Copa Del Rey — Mediterranean regatta with royal charm

The Copa del Rey race is one of the most beautiful and super-competitive sailing regattas in the Mediterranean. The regatta is part of the Grand Slam series. This elite Spanish regatta traditionally gathers professional yachtsmen from all over the Mediterranean on the most modern yachts. The number of participants in the regatta is increasing every year — in 2019, more than 150 crews took part in the regatta. Beginners can take part in the regatta as part of experienced crews.

The regatta was founded in 1982 and is held annually at the Real Club Náutico de Palma yacht club, located in the heart of the bay of Palma de Mallorca. Copa Del Rey is under the patronage of the King of Spain. The king himself and his immediate family also take part in the regatta on equal terms with other crews. So the regatta is really royal!

Each year, elite yachts participate in the regatta: TP 52, GC32, Club Swan 50, Swan 45, Club Swan 42, X-35, J-80, IRC, ORC.

The Royal Yacht Club of the city of Palma organizes an exciting program every evening, so you will have the opportunity to relax and have fun after a competition day.

Copa Del Rey 2024

This is my first time, is this ok?

Beginners without experience can participate in the regatta, since on the yacht there is always a professional skipper with extensive experience who will teach you everything you need for your role on the boat. In addition, as a rule, there are experienced yachtsmen in the crew who will help you get settled and feel comfortable.

What is included and not included in the price?

As a rule, the cost of participation in the regatta includes:.

— accommodation on a yacht for the duration of the regatta;

— bed linen and towels;

— organizational fee;

— skipper services;

— the cost of mooring in marinas;

— basic sailing training;

— a yacht polo or t-shirts from the organizers.

Additional expenses you will need to pay:

— airplane tickets and transfer to the marina;

— a visa. However, we will give you an invitation and confirmation of accommodation booking for the embassy. Visas for sporting events are easy to get;

— personal expenses.

You cannot choose a team?

Events schedule.

The regatta will take place in the bay of Palma on Mallorca.

Palma de Mallorca will be interesting not only for those who like beach vacations. It also has many natural and historical attractions. Mallorca is a place with a mixture of cultures, so here you can find everything from Gothic cathedrals to Arabic-style houses.

The Cathedral of St. Mary is the main cathedral not only of Palma, but of all the Balearic Islands. This is a wonderful example of Gothic architecture. They began to build the cathedral in the 14th century, and in our times, the building was rebuilt several times, and the famous Antonio Gaudi worked on the interior.

Bellver Castle is a few kilometers from Palma. This is the only round Gothic structure in Spain. The castle stands on a hill and a beautiful panorama of the bay opens from it.

Almudain Palace is the oldest royal palace in Spain. It used to be an Arab fortress and the palace of the Moorish viziers. Now, it is the residence of the Spanish king in Mallorca. Both the courtyard and the royal palace are open for visitors.

Art lovers must visit the Es Baluard Museum of Modern Art. The museum is situated in the building of the ancient 16th century bastion, which has been restored. In the museum, you will find works of art by artists such as Pablo Picasso, Marc Chagall, Joan Miró and others. A beautiful view of the city opens from the museums’ observation deck.

The regatta consists of short distance races in the bay of Palma. Several races will be held every day. The series consists of 6 super-active racing days. Wonderful weather, gorgeous views of the island of Mallorca, attractions and a high level of adrenaline throughout all 6 racing days — all this is the Copa del Rey 2020 regatta.

No comments, be the first one!

Can i participate in a regatta if i don’t have yachting experience.

Yes, of course. There will be an experienced skipper and team members on the yacht. They will give you a role and teach you everything you need to know to be a useful team member and feel comfortable.

Will I be able to steer a yacht?

Yes, all team members will definitely try themselves in different roles to better understand each other. Standing at the helm is an integral part of training for beginners as well as setting sails, and helping the team during moorings.

Where will I live during the regatta?

As a rule, participants in the regatta live on the yacht. The boat has everything you need for a comfortable stay: nice beds, a kitchen, a shower with toilet. If you do not want to live on a yacht, then you can arrange to stay at the hotel onshore.

