The Best Riverboat Tours To Take On Your Next Visit To New Orleans

A riverboat in New Orleans

Despite New Orleans (NOLA) being largely known for its Mardi Gras parties, Bourbon Street beverages, beignets, and po'boys, there's so much more to this dynamic city. That's especially true if you see it from the perspective of its neighbor, the mighty Mississippi River. The city's proximity to water is part of how it became such a storied metropolis, so visitors should know how vital these waterways are. What better way to experience that history than by traveling on the river itself?

For the most part, the riverboat tours you take in New Orleans will either be on the Steamboat Natchez or the Creole Queen Paddlewheeler. Both of these paddleboat riverboats are esteemed parts of NOLA's tourist culture and provide a wide range of tour options. There are numerous ways to take on and experience the grand, muddy Mississippi, so let's dive in to our list of your best options.

Creole Queen Historic Cruise

Hop on board the Creole Queen Paddlewheeler, and you can learn all about three centuries of history found in New Orleans. Enjoy the sights along the river as a local historian revels in the city's storied past. You'll hear about how NOLA was founded by the LeMoyne brothers, how the French Quarter area came to be and you'll be reminded of all those details you forgot in school about the Louisiana Purchase.

You'll feel like royalty during a ride on the Creole Queen with its bright red paddlewheel and ivory paint. From the deck, you'll get views of the city and the surrounding areas that you'll never forget. You can even get bottomless mimosas for an additional fee for a slightly more upgraded experience.

This tour option also includes a one-hour excursion and tour of Chalmette Battlefield. There, you will hear from a designated park ranger about exactly what happened on that field. You can bring your lunch on the boat or you can choose to include lunch with your ticket, which would feature options like New Orleans-style shrimp pasta, Creole jambalaya and authentic red beans and rice.

Creole Queen Jazz Brunch

There's nothing like brunch with a view, which is exactly what you'll get if you brunch with the Creole Queen. During this jazz brunch experience (brunch is optional), you can greet the midday in style, including with bottomless mimosas or Bloody Marys in hand, if you wish. For NOLA party-goers, the brunch timing is perfect for a late morning after a long night. The boat doesn't board until 10-11 a.m. on Saturday and Sunday mornings with sailing from 11 a.m. to 12:30 pm.

Here, the jazz band is the star of the show. The sounds of trumpets and horns and unsuspecting melodies pair perfectly with the consistent views from the Mississippi River. You can still learn about the history of the town from this tour, too. A historian will be on board to offer stories and answer questions, helping create this picturesque memory of a fun morning in a history-filled part of America.

Creole Queen Jazz Cruise

You couldn't possibly visit New Orleans without enjoying the sounds of the city's jazz culture at night. The Creole Queen has a nighttime jazz option that can come with dinner or not. From on board this riverboat, you can watch the city light up as the sun sets, followed by views of the city lights and the twinkling sky.

A longer tour than the brunch version, also with a slightly more elevated price point, the nighttime jazz cruise is a romantic exploration of the river. Accompanied by the allure of a jazz band, the cajun seafood pasta will taste like home to even first-time visitors. Like the brunch tour, you do also get some historical narration even with the jazz focus.

This is the tour for the NOLA night owls. Sailing ends at 9 p.m., which means the night is still young enough to explore the city, especially if you plan to bar hop over on Bourbon Street or find some live music to dance the night away.

Steamboat Natchez Spring Fling Option

Technically an add-on to their dinner and lunch cruises, the Spring Fling add-on can elevate a Steamboat Natchez river cruise experience. This package includes the river tour, the lunch or dinner option, a sweet snack, a decorated reserved table, as well as three alcoholic beverages from their special menu. Not to worry, kiddos aren't left out of the fun here — they get unlimited soft drinks or juice.

This deal is only offered, rightly, during the spring to help make spring breaks even more special. Usually, the package is offered by Steamboat Natchez from mid-March through most of May. If you plan on utilizing the cash bar, the package is well worth the price. You can get the Spring Fling option for lunch or dinner cruises as well as the Sunday brunch cruise. Obviously, between the three options the lunch ticket will be the most reasonable price for budget spring breakers while the dinner ticket will be more of a splurge at almost double the cost of lunch.

