and Roger Crozier (1966 Red Wings).
The postseason MVP going to a non-champion is much more common on hockey, which hands the Conn Smythe to the MVP of the entire playoffs instead of just the final round as is done in the NFL, NBA and Major League Baseball.
It has happened once in the championship rounds in those three leagues.
Here’s a look at the losing team playoff MVPs:
The Red Wings got into the playoffs in 1966 as the fourth seed in a six-team league but upset top-seeded Chicago in the first round thanks to Crozier allowing only six goals in the four wins.
Detroit then led Montreal two games to one in the Cup final before Crozier left Game 4 early with an injury. The Red Wings lost that game to tie the series. Crozier returned for the final two games but wasn’t sharp. The Canadiens won in six, but Crozier still got the MVP.
The 1968 playoffs were the first since the NHL expanded from six teams to 12. Hall dominated the expansion half of the bracket by leading the Blues to seven-game wins over Philadelphia and Minnesota, stopping 70 of 72 shots in those two clinchers.
Hall kept St. Louis close to the established Canadiens in the Cup final that featured four one-goal games and two that went to overtime. Hall stopped 140 of 151 shots in the four-game sweep by Montreal.
The Philadelphia forward is the only skater to win the award thanks to a remarkable scoring run throughout the postseason with a record 19 goals and five assists in 16 games.
He scored five goals in the semifinal clincher against Boston. He then scored four goals in four games of the Cup final against Montreal but the Canadiens still swept the series.
Jari Kurri tied his mark with 19 goals in 1985 but no one has surpassed it.
The Flyers rookie went 15-11 with a .908 save percentage that postseason and nearly led Philadelphia over Gretzky and the high-powered Oilers in the Cup final.
He stopped 61 of 66 shots against one of the most dynamic teams in NHL history to get wins in Games 5 and 6. He stopped 40 more shots in game 7 but the Flyers ended up on the short end of a 3-1 score.
The Ducks entered the playoffs that season as the seventh seed in the West but made it all the way to Game 7 of the Stanley Cup Final thanks in large part to their goalie.
Giguere set the tone by stopping 63 of 64 shots in a triple-overtime win over Detroit to open the postseason. He then shut out Dallas once in the second round and had shutouts in the first three games of the conference final against Minnesota.
He added a fifth shutout against New Jersey in Game 4 of the final to improve to 7-0 in overtime that postseason. But he lost 3-0 in Game 7 and got the trophy in an awkward on-ice ceremony in New Jersey in front of the celebrating Devils fans.
Chuck Howley, Cowboys, Super Bowl 5
The Dallas linebacker nearly did it all in the team’s first Super Bowl appearance, intercepting two passes and forcing a fumble against the Baltimore Colts.
Howley ended up on the short end of the score when Jim O’Brien kicked a 32-yard field goal with 5 seconds left to give the Colts a 16-13 win in the title game following the 1970 season.
Jerry West, 1969 Lakers
The NBA first handed out a Finals MVP in 1969 and the brilliant West was a worthy winner in a losing cause. He scored 53 points in a Game 1 win against Boston and barely slowed down after that.
West averaged 37.9 points per game in the series — fifth most ever in a Finals — and topped 40 points four times in all in the seven games. He scored 42 points in Game 7 but came up on the losing end in a 108-106 game, marking the sixth time his Lakers lost to the Celtics in the Finals.
Bobby Richardson, 1960 Yankees
The Yankees dominated the Pirates on the scoreboard, outscoring Pittsburgh 55-27 over seven games but ended up on the losing end when Bill Mazeroski hit a series-ending homer off Ralph Terry in a 10-9 win to clinch it.
But it was New York’s second baseman who ended up with the MVP after batting .367 with one homer, five extra-base hits and a record 12 RBIs in the seven games.

As the Kansas City Royals reach the halfway point of the season, their record stands at 43-37, a significant improvement from previous years. This progress, while promising, presents a dilemma as the trade deadline approaches. Should the Royals make aggressive moves to push for a postseason berth, or should they take a more cautious approach to sustain their progress without compromising their future?
The latter option seems the wiser path.
