Icon Yachts reveals interiors of 64m superyacht concept Mission

Dutch yard Icon Yachts has offered a first look at the interiors of its 63.9-metre expedition yacht concept, Mission. First revealed during the Monaco Yacht Show 2023, the explorer comes from the drawing board of Bernd Weel Design and would be capable of carrying six tenders and RIBs, plus a submersible for three passengers and an Airbus H130.

Mission's new interiors are courtesy of Carla Guilhem , whose "softer". "feminine" style was "deliberately chosen to balance [the yacht's] rugged, hard-edged exterior."

The yacht has an innovative design that centres around modular elements that can be altered and adapted according to the use of the vessel. A representative of Icon explained: "The use of containers allows owners or special charters to adapt the vessel to their evolving needs by incorporating modular areas within or onboard the yacht".

Containers could include scientific research equipment or surplus water toys and tenders and "these dual scenarios can coexist seamlessly without altering the vessel's primary purpose". The containers would be stored in a hexagonal-styled mid-section of the vessel.

The yacht's interiors are futuristic but warm, guided by the principle that it "should be what you see through the windows that grabs the guests' attention", according to designer Bernd Weel. He added that the yacht's distinctive distribution of volume also allows for the creation of "some very special interior spaces". 

"While the exterior of Mission represents the search for the unknown, the interior is designed to facilitate self-discovery, the exploration of the self," explained Carla Guilhem.

"The project embodies an 'experience-focused' design, meaning the vessel is designed to facilitate specialised expeditions, exploration and yacht cruises," continued Weel. "As for the exterior design, it showcases geometrical elements characterized by strong, defined lines. Our inspiration stemmed from outdoor products designed to withstand tough expeditions and SUVs capable of carrying various cargo items. The result is a robust, 'go-anywhere' design with a contemporary and modern appearance."

"Mission represents Icon's commitment to innovation and purpose-driven travel," said Micca Ferrero, owner of Icon Yachts. "It redefines what an explorer yacht can achieve – from sustainability and modularity to profound experiential impact. We're proud to set new benchmarks and lead the way in supporting sustainable exploration."

Mission would have a cruising speed of 12 knots and a 6,000 nautical mile range.

Oca means home in Brazilian native language. This logo will be used on a yacht and the client was looking for an icon that represents a native house, such as a teepee house. This was really fun to make and very pleasant to achieve. The 68m superyacht LOON (ex LOON 221, ICON, ICON 62) is a custom-built charter yacht, originally launched by the prominent Dutch shipyard Icon Yachts in 2009. She undertook a five-meter transom extension to an overall length of 68 meters in 2014, performed by her home yard, in partnership with Evan K. Marshall. Accommodation is provided for a total of 12 charter guests in 7 staterooms. Her latest refit was in 2020.

LOON 221 yacht's interior styling is done by Redman Whiteley Dixon, with the interior design being a work of the renowned Studio Linse. The decor is timeless, elegant and neutral. A sumptuous salon lounge on the main deck offers plush seating, set in a social atmosphere surrounding a large coffee table and the latest in entertainment; further aft is the formal dining easily accompanying up to 10 guests. She boasts panoramic windows which provide great natural light and stunning views from the salon and dining area. Soft lighting and bespoke finishes create a sophisticated feel, perfect for every occasion. On the main deck forward is the master stateroom, boasting a full beam layout, king-size bed, easy access to the upper observation lounge and study and a large ensuite with a luxurious custom tub. The master cabin benefits from spectacular views, excellent storage and exterior access on both port and starboard, leading to the upper foredeck, featuring seating and sun pads.

Her upper deck comprises a sky lounge, complete with sofas, a beautiful leather ottoman and full entertainment systems. The VIP guest cabin is located on the upper deck forward of the sky lounge to starboard and features a generous shower room. On the lower deck are two double cabins, as well as two twin cabins, all ensuite. ICON has a fabulous beach club thanks to the extension she received; it includes a gym, hammam, sauna, wet bar, lounge, bathroom with shower, dive centre, exterior sunloungers on the teak beach and direct access to the four lower deck cabins.