What will we eat?

The crew decides altogether what kind of food they prefer to eat and makes necessary purchases. Simple dishes can be cooked, usually taking turns. Some regattas offer daily meals and intensive evening program for all crews.

Do you help with a visa?

We can make an invitation for a visa, but you need to apply for a visa by yourself.

Will I have seasick? What should I do if I have sickness?

Most people tolerate some seasickness easily. If you feel that you are starting to feel sick, it is best to get at the steering wheel or tune the sails. Get yourself busy, show your body that you don’t have time to get sick, you have to fight for victory in the race. There are also many quite effective medicines from sickness. If you start taking them in advance, then the probability of seasickness is almost zero.

How and where will I meet the crew and the captain?

Before each trip, we organize an online meeting where participants get to know each other and the captain. The captain will answer all your questions. The crew will have a group chat so you can get to know each other before the start of the regatta. Then you will meet in the marina.

What clothes do I need?

The main rule is to dress comfortably and according to the weather. Clothing: • windbreaker and pants or shorts; • shirt/jacket with UV protection (thermal underwear and fleece); • adjustable hat/cap; • gloves. We recommend to purchase a long-sleeved jacket with UV protection in order to protect yourself from the sun and strong wind. Yachting shoes should be: • light, with non-slip white outsole; • with the fixed heel; • with a tightly closed nose. During the sailing without shoes, you can fall or injure your fingers and feet on the deck. There are many protruding parts on the boat that are easy to catch. Unfortunately, even experienced sailors are not protected from unpleasant injuries when they ignore this simple rule.

Yachts racing at the Superyacht Cup Palma 2023

The Superyacht Cup gets underway this month in Palma, marking a significant occasion as Europe's longest-running superyacht regatta and one of the first racing events of the Mediterranean season. The four-day regatta runs from 21 June to 24 June and will see a fleet of high-performance sailing yachts put through their paces in the Bay of Palma. Leading the charge out on the water will be two Js - Velsheda and Svea – joined by bluewater cruisers and high-performance carbon flyers. Take a look at this year's lineup...

Length: 43.6m Builder: Vitters

The largest (and newest) member of the J Class fleet, the 44-metre Vitters Svea , will be back racing in Palma for the cup after being crowned overall winner of the J Class last year. The original lines for this Super J were designed by Tore Holm in 1973 and Hoek Design Naval Architects was called on to revive the 75-year-old drawings and bring her up to date, complete with a 53.75-metre carbon fibre main mast. As a result, Svea displaces just 182 tonnes — two tonnes less than her fellow J Hanuman and six tonnes less than Ranger . After her first regatta season under new ownership last year, she is back and ready to take gold again.

Length: 39.5m Builder: Camper & Nicholsons

Velsheda was built in steel in 1933 for WL Stephenson, the chairman of Woolworths in Britain, and named after his three daughters Velma, Sheila and Daphne. This 38.5-metre yacht is the only original J Class not to have been built for the America's Cup . In 1996 she was purchased by Dutch fashion entrepreneur Ronald de Waal who commissioned Southampton Yacht Services to rebuild her. She is a regatta veteran and a regular contender at the Palma Superyacht Cup, returning to face her larger and newer J Class sibling Svea .

Length: 33m Builder: Vitters

Ribelle was built for a highly experienced sailing yacht owner who wanted a boat that could cruise worldwide, but could also offer superior sailing performance when flicked into 'race mode'. Vitters was chosen to build the carbon fibre racer-cruiser, with Malcolm McKeon devising the design. Ribelle can sail at 20 knots in moderate conditions, with the assistance of a self-tacking jib and furling downwind sails and has been a regular competitor participating in regattas such as Les Voiles de St Tropez, St Barths Bucket and Maxi Rolex Cup. In 2017 she competed her second-ever regatta which was the Superyacht Cup in Palma.

Pattoo , formerly Missy , like Ribelle , is a McKeon-designed, Vitters-built yacht. Last year she returned to Palma under her new ownership and took sixth place overall, and is back to climb her way up the finishing order. As a carbon-fibre performance cruiser, she has a carbon-fibre mast from Southern Spars (with ECsix carbon rigging) and carries a sail wardrobe from North Sails. Other features include her lifting keel that extends from 3.75 metres to five metres.