Steamboat Natchez Dinner Jazz Cruise

Available with or without dinner, this cruise showcases the Mississippi River from dusk until the stars come out to shine. Accompanied by Grammy-nominated Dukes of Dixieland Jazz, guests will also hear the history of NOLA. Like the Creole Queen, the Steamboat Natchez cruises down the river with its vibrant red wheel and charming white paint job. A bright Steamboat Natchez sign is splashed along the side of the boat to ensure you don't accidentally board the wrong paddlewheel boat.

For those who opt for dinner, there are two dinner seatings: the first from 6 p.m. to 7:15 p.m. and the second from 7:45 p.m. to 9 p.m. If you want to watch the sunset glow from the boat's deck, consider doing the second dinner seating. You are welcome to leave your table before the seating time is over. Likewise, if you'd rather see the city shimmering under the stars, you'll want to eat dinner sooner to get back to the deck after sunset.

Steamboat Natchez Sunday Jazz Cruise

For the brunch crowd, the Steamboat Natchez also offers a brunch jazz cruise along the river. Whether or not you indulge in some tasty brunch offerings, you can enjoy the historical narration, a calliope concert, and Duke Heitger's Steamboat Stompers Jazz Trio. A Sunday cruise is a great way to finish a trip to NOLA or start one, especially if you've never been to this fascinating city before.

Some of the tasty brunch foods you can indulge in on this cruise include chicken and sausage gumbo, grits, and pain perdu, which is a sweet treat similar to French toast. There are a wide variety of foods available during brunch to accommodate a range of dietary needs or the pickiest of kiddos.

If you somehow miss live music during a trip to New Orleans, a jazz cruise is an excellent way to fit in some jazz tunes you won't hear in the same way anywhere else. Steamboat Natchez is a great option for music-lovers and first-timers alike.

Steamboat Natchez Daytime Jazz Cruise

Like the Sunday Jazz Cruise, the Steamboat Natchez brings back its calliope concert as well as Duke Heitger's Steamboat Stompers Jazz Trio for daytime adventurers. The difference is that the lunch cruise is only available from Monday-Saturday each week.

An optional lunch is offered on this sightseeing cruise that also includes a narrated history of the city. Like the dinner cruise, there are two seatings during lunch: the first from 11 a.m. to 12 p.m. and the second from 12:15 p.m. to 1:15 p.m. Either way, do not miss the red beans and rice! It's simple but so very tasty. The menu is referred to as "casual," denoting that there are not a lot of foods on offer during the buffet. Even so, there is plenty to make a meal.

Since these cruises take place during the parts of the day when the sun is highest, be careful of the heat. This is particularly important if you're visiting in the summer months because the sun can be brutal on the decks of the boat. Be sure to pack a hat, wear your sunscreen and stay hydrated!

Hop aboard the Canal Street Ferry

New Orleanians know that the best way to see the Mississippi River is aboard the $2 Canal Street to Algiers Ferry. These rides might not be luxe, though you get to enjoy the same sights as the other river boats at a much cheaper cost. For roughly thirty minutes, ferry riders can enjoy the riverfront and make their way to the other side of NOLA.

The ferry has been part of life in NOLA since 1827, so not only would you be saving a lot of money by taking it instead of a cruise, but you'd be experiencing the views as New Orleanians have for almost two centuries! Find the ferry right off Canal Street next to the Aquarium of the Americas.

The Canal Street Ferry runs every day of the week with varying hours. You could take it to Algiers Point and explore the historic neighborhood, visit the Jazz Walk of Fame, or use it as an excuse to find a new lunch spot. Since the ride is only 30 minutes each way you can easily fit it into the busiest NOLA vacation with ease. It's also a great way to still get that river experience without the cruise price tag.

Booze Cruise on The Cajun Queen

This mega-peddle boat can host up to 22 guests. Think of it like a river cruise meets street peddle-bar, the Booze Cruise is an excellent smaller option for folks looking for a good time on the river. Cruising on the Cajun Queen can either be a public or private experience, depending on what you're looking for. Guests also don't have to be 21 to enjoy the ride either, the boat can accommodate riders aged eight and up.

