Used Viking 42 Convertible For Sale

Viking’s 42 Convertible is a nice-sized sportfish yacht for anyone wishing to move up to a bluewater capable inboard diesel from a center console. The first Viking Convertible to be powered by the pod propulsion system, the 42C is extremely easy to handle and instantly responsive, whether fishing or cruising. Viking specifically designed and engineered the 42C to optimally run with Cummins QSB diesels and Zeus drives for the several advantages the pod propulsion system offered. Besides the easy joystick control allowing precision handling, spinning on its axis, and easily moving in any direction, making docking easy as child’s play, there are efficiencies gained by having smaller engines positioned further aft under the cockpit, notably fuel efficiency and greater range.

With more space available, Viking built the fuel tank on the hull’s center of gravity for enhanced seakeeping ability. The lighter weight and 42’ length of the vessel was compensated by the hull’s deeper-V shape and 16.7-degree deadrise at transom, keeping the ride soft in head and quartering seas. The additional draft of the V-hull was offset by the pod drives’ shallow running gear, set in protective pockets, and the 42C only draws 3’5” water.

DESCRIPTION

With the engines set closer to the stern, interior space was opened up to allow a roomy two stateroom/two head or optional three stateroom/two head arrangement. The exquisite Viking fit and finish of teak hardwood and veneers, and gracious amenities of the larger Viking Convertible Yachts is evident throughout the 42 Convertible. The standard two stateroom layout features a master stateroom in forepeak with walkaround queen-size berth and private access to starboard head, port side guest stateroom with upper and lower berths, two full heads with separate stall showers, starboard mid-level galley, and main deck salon with raised dinette that seats four. An optional layout for 3 staterooms/2 heads was offered, by carving space from the salon and galley, and moving galley to salon level, opposite the dinette.

The mid-level U-shaped galley, with easy care Amtico flooring, features Corian counters and a breakfast bar with two stools on salon level, for an extra dining area. Galley is well-appointed with undermounted sink, electric two-burner stove, undercounter large capacity refrigerator and freezer, microwave/convection oven, and plenty of storage cabinets and drawers.

In the three-stateroom layout, the galley has a free-standing island with storage instead of the bar with stools. The dinette settee on port side has removable cushions and storage underneath. Dinette table on single through-bolted pedestal has a high gloss finish. Salon features L-shaped lounge with storage underneath and hi-lo cocktail table to starboard, home theater system with 32” HD TV, Bose LS18 stereo with surround sound and subwoofer, cabinetry, window treatments and more for an elegant, comfortable climate-controlled area to relax.

Flybridge features a tournament style center console helm with excellent 360-degree visibility. Raised dash with clear acrylic face keeps electronics safe and dry. Compartments starboard and port of the Palm Beach-style helm house accessory switches and the pod system joystick control. Two Murray ladder back helm seats and lounges to port, starboard and forward provide ample seating for eight. Viking utilized the proven open bridge configuration of the larger Viking convertibles for the 42 Convertible, with a new innovation—a molded fiberglass windshield with distortion-free curved windows.

The 122 sq ft cockpit features an observation mezzanine with hinged seating for stowage below, space for optional freezer, and engine room access. Viking offered refrigeration for the chill box under step to salon. Cockpit is standard set up for offshore fishing and offered plenty of options and upgrades for an owner’s specific style of fishing or cruising. A Palm Beach Towers half tower or full tuna tower could be built and installed for turn-key delivery, along with rocket launchers, outriggers and more. Freezers, fish boxes, livewells, and other fishing amenities could be arranged to order as Viking builds 90% of components in-house.

The 42 Convertible was introduced at a price point under $1million during a recovering economy, yet without compromising the company’s renowned standards of excellence. Although the 42 Convertible is no longer available in Viking’s current line-up, a legacy Viking 42 Convertible may come on the brokerage market. Whether fishing or cruising, the 42 Convertible is a comfortable boat for overnight trips.