Miss Silver

Length: 36m Builder: Alloy Yachts

Fresh off a victory at the 2021 New Zealand Millennium Cup and on completion of a multi-million-dollar refit, the 36-metre Lady M is ready to do battle in the Bay of Palma. She was built in New Zealand at Alloy Yachts in 1995 as a fast cruising sloop designed by the legendary Ed Dubois. Her refit included a new helm and control stations, and new sails ready for this year's racing scene.

Length: 30.1m  Builder: Nautor Swan

Swan 100 sailing yacht Onyx will be making its Palma Superyacht Cup debut this summer. The 30.1-metre was built by the Finnish yard Swan to a design by German Frers , who also completed the naval architecture. She was the first in the series to feature a semi-raised saloon configuration, giving her a low-profile coach roof. She underwent a major rebuild between 2021 and 2022 at Baltic Yachts in Mallorca, including new decks, new sails, machinery and more.

Length: 24m  Builder: Nautor Swan

Another Swan competing in this year's regatta is Umiko . She returns to the competition after her debut in 2021, where she claimed a podium place in the last race. Proudly part of the Finnish brand’s Swan 80 series, she is one of the smaller contenders, featuring naval architecture and an exterior design by German Frers . Since her launch in 2000, she has benefited from multiple refits, allowing her to retain her competitive edge.

Length: 39m Builder: Fitzroy Yachts

The 39-metre Lady M will be making her debut appearance at the 2023 Superyacht Cup Palma, but she is no stranger to the racing circuit. She was launched in 2006 as the third Dubois performance sloop and had previously competed in regattas around the world under her former names Zulu , Ganesha and Mia Cara . She has recently completed a six-month refit with KRM Yacht, including a full repainting of the hull and superstructure, an interior refresh and replacement of the teak decking. She has had a successful and eventful racing career, participating in the Loro Piana Superyacht Regatta, the Dubois Cup and The Superyacht Cup.

Length: 24m Builder: Wally

The 24-metre wallycento is back for her second successive year after taking a race win on her Superyacht Cup Palma debut last year. Delivered in 2006 as Tango G, Rose has a flush cockpit-less deck, 45-metre carbon rig and 3DL self-tacking jib, setting her up nicely for racing. In "race mode", she has a crew of 24 and offers a total sailplan of 640 square metres upwind. She was delivered as the fourth wallycento model but it’s immediately clear that she differs from her siblings, thanks to her unique design team: Pininfarina for the interior, and Mills Design for the naval architecture and exterior design, which was developed in collaboration with Wally.

Rose Climbs the Heights to Win Superyacht Cup Palma 2023

Rose Climbs the Heights to Win Superyacht Cup Palma 2023

Three days of inspiring racing at Superyacht Cup Palma 2023 concluded today with the 24m Farr-designed Rose becoming the first Wally Yacht to win Europe's longest-running superyacht regatta.

The St. Regis Race Day finale delivered another instalment of the excellent race conditions that the Bay of Palma is famed for, with 10 to 12 knots of wind and bright sunshine.

With two wins in Class B already on account, Rose began the final day in pole position and was able to claim a third race victory — but only by five seconds on corrected time in front of the well sailed Swan 100 Onyx , who finished second in class .

Speaking at the celebratory Prize-Giving on the terrace of the Real Club Náutico de Palma Rose's tactician Jesper Radich said : "This year was amazing for us — at times it was difficult but by the end we had super conditions. It was windy, it was sunny, it was shifty, so not a straightforward course and you really had to make decisions on every leg.

"So really challenging and we came out on the winning side. Today we only won by five seconds, and it doesn't get any closer than that after two hours of racing. I've done a lot of match racing and that was what it was like out there, a lot of fun."