In addition to the peddle boat, you can also rent a pontoon boat for up to a dozen people for a different kind of cruise experience. The pontoon allows guests to bring their drinks as well as snacks and comes with a sound system and coolers with ice for all your BYOB needs. You may not get a full-on narrated history experience, though you could always hire a captain that offers narration. Or maybe you could invite a longtime New Orleanian who likes to spin a good yarn. Either way, you get some much-needed river time and get to experience NOLA from the Mississippi.

  • Dinner Cruises
  • Lunch Cruises
  • Other Cruises
  • Ways to Save
  • Tips from Locals and Travelers

There are two main companies in New Orleans that offer cruise services on the Mississippi River: The Steamboat Natchez and the Paddlewheeler Creole Queen.

Each riverboat provides a dinner buffet-style cruise, lunch cruise, and other services.

At least one of these cruise companies offers cheaper tickets or even free admission through various attraction tourist passes available in the city.

If you’re looking to save money on dinner cruises, lunch cruises, and more, make sure to check our post about New Orleans tourist passes for the best deals.

You do not need to purchase a dinner (or a lunch) to board these vessels.

Alternatively, you can also just buy a small snack on the ship or bring your own snacks onboard.

If you’re much more interested in either a boat tour or a jazz cruise, you can find more details about these less expensive options on our post covering New Orleans Riverboat Cruises .

Taking a riverboat dinner cruise is one of our top 10 things to do at night in NOLA.

What do you wear on a dinner cruise in New Orleans?

On a casual buffet-style dinner cruise, you may dress formally in evening gowns, jewelry, heels, or black suits.

It's recommended not to wear tops, swimwear, or skirts.

What do you wear on a riverboat lunch cruise?

For a riverboat lunch casual dressing is appropriate. You can wear short T-shirts, tops, sneakers, or scandals.

Bright dresses blouses, skirts, and hats go well with a riverboat with a jazz band.

Each company has at least one house band that will perform onboard throughout the trip.

Steamboat Natchez

You can expect to hear the performance of Duke Heitger’s Steamboat Stompers during the cruise length.

The members of this band are noted for their work on various movie soundtracks, television shows, and albums.

At night, the Dukes of Dixieland will also play a variety of wonderful jazz music.

Much like the Steamboat Stompers, this band is also noted for their performances on television shows, most notably the hit HBO series Treme .

While boarding, calliope music will also be performed for approximately 15 minutes.

This music can be heard from the docks.

Creole Queen Paddlewheeler

This company only offers live jazz music on their dinner cruises, but they’ve also got a great band on hand.

The Sullivan Dabney Jr. and the Muzik Jazz Band is known for performing all over NOLA during events such as the French Quarter Festival and the Jazz & Heritage Festival.

This group has become something of a local legend, as they can frequently be seen and heard at various locations throughout the city.

One of the best ways to hear their music is simply to take a dinner cruise on the Paddlwwheeler Creole Queen!

OTHER CRUISES

If you’re not too concerned about getting something to eat while you’re taking a NOLA cruise, there are several dining options to consider.

First and foremost, it’s important to note that each of the lunch and dinner cruises listed above is also available without a meal.

You can also see the city from the water by taking the Algiers Point Ferry across the Mighty Mississippi River.

Alternatively, there are kayak tours through the swamps of Louisiana where you can get a close look at all of the beautiful wildlife in the area.

For more details on all of these opportunities, make sure to read our post about New Orleans Riverboats, Paddleboats and Cruises .

Swamp Tours

If you’re interested in seeing the swamps of Louisiana, there are a few different types of boat tours to consider.

The typical swamp boat tour will take you on a leisurely trip through the swamplands, but there are also airboat tours that are much faster and more exciting.

To learn more about all of these services, read our post about New Orleans Swamp Tours .

WAYS TO SAVE

If you’re looking for a great deal on tickets for either the Steamboat Natchez or the Creole Queen, there are a few options to consider.

In this section, we will provide all the information you need to save money on this activity.

Both their Historic River Cruise and the Dinner Jazz Cruise are included for free with the New Orleans Sightseeing Pass .

You can also take the Historic River Cruise with the New Orleans Pass .