Length overall is 42’7” and 46’2” including bow pulpit. Beam overall is 15’10” and draft is 3’7”. Forward freeboard is 5’10” and aft freeboard is 3’1”. Displacement with a standard fuel load is 35,999 lbs. Fuel capacity is 525 gallons, water capacity is 120 gallons, and holding tank is 39 gallons. Height from waterline to top of flybridge hardtop masthead light is 18’7” per 2016 Viking specifications sheet.

This yacht can be easily fitted with a custom-built tuna tower provided by Viking’s very own subsidiary Palm Beach Towers, to turn this vessel into the ultimate fish-finding machine. Though if you choose to rely on piloting from the command deck helm station you will not be disappointed, as it boasts 360-degree visibility through wrap-around windshield windows and an open aspect to the rear. The centrally-located helm sits on a walk-around fiberglass console and features instrumentation installed by Atlantic Marine Electronics. You can expect to find bow thruster and trim tab controls here, along with CMD electric steering attached to a teak helm pod, a Zeus joystick, SmartCraft DTS controls, Icom VHF radio, SkyHook autopilot and Furuno display screens, all sitting across from a trio of Murray or Release Marine helm seats. There is also room in here for a pair of chaise-longues tracing the sides of the command deck, as well as a drinks chiller and integral speakers linked to the yacht’s below-deck home entertainment system.

A few steps back takes you to the Viking 42 Open’s 120-square foot aft-cockpit, where you will find a space engineered around the competitive fishing experience. The cockpit comes with fishing essentials such as a transom door with a lift gate, non-slip fiberglass surfaces, 4 flush-mounted rod holders, insulted fish boxes, a transom livewell, tackle and bait storage, fresh and salt-water wash-down hoses, a cablemaster reel, access to the engine room and a floor plate for a bespoke fighting chair. The cockpit also hosts a mezzanine level with a freezer, a beer chiller and a pair of comfortable Sunbrella sofas, and can be fitted with an optional swimming platform at the transom.

Access to this boat’s lower level is through a water-tight companionway door at the front of the command deck, which leads you down toward a spacious open lobby with a dinette lounge and an open galley. This space impresses with masses of glossy teak surrounds, cherry Amtico flooring, Corian work surfaces and leather furnishings. To port there is an L-shaped dining sofa surrounding a teak-topped breakfast table, while to starboard the C-shaped galley boasts a two-zone electric hob, a microwave-convection oven, a large fridge-freezer unit, plenty of storage and a high-velocity exhaust fan to keep this space feeling fresh even when in the midst of preparing gourmet meals. There is also room down here for a bathroom with a shower, a master stateroom to the bow with a queen-sized bed, and a recessed twin room at the rear.

A pair of 600MHP Cummins QSB Zeus pod-drive engines power the Viking 42 Open to top speeds in excess of 36 knots, with cruising speeds clocking in at around 30 knots. At a more leisurely pace of 8 knots, meanwhile, this yacht has a range of more than 1,000 nautical miles, making it an ideal option for extended fishing or cruising vacations.

ESCAPE is the perfect example of what a pristine cruising yacht should be. She has been meticulously maintained which is clearly evident when the boat is toured. Right down to having the copper tubing for the plumbing waxed and sealed!!!

Having spent most of her life in fresh water and under cover in Tennessee, her finish and bright work show well above average!

ESCAPE has a total of 4 cabins, all with private heads. The master, located aft of the twin engine rooms, gives the owner a sense of privacy and also boasts a king size bed with a private attached room that could be used as a dressing area, office or a combination of both, with loads of storage and closet space. The private head serving the master also has a bathtub. The other three cabins located forward of the engine rooms sleep an additional 6 people in comfort.  The midship VIP has a queen size bed and the two remaining cabins both have twin bunks. Again, all cabins have private head/showers.

When boarding the boat from either the port or starboard side sliding doors you will find yourself in the lower helm area. This can be closed off from the main floor living areas to allow the Captain to operate the vessel without distraction or at night without compromising night vision with light from other areas of the boat.

Moving forward from the lower helm area will take you down one level to an area with a dinette seating area that can be used as an activity center for games or other purposes. The equipment/generators are located directly under this floor with access to the seven Dometic A/C units, two generators (20KW Onan with 2731 hours and the 21KW Phasor with 740 hours on it) as well as the 600 GPD Water Maker with 142 hours. There is also a spare set of fully tuned and polished spare props there as well as generator spare parts. Finally, the first of two forward cabins is also accessed off of this level.