Meanwhile, in a similarly closely contested Class A the venerable and elegant J Class classic Velsheda claimed victory with two race wins, finishing a point ahead of her J Class rival Svea , who posted a 2-2-2 scoreline. Both were clear of the modern 33m Ribelle — who won day 2 — and her Malcolm McKeon-designed Vitters Yard stablemate Pattoo .

"We have just come out of a major refit, so it was great to be here, one hundred percent," said skipper Barney Henshaw-Depledge .

"We had a good first day and then the second was more painful as we were OCS, but today I guess we got lucky. We have had ups and downs in Palma but it's great and the conditions are so good. It's been great."

Superyacht Cup Palma 2024

Announcing that Superyacht Cup Palma 2024 will be held between June 19 to 22 next year, and reflecting on this year's 27th annual celebration of sail, SYC Event Director Kate Branagh said : "We have had a fabulous few days with fantastic racing and great weather, and everyone has enjoyed it. It's been terrific to again welcome boats back to Palma and we are looking forward to seeing them again next year."

Branagh also repeated her gratitude for the support of long-running partners such as Preferred Hotel Partner St. Regis Hotels & Resorts, Destination Partner New Zealand, and Official Timepiece Jaquet Droz.

Thunderstorms and rain Saturday night cleared the air somewhat, giving way to very slightly cooler temperatures and a little less humidity and finally, after some waiting this afternoon, a decent breeze for the final practice race.   But while this longstanding event’s glitzy social scene is taking a back seat this season, the priorities being preserving robust health protocols around the venue, on the water is should be very much back to business.   Seven champion crews return to the defend the titles they won when at the 38th edition in 2019 with competition on three different race courses. This edition there are no coastal races.  And today King Felipe was on the water, joining the training race session on the updated, refitted TP52 Aifos 500 which race in BMW ORC 1.