Unfortunately, the tickets offered with these services are only for admission onto the boat and they do not include either lunch or dinner buffet.

Other Ways to Save

If you’re looking for another way to save money on a New Orleans dinner cruise, make sure to check both Living Social and Groupon .

As of the time of this post, each service offers cheaper tickets to both the Creole Queen Paddlewheeler and the Steamboat Natchez.

While other savings and tourist passes are only good for admission, you can actually save money on full dinner/lunch/brunch cruises with either of these services.

Of all the city's attractions , New Orleans' cemeteries are a one-stop shop for learning about family traditions, history, Voodoo, jazz music and burial practices for above-ground tombs. However, some cemeteries, such as St. Louis Cemetery No. 1, require you to join a guided tour to visit. These tours differ from New Orleans' ghost tours , which tell spooky stories of NOLA's legendary spirits and visit haunted spots around the city.

To help you select which tour is right for you, U.S. News created this list of the best New Orleans cemetery tours, informed by both expert and traveler opinion. No matter which outing you choose, you're sure to have a ghoulishly good time.

Cemetery Tours NOLA – The Official Tour of St. Louis Cemetery No. 1

Price: Adults from $25; kids from $18 Duration: 45 minutes

If you want to see the inside of St. Louis Cemetery No. 1, this tour is the only way to walk through the premises (it's not open to the general public). Licensed guides delve into the unique burial customs and above-ground crypts found throughout the famous 18th-century cemetery. Among the tombs you'll spot are those belonging to Voodoo queen Marie Laveau, numerous New Orleans city mayors, as well as Homer Plessy (plaintiff in the United States Supreme Court decision Plessy v. Ferguson). Reviewers appreciate that the cemetery is restricted to guided tours and praise the experienced and humorous guides for their vast knowledge of the cemetery and the city in general.

Tours depart daily every 15 minutes from 9 a.m. to 3:45 p.m. Advance reservations are recommended. Groups are limited to 20 guests per tour.

Trips depart at noon Monday and Friday. There are also private versions of this tour. For even more thrills, check out the company's ghost-hunting tour.

Frequently Asked Questions

Cemetery tours are popular in New Orleans because cemeteries here are unlike most cemeteries in the U.S. Many of the departed are buried above ground in tombs that range from simple to ornate. Plus, these sites are reportedly haunted, making cemeteries all the more popular with ghost hunters.

There are some cemeteries you can visit on your own. Others, such as St. Louis Cemetery No. 1, can only be viewed on an official tour. It's a good idea to find out whether your cemetery requires a tour guide before your visit; call the cemetery or speak with your hotel's concierge.

St. Louis Cemetery No. 1 is the most famous cemetery in the city. In part, this is because of the numerous important figures buried here. It's also the oldest existing cemetery in New Orleans; in fact, people are still laid to rest here each year.

Voodoo practitioner Marie Laveau, activist Homer Plessy, writer Anne Rice and Popeyes founder Al Copeland are just a few of the celebrities buried in the most famous cemeteries in New Orleans. There are other famous individuals (such as politician Huey Long and musician Fats Domino) who are buried in other sites around the city. Actor Nicolas Cage will also be buried here; he has already built a pyramid tomb for himself in St. Louis Cemetery No 1.

Justin Timberlake’s biggest controversies: DWI arrest, Britney Spears’ cheating allegations, Nipplegate and more

What goes around, comes around.

Justin Timberlake has been at the center of multiple controversies throughout his storied career that began when he was a child.

As a teenager, Timberlake had a tumultuous relationship with Britney Spears that made headlines again in 2023 when Spears’ book came out.

His wife, Jessica Biel, with whom he shares sons Silas, 9, and Phineas, 3, has stood by the singer throughout his public issues — even during accusations of cheating .

Most recently, Timberlake was arrested for a DWI in the Hamptons on June 17. He was charged with driving while intoxicated and cited for running a stop sign and failure to keep in his lane.

Here are are Justin Timberlake’s biggest controversies from over the years.

Timberlake and Spears, both “All New Mickey Mouse Club” stars, began dating in 1999 but ultimately ended things in 2002.