In recent years, the Royals have found themselves in dire straits by midseason. In 2023, they were a dismal 23-58 at the halfway point and didn’t fare much better in the second half. The previous years were similarly bleak: 30-51 in 2022, 34-47 in 2021, and the list goes on. This year, however, the Royals are above .500 at the midpoint, a milestone worth celebrating. But let's not get carried away just yet.
General Manager J.J. Picollo faces a tough decision. The Royals lack a pipeline of immediate talent, meaning they need to buy talent to stay competitive. However, they must tread carefully: trading away too much talent in a potentially competitive year risks compromising their current strength. At the same time, Picollo must avoid mortgaging the farm for uncertain returns, lest past mistakes haunt the team once more. It's a high-stakes balancing act that demands prudent decision-making to secure both short-term success and long-term stability.
The Royals’ chance of winning the World Series stands at a mere 0.9%. Yes, you read that right—0.9%. With such slim odds, making drastic moves at the trade deadline seems like a gamble not worth taking. The objective of every MLB season is to win the World Series, and risking the future for a slim shot this year doesn't align with that goal. Currently, Kansas City sits nine games back of the division-leading Guardians (50-26), languishing in third place. Additionally, they find themselves on the outside looking in for the Wild Card, trailing behind the Orioles (49-29), Twins (43-35), and Red Sox (43-36).
Kansas City has some glaring weaknesses. Their bullpen needs a boost (5.31 ERA over the past 14 days) and their outfield lacks true continuity. These areas need addressing, but not at the cost of depleting the farm system. The Royals should look for value-added trades, similar to how they acquired players like Velazquez, McArthur, and Schreiber. Despite struggling lately, both Velazquez and McArthur have been significant contributors at the major league level, and when on, are great additions—without significant cost. While aiming for more impactful acquisitions this time, these are the type of calculated moves that should be pursued.
Picollo has expressed a desire to be aggressive at the deadline but also recognizes the importance of long-term goals.
"I like to think that we’re just getting into a window where we’re going to have a nice handful of seasons,” Picollo said in an interview with MLB Network on Sunday. “So how far do we want to push this thing is something that we have to answer as a front office. But I will say that I feel an obligation personally to the guys that committed to this team and chose Kansas City... So we will be aggressive, and we’ll look at anything and everything.”
For proponents of the "all-in, win-now" mentality, it may be challenging to accept, but this balanced approach is crucial for the Royals to enhance their roster while safeguarding their future assets.
Kansas City has the option to hold steady at the trade deadline—no major buying or selling. They can stick with their current roster and aim for a wild card spot without depleting their farm system. A conservative approach as moderate buyers, willing to take on salary, could be the key.
Holding relatively steady at the trade deadline could also send a positive message to players like Bobby Witt Jr. and future free agents. Dismantling a team that is in contention for a postseason berth could hurt team morale and future recruitment. By maintaining their current roster and making strategic, smaller moves, the Royals can show their commitment to building a competitive team over the long term.
There’s also the political angle to consider. With a new stadium deal on the horizon, ownership is likely considering how a playoff team could energize the local fan base and support initiatives like a sales tax for the new stadium. While this might tempt the Royals to make bold moves, they must balance this with the need to maintain a sustainable and competitive team for the future.
Their significant progress this season is a foundation to build upon, not a reason to make drastic, short-sighted decisions. By focusing on marginal improvements and preserving their farm system, the Royals can continue their upward trajectory and position themselves for sustained success. The goal should be to keep and continue building a reliable supporting cast around key players like Witt Jr. and to rebuild the farm system, starting with the No. 6 pick in July's 2024 MLB Draft, ensuring that the team remains competitive for years to come.
So Royals fans, enjoy the ride this season. Who knows where it could take you? For now, celebrate the progress and look forward to a bright future. After all, Rome wasn’t built in a day, and neither is a championship baseball team.

*PS5 Preview will start to roll out at 9:30am Pacific Time / 18:30pm CET. Please note that it may take a few hours for you to see it enabled on your device.
We believe that Minecraft is better when more friends can play together, however they want, on whichever device they like. We even welcome players who like to dig straight down into the nearest lava block!