In effect this 39th Copa del Rey MAPFRE will be the biggest multiclass event to be run in the Mediterranean this year so far.  And with no event last year it is hard to consider there to be much of a form book for this edition.   The strongest class in terms of strength and depth is the ClubSwan 50 which has drawn 16 boats, the biggest fleet yet since the class first raced at the Copa del Rey in 2018. The Nautor ClubSwan one design classes enjoyed the Swan Sardinia Challenge in June in Porto Cervo.   Leonardo Ferragamo’s Cuordilione are the defending 2019 Copa del Rey MAPFRE class champions but finished third in Sardinia in June behind the ClubSwan 50 Hatari which is owned by Marcus Brennecke and has Germany’s Markus Wieser as tactician along with America’s Cup winners Ross Halcrow and Dirk de Ridder in key crew roles. They must start as favourites on the Bay of Palma. Andrey Konogorov’s Sparti finished runners up in June at Port Cervo and has Tomasso Chieffi and Tomislav Basic in their afterguard while Ferragamo’s Cuordileone sails with Manu Weiler as tactician.   ClubSwan 50 World champion tactician Markus Wieser (GER)said, “You always have to remember this is a long, hot, hard week usually with a lot of races and so you have to really stay as cool as you can and not fry your brain and just take it day by day. We have a pretty good team on board who have now been together for four regattas including winning the worlds last year. And we were leading the practise race today before we pulled out. I think the weather has stabilised a bit after last night’s thunderstorms so we should.”   Vasco Vascotto (ITA) who is tactician on the Russian flagged Bronenosec 50 outlined, “This is a strong class for sure. This is a class which you have to learn very quickly or you will finish way behind. But right now I just feel very privileged to be racing here and to be sailing again after so long with the America’s Cup and COVID. This is a great opportunity for everyone, for our community to go racing at a great event. The level is very high. You have gold medallists like Jochen Schümann and Tom Slingsby and many other great, great sailors. It is as usual. I just go out there and fight, fight, fight every day to do well.”   Leonardo Ferragamo, owner-driver of Cuordileone and Chairman of Nautor Holdings smiled, “I have been an admirer of the Copa del Rey, for decades. Now to see a big participation of Swan yachts at this great regatta now is a dream come true. The Copa del Rey provides great scenarios and technical and fair racing and so it is very promising for this 2021 edition. I hope everyone has a lot of fun and fair racing. I am going to do my very, very best (to win again) but there are very, very good teams around. The 36 class is nice and the boat is great performing and has grown well. It has creating a great scenario. My son is on Thirty Six in the 36s. He had better do well or his other brother will take over!”   Of course the ClubSwan 36 division is a new class at the Copa del Rey MAPFRE. With 11 boats racing the fleet is knee deep in talent, some of it transitioning from the Melges one design classes. In Sardinia in June there were just three points separating the top three teams: Giangiacomo Serena di Lapigio’s G-Spot was closely followed by Andrea Lacorte’s Vitamina which won the ClubSwan 36 Gold Cup in Scarlino last year, sailing – as here- with Gabriele Benussi as tactician. G Spot Sailing Team were previously Melges 32 World League Champions and have Italian 2000 Olympian Michele Paoletti in the afterguard. Among the top contenders on the Bay of Palma will surely be the Fra Martini Sailing team of Turinese brothers Edoardo and Vanni Pavesio which has the combined talents of Luna Rossa’s Francesco Bruni and past Melges 24 World Champion and Nacra 17 campaigner Lorenzo Bressani aboard.   “We are new to the class, we only did two regattas before and we are getting better with each one and so I hope we will be in the top three. I guess the other two Italian boars are the favourites, G Spot and Vitamina, but we give it everything and try to beat them.” Said Bruni.   New to the fleet are the British flagged Black Seal team of Richard Thompson, who have also moved to the radical new 36 footer from the Melges 24 class where they were ranked number 1 in the world for two years.   The ClubSwan 42 sees the return of the 2019 champions the Romanian flagged Natalia of Natalia Brailoiu, project manager Luca Lanzillo (ITA) remarks, “The number of boats is quite similar to last time but of course there has been this pandemic and so we cannot really say what has been going on with people in this class. There are some fast boats because some people took the time to do some work on their boats, the level is a little bit higher.”   “In the last two years we have just done the one regatta, the Nautor Swan Challenge in Porto Cervo in June and we were third, after one and a half years not racing that was just getting some rust off so I hope we can do better here and try and win again. We have good sensations, the boat is going fast I have been coming here since 2007 and it is an annual fixture for me. It means a lot to me to be here, to our owner, to the crew. Everyone here wants to win, but let’s see!”   In Porto Cervo Pedro Vaquer Comas’ ClubSwan 42 Nadir won her Class ahead of Koiré – Spirit of Nerina owned by Luca Formentini. Third place went to Natalia. Sotheby’s IRC Class 1 is very much the domain of the TP52s which race on corrected time. Top level 52 Super Series regulars are Andy Soriano’s TP52 Alegre which won her class in 2018 and the French crew of Jean Luc Petithuguenin’s Paprec, Paprec have finished on the podium several times and led in the interim stages but have not yet won the class.   Alegre’s British navigator Will Best “In fact all the other TP52s know each other quite well, better than we know them for sure but I think we can do well. We all love this regatta as does Andy our owner and it is a great chance to do some sailing, even if this is our first regatta of the season. It will not be easy by any means, for example against one of the other TP52s we are giving them two minutes in 100, so we just need to stay out of the way and keep the boat going. It is good practice for us and good fun.”   BMW ORC 1 is 12 boats strong and sees the class champions Estrella Damm, the team led by Luis Martinex Doreste back to defend their title. They have swapped their DK46 with which they were twice two top boat overall for an XP50. Double Laser Olympian Doreste has won Copa del Rey classes seven times and this time has Portugal’s 470 Atlanta medallist Hugo Rocha as tactician, Roberto Molina – 470 Los Angeles gold medallist as trimmer and Gonzalo Infante as navigator. Martinez-Doreste said: “We have not had much time to train with this new boat, just a weekend and it really is a mystery. Compared to our rivals, we have no references. The whole fleet is strong, but I think the most competitive in ORC are the Swan 45, especially Rats on Fire and Porrón IX. It seems likely we will have conditions of up to 15 knots, which is good for us. I think there is a little more wind on Monday, but we are interested in a breeze, up to 13-14 knots.”   BMW ORC 2 and BMW ORC 3 both see their titleholders return looking to win again. Jose Coello’s Sinergia 40 won ORC 2 in 2019 but move to ORC 3 where they come up against last year’s winners, the modified Sinergia 40 L’Immens-Laplaza Assessors.   Racing starts Monday at 1300hrs, local time.