After their breakup, Timberlake released his hit song “Cry Me a River,” which insinuated that Spears cheated on him.

Years later, Timberlake supported Spears when she  spoke out in open court for the first time in 2021 about her “abusive”  13-year conservatorship , which has  since ended .

But in 2023, Spears leveled a number of accusations against her ex-boyfriend in her memoir “The Woman in Me,” including that Timberlake was the one who was unfaithful in their relationship.

Spears said that Timberlake cheated with “another celebrity,” but she didn’t reveal the star’s identity because she “now has a family” and Spears “doesn’t want to embarrass” them.

The “Stronger” singer also claimed that  she had an abortion when the exes were together  because Timberlake was reportedly not ready to be a father.

“I loved Justin so much. I always expected us to have a family together one day. This would just be much earlier than I’d anticipated,” wrote Spears. “But Justin definitely wasn’t happy about the pregnancy. He said we weren’t ready to have a baby in our lives, that we were way too young.”

After Spears’ memoir came out, she issued an apology to Timberlake and shouted out his song ‘ Selfish .” In response, Timberlake declared that he  wanted to apologize to “absolutely f–king nobody” during a concert in NYC.

Timberlake was a founding member of *NSYNC with Lance Bass, Joey Fatone, Chris Kirkpatrick and JC Chasez.

In April 2022, the group disbanded partly because Timberlake wanted to be a solo artist.

“We were on a stadium tour, and I just felt like the whole thing was too big,” Timberlake told The Hollywood Reporter in 2017. “It started as a fun snowball fight that was becoming an avalanche. And, also, I was growing out of it.”

“I felt like I cared more about the music than some of the other people in the group. And I felt like I had other music I wanted to make and that I needed to follow my heart,” he added.

Timberlake became a huge independent star after leaving *NSYNC. As of June 2024, he’s dropped six studio albums with hit songs including “Rock Your Body,” “What Goes Around…Comes Around,” “Suit & Tie,” “Mirrors,” and “Can’t Stop the Feeling.” He’s headlined five tours, including the ongoing The Forget Tomorrow World Tour.

The superstar has won 10 Grammys out of 39 nominations.

Timberlake has also starred in movies including “The Social Network,” “Friends with Benefits,” “Wonder Wheel” and “Reptile.” He does voice acting in the “Trolls” movies.

*NSYNC reunited at the 2023 MTV Video Music Awards and at one of Timberlake’s concerts in Los Angeles in March 2024. They also released the song “Better Place” for “Trolls 3” in 2023, marking their first group song in 22 years. They did another song together, “Paradise,” for Timberlake’s 2024 album “Everything I Thought It Was.”

Despite leaving the group, Timberlake has seemingly stayed close with the other *NSYNC members. Bass, 45, even defended Timberlake when he was getting hate after Spears’ memoir came out. Bass told TMZ that Timberlake deserves “forgiveness” for what happened in his relationship with Spears.

“Nipplegate” was the viral incident with Timberlake and Janet Jackson at the 2004 Super Bowl .

Jackson suffered an onstage mishap when Timberlake grabbed her leather top and accidentally exposed her breast in front of 140 million viewers. Timberlake later claimed that the “wardrobe malfunction” was “not intentional and is regrettable.”

The FCC investigated the incident and fined CBS $550,000, but it was later voided by the U.S. Court of Appeals.

The scandal bruised Jackson’s career and her ego, while Timberlake came out of it relatively unscathed.

Jackson’s initial apology for the incident read, “The decision to have a costume reveal at the end of my halftime show performance was made after final rehearsals. MTV was completely unaware of it. It was not my intention that it go as far as it did. I apologize to anyone offended — including the audience, MTV, CBS and the NFL.”

Timberlake’s apology read, “I am sorry if anyone was offended by the wardrobe malfunction during the halftime performance at the Super Bowl. It was not intentional and is regrettable.”

Timberlake later  issued a direct apology to Jackson in 2021, saying that he “failed” the “All for You” singer.

Jackson discussed “Nipplegate” in her 2022 documentary “Janet.”

“Honestly, this whole thing was blown way out of proportion. And, of course, it was an accident that should not have happened, but everyone is looking for someone to blame and that’s got to stop,” she said of the incident.