As you proceed forward you will find the last cabin also with double bunks and a private head. Moving aft from the landing level will take you first to the laundry center on the starboard side of the boat and then on to the VIP cabin on the port side of the boat. This cabin has a queen size bed and the head is located across the hall, this also serves as the day head for the boat.

Aft of the VIP cabin are the twin engine rooms housing the spotless Detroit Diesel 12V-71 engines that produce 650HP each. Located outboard at the front of each engine room you will find a thick, plexiglass cover over each of the stabilizer actuators and related sensors. The starboard side engine room houses the hot water tank, ships tool box and common tools mounted on a magnetic bulk head. These rooms are illuminated by both AC and DC lighting systems. You will not find a more organized, cleaner engine room on any Hatteras of this vintage!!  Further aft of the engine rooms takes you to the Master Suite.

On the main level, travelling aft from the lower helm area through a sliding door, will take you into the spacious, bright galley area. This provides ample space for your chef to create meals to be remembered! There is a large, modern double door stainless refrigerator/freezer, microwave oven, 4-burner electric cooktop, dishwasher, and a custom, granite table/seating area.  Aft of the galley, through another door you will enter the dining/salon area. As this is a wide body yacht you will first be in awe of the available space and how it is used! There is a dining table that seats 6, a wet bar with bottle and glass storage, an entertainment center with TV and a very large seating area aft of the dining area.

All furniture in this area is spotless and also movable which will allow you to create and design your ideal set up based on your individual needs. All floors and carpeting through out the vessel are spotless and protected with the use of removable "runners."   Finally aft of the salon, you will pass through another door taking you to the aft deck of the yacht which is protected from the elements by the fully extended flybridge. There is ample room here for several nice chairs that you can then enjoy for morning coffee or sun downers as your day transitions into evening. This is also where you will handle your stern lines and gives direct access to the swim platform.

Moving up the stairs/ladder from the lower helm area takes you to the fly bridge. As you emerge onto this dock you will again be shocked by the amount of space here. There is a very large seating area aft, a space that could service as a dance floor next to the custom port side counter area that sports a built in down-draft electric grill, sink, refrigerator and storage area. At the front of the flybridge are two high-end Lebroc helm seats. Each with multiple controls and levers to allow you to customize the seating surface to fit your body perfectly. Navigation from the flybridge is made possible with two removable 13" iPad Pro tablets that are wirelessly linked to the vessels navigation system. There is also an autopilot control, a proportional hydraulic thruster joystick, new Standard Horizon 1850 VHF radio and B&G Triton 2 digital display unit. This entire area is covered with a new 2-piece Bimini top.

At the aft portion of the fly bridge you will find storage for the water toys. There is a cradle for a personal water craft as well as a 12' Novurania 4-person hard bottom inflatable with steering console powered by a 25HP 4-stroke Yamaha outboard. The davit to service these toys was upgraded in August 2021 with a new 2000LB motor and cable.

Other recent upgrades/Maintenance include:  

February 2024: complete oil and fuel filter service on both mains and generators, new raw water impellers in mains and generators, new batteries in starboard engine room, replace/repack rudder glands, new raw water pump on Phasor generator.  

November 2023: hauled out, bottom inspection (nothing remarkable found), bottom paint, all bottom gear prepped and painted, shafts and cutlass bearings inspected, bow thruster inspected, props were removed and inspected. Electronics Upgrades:

Boat is in great working order. Boat has been serviced every year with records. This boat is turn key ready with no scheduled maintenance. The only repair needed is electric trim tab actuators need to be replaced. Both motors had 10 year service new water pump impeller, both fuel pumps, alternator, spark plugs, oil change and fuel filters. Trailer had a complete rebuild several years ago. I priced this at a very competitive price, boat is in good shape and ready for use with a lot of extras. This is a great family boat with the fully glassed in dry cabin and dry area down below with tons of room, a safe place for the kids to nap or play.