Since its inception in 1996, the Superyacht Cup Palma (SYCP) has been the most traditional superyacht regatta in Europe. The annual event, which is being held for the 29th time this year, brings together some of the largest sailing yachts in the world to sail against each other in the bay of Palma. The event combines competitive racing in a constant summer breeze with a colourful and relaxed social programme in the maritime heart of Palma, the centre of the Mediterranean superyacht scene. In addition, the exclusive event offers an attractive environment for informal networking in the Race Village, which becomes a meeting point for owners, guests and sponsors after the regattas.

If all the yachts taking part in this year's SYCP were lined up in a row, the total length would be 396.79 metres. The 59.30 metre long performance ketch "Maximus", which is making its Superyacht Cup debut, is particularly eagerly awaited. The Germán Frers design was launched last year by the Dutch shipyard Vitters and commissioned by an experienced owner who wanted "the most beautiful and fastest ketch in the world". According to the technical data, it looks as if the mission was a success. "Maximus" displaces 330 tonnes and carries a maximum of 3,980 square metres of sail laminate from Doyle Sails on its 65 and 48 metre high masts. So let the supersailing show begin!

Three J-Class yachts at the Superyacht Cup Palma

As in previous Superyacht Cups, three J-Class yachts will once again be setting course for Palma de Mallorca this year, including the 44-metre "Svea", the 39.50-metre "Velsheda" and the 39.89-metre "Rainbow", all of which will be crewed by a large number of professionals.

The 39-metre-long André Hoek design "Atalante" is also an old acquaintance on the SYCP entry list; the last time the Alu-Slup was on the starting line was in 2017.

"After taking a break for a few years, we are all the more looking forward to this year's event and the regattas," says Captain Michael Elias. "If we are in the Mediterranean at the time of the SYCP, participation is a must!"

YYachts shipyard boss Michael Schmidt himself at the helm

There is also a nice field of competitors in the 80-footer this year. The 25-metre Swan "Dark Horse" (ex-"Chessie") is sailing against "Umiko" and the 24-metre Wally "Rose", which dominated the races last year and is determined to defend its title. The competitive 80-foot quartet is completed by with "Calabash" the latest format from YYachts-Hallen which has an extremely experienced regatta sailor at the helm in the form of shipyard manager Michael Schmidt. Spectators can look forward to these races in particular.

"The Superyacht Cup Palma is a new event for us," says "Dark Horse" skipper Sacha Pace. "The regatta area is great, and of course we can't wait to experience the social side - the SYCP is known for its racing and fun on land."

The 39-metre "Cervo" (ex-"G2"), designed by Bill Tripp, and the similarly sized 128-foot "Vijorana", another Hoek design, round off the field of participants.

YACHT's sister magazine BOOTE EXCLUSIV is media partner of the Superyacht Cup Palma and will publish daily regatta updates from 19 to 22 June.

Two boats involved in horror crash as sailor thrown overboard

Rough seas contributed to the awful incident (Picture: BNPS)

Two boats were involved in a devastating crash and a sailor was thrown overboard during a yacht race.

A man was flung from a boat as competitors battled rough seas during the Round the Island Race in the Isle of Wight today.

He then desperately clung onto his life jacket before being rescued.

The Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI) rushed to his aid to pull him from the water despite the extreme conditions.

His condition is not yet known.

It’s thought that at least one of the boats involved capsized.

Wind speeds soared to 64mph before the shocking incident happened off Yarmouth.

The event, which sees boaters sail 50 miles around the Isle of Wight, normally attracts one of the largest fleets of any yacht race.

But the severe weather had a major impact this morning with 418 yachts retiring and just 153 finishing the race.

Elsewhere today, a British couple were thrown from a boat and seriously injured after it exploded in Majorca .