“Justin and I are very good friends, and we will always be very good friends,” she continued. “We spoke just a few days ago. He and I have moved on, and it’s time for everyone else to do the same.”

In October 2010, Us Weekly reported that Timberlake cheated on his then-girlfriend Biel with Olivia Munn.

A source told the outlet that Timberlake and Munn had a three-day fling after meeting at a MySpace event.

Timberlake’s rep denied the allegations at the time. Munn’s rep never commented on the claims.

Seven years into his marriage with Biel, Timberlake was caught canoodling with his “Palmer” co-star Alisha Wainwright in New Orleans in November 2019.

The Sun obtained exclusive video  and photos of the pair hanging out at the bar. Sources claimed that Timberlake was not wearing his wedding ring and “appeared to have been drinking heavily and was unsteady on his feet.”

Timberlake later apologized for the incident in a now-deleted Instagram post.

“A few weeks ago, I displayed a strong lapse of judgment — but let me be clear — nothing happened between me and my costar,” he said. “I drank way too much that night and I regret my behavior. I should have known better. This is not the example I want to set for my son.”

He continued: “I apologize to my amazing wife and family for putting them through such an embarrassing situation, and I am focused on being the best husband and father I can be. This was not that.”

Biel stayed quiet during the controversy.

A source told PEOPLE at the time that Biel “believes he didn’t cheat on her.” They added, “What’s most important to her in life is her family and being the best mom to Silas. She’ll never break up her family over something like this.”

Wainwright never directly addressed her behavior with Timberlake, but she did praise the Grammy Award winner in an interview with Entertainment Tonight over a year later.

“This guy is a mega star and he’s one of the most recognizable faces. I thought he was incredible in this movie,” she said. “You’d be surprised how someone is in character. You can take away all the noise and just focus on what’s in front of you like, ‘Let’s make a movie.’ “

Timberlake was arrested on DWI charges in the Hamptons early in the morning on June 17.

He was pulled over in Sag Harbor and taken into custody, and was cited for running a stop sign and failure to keep in his lane. The following day, he appeared in court and was released without bail.

Per  Page Six , Timberlake was “with a bunch of friends” at the American Hotel on Main Street before he drove off around 12:30 a.m. The hotel is a 2-minute walk from the local police station and rooms can run up to $625 a night.

Timberlake reportedly told the police that he only had “one martini” and he refused their request to take a breathalyzer test. Sources said the musician appeared glassy-eyed and smelled of alcohol.

“His friends were telling the police, ‘Let him go, let him go,’” an insider told the outlet. The cop who pulled Timberlake over was also reportedly “so young that he didn’t even know” who the star was.

The source added: “He didn’t recognize him or his name.”

“This is going to ruin the tour,” Timberlake allegedly told the officer.

The cop responded, “What tour?”

Timberlake has been on his Forget Tomorrow World Tour since April.

Per court documents, his next court appearance will be July 26, but he does not have to attend in-person. His driver’s license will also be suspended in New York.

Two days before the arrest, Biel celebrated Timberlake with a Father’s Day post via Instagram.

“You’re so many things to so many people. But to us you are THE ROCK. The rock we climb on, we lean against. The rock that shades us from the sun. And when we recline on you, as we always do, hopefully our butts will keep you eternally grounded and warm,” she wrote. “We LOVE YOU 🪨❤️.”

Hours before the scandal, Biel was also photographed filming the upcoming Prime Video thriller series “The Better Sister” in Central Park in New York City.

Bob Mould Announces U.S. Fall Tour With ‘Breathing Room (Live Solo Electric)’

By Emily Zemler

Emily Zemler

Bob Mould will embark on a solo tour in the U.S. in September and October. The musician’s Solo Electric Tour is set to kick off Sept. 6 at Montgomery, New York’s City Winery Hudson Valley and will conclude Oct. 25 at Atlanta’s The Earl.

Mould previewed the trek with the release of a new live recording, “Breathing Room (Live Solo Electric),” which marks his first music since 2020. A press release describes it as “one of many new songs to come.”

“I’m looking forward to bringing even more new material to everyone this fall,” Mould said in a statement. “Generally speaking, the new compositions are brief, catchy, and simplistic in structure. The focus of this writing cycle is memorable pop songs, and I can’t wait to test drive the new work in this stripped down Solo Electric setting!”

2024 Travelers Championship picks: Action Network's outright bets for TPC River Highlands

The PGA Tour heads to TPC River Highlands following an epic U.S. Open , and our golf analysts have their   2024 Travelers Championship Picks  ready.

Our golf betting experts have already peppered the 2024 Travelers Championship outright betting board on Monday, and they have bets for four different golfers to win in Cromwell, Connecticut, including Wyndham Clark and Sahith Theegala in this 72-man field.

Find our favorite   2024 Travelers Championship Picks  for this week's PGA Tour signature event below.

Wyndham Clark 70-1 ( BetRivers )

By Spencer Aguiar I always find these limited-field, no-cut events to be challenging because of how they compress the outright betting board.

My numbers found a ton of intrigue near the top when diving into Xander Schauffele, Ludvig Aberg and Collin Morikawa. Any of those routes would make for an optimal start to a card, but I will kick off my week with two long-shot wagers before adding once the event begins.

If you want additional thoughts on why I am taking this route, you can tune into the Links + Locks Betting Preview   on Tuesday evening.

One of the reasons I liked Wyndham Clark this week is because it feels as if the market has overcorrected itself because of his recent form. I get that the struggles are real throughout different portions of his game, but the American flashed some life at the U.S. Open en route to what became a disastrous final-round 77 to dive down the board.

Clark won't be for the faint of heart since his floor is lower than most will feel comfortable backing, but outright betting is all about shooting for upside, which he displays with par-5 scoring potential and overall birdie-making skills to make a run up this board.

Patrick Cantlay +2200 ( DraftKings )

By Greg Waddell I'm taking a stab at Patrick Cantlay this week after he tied for third at the U.S. Open at Pinehurst No. 2 over the weekend. Cantlay is still looking for his first win in 2024, but given his form this past week, he may not have to wait long.

Cantlay loves TPC River Highlands, as evidenced by his finishes in his last six appearances here – he has finished within the top 15 in six straight seasons, placing in 15th, 15th, 11th, 13th and 13th in successive years before a fourth-place finish in 2023.

Overall, Cantlay has the best average finish at TPC River Highlands out of every golfer in the field this week.

He is second in the field in Strokes Gained: Total in his career at this course at 2.02 strokes gained per round, which falls just short of Xander Schauffele at 2.03. Schauffele is +800 this week, making Cantlay at +2200 one of the best values on the board.

Sahith Theegala 35-1 (Widely Available)

By Matt Gannon After speaking with Theegala's caddie Carl Smith ahead of the event, I quickly realized that Theegala's aggression would be a detriment around Pinehurst. Simply put, golfers who fire at too many pins at Pinehurst No. 2 are in for a long week.

On the other hand, his aggressive nature can surely lead him to success on a Pete Dye golf course like TPC River Highlands where the winning score will likely be lower than -20. That is what Theegala does best, and he has shown it on this course before when he tied for second here in 2022, which was sort of a coming-out party for him.

Theegala's ball-striking has been so much more consistent this season, which has been a major improvement compared to past years. As he gets older, he gets a lot sharper, and this is a great spot for Theegala to pick up his second win.

Viktor Hovland +2200 ( FanDuel )

By Tony Sartori Despite the missed cut at last week’s U.S. Open, Viktor Hovland is trending in the right direction, and I believe we will see him in the winner’s circle once again soon. Yes, Pinehurst No. 2 smacked him around on Thursday, but that course can do that to anybody.

Hovland rebounded with a two-under 68 on Friday, which was one of the lowest rounds of the day. As a result, I think he is already right back in the solid form he displayed before missing the cut on the number. He has been trending in the right direction with a 15th-place finish at the Memorial Tournament and a third-place finish at the PGA Championship.

He has arguably been a top-five iron player on Tour over the past month, and that will reward him sooner rather than later. Last season, each of the top-six finishers at TPC River Highlands ranked in the top 22 among the field in Strokes Gained: Approach the Green, the only statistic in which such a trend occurred.