On deck guests will find there are plenty of areas to relax, entertain and be social, no matter the occasion. Her expansive teak beach and beach club, based on the lower deck, features an extended swim area, sun loungers, lounge, hammam, sauna, wet bar, and shower, it is the ideal area for incredible fun during the day, enjoying the multitude of water toys. On the main deck, aft of the salon is large exterior aft deck, which features an alfresco dining area, sun pads, and large swimming pool. The upper deck has ample outside seating and a further alfresco dining table. Her top deck boasts additional sun pads, seating, and deluxe Jacuzzi tub.

The owner’s suite has a private flight of stairs with direct access to an owner’s salon, which can be kept private or opened up to guests. The architecture of the outside areas of the yacht helps give the exterior its “definitive proportions.” Dramatically staged overhangs with raked superstructure were carefully balanced in profile against the interior volumes, giving the yacht huge amounts of living area for its size. The interior styling features modern furnishing in soft tones for the relaxed and inviting atmosphere.

Thanks to the advanced technology used in the construction of the yacht, she can provide smooth cruising experience in any conditions, while stabilizers reduce roll motion and for ultimate comfort.

Superyacht LOON 221 is the first Icon Yachts vessel ever launched by the shipyard. She boasts a very graceful steel hull built with an aluminium superstructure. Cleveland Museum of Art to Return a Rare Ancient Icon to Libya

A 2,200-year-old sculpture of a bearded man carved from basalt, unearthed in the 1930s, is believed to have been stolen in the early 1940s.

While excavating an ancient Greek palace in eastern Libya in the 1930s, an archaeologist dug up a large earthen storage jar, looked inside and spotted something unexpected — a 2,200-year-old sculpture of a bearded man carved from basalt, a dark volcanic stone.

The two-foot-tall antiquity, most likely chiseled during ancient Egypt’s Ptolemaic Dynasty, was a rare find. Known as a striding male figure, it is one of only 33 statues like it known to exist, Egyptologists say.

But it wasn’t long before thieves got ahold of the bearded figure and took it on an illicit odyssey that brought it, in 1991, to the Cleveland Museum of Art.

On Wednesday, after curators had reviewed abundant proof that the item was stolen from Libya, including photos of it on display in the 1940s at a small museum near its discovery site, the museum agreed to transfer ownership to Libyan officials. In turn, Libya is allowing the museum to keep it on loan.

“When confronting a situation like this we look at all the material and try to come to an agreement that is beneficial to all parties,” said Seth Pevnick, curator of Greek and Roman art at the Cleveland museum.

“It’s less about ownership and more about access” to the object, he said, adding that the museum is hoping to display it on loan for five more years.

In a statement, the head of the Libyan Department of Antiquities, Mohamed Faraj Mohamed, said, “We look forward to continued cooperation with the Museum.”

The Cleveland museum’s decision mirrors recent moves by some institutions to cede ownership of select items rather than contest claims that they were looted. The Metropolitan Museum of Art in April handed back two major sculptures to Thailand, while announcing “a shared commitment to collaborate on exchanges of art, expertise, and the display and study of Thai art.”

But experts like Katie Paul of the Athar Project, which investigates global antiquities trafficking, said too few museums are showing a willingness to return items on their own initiative, and too many do not act until they are pressured by law enforcement .

“Returning something that is proven to be stolen is of course appropriate,” she said, “but they still need to be more proactive in investigating their own provenance records.”

“So museums are taking a small step in the right direction,” Paul added. “But there are a lot more steps to go before we see true responsibility and accountability.”

As for the striding male, his journey most likely began between 200 and 100 B.C., when he was carved as an icon during a long era of Greco-Roman rule over Egypt.

He remained in the region until just before World War II, when his storage jar was found. Pevnick said he might have been “put there for safekeeping.”

The sculpture was placed in the nearby Ptolemais Museum, only to be stolen in the early 1940s when the region became a war zone between the Italians and the British. The statue reappeared in Switzerland in the early 1960s, researchers say, and was ultimately acquired by the art dealer Lawrence A. Fleischman .

Fleischman donated him to the Cleveland museum in 1991 on its 75th anniversary. He will remain there in a display case until Libyan officials retrieve him.

Space elevators could get us to Mars in record time — and Japan is planning one for 2050

• A space elevator could make it much cheaper and faster to get goods to other planets, like Mars.
• The Obayashi Corporation based in Japan announced in 2012 plans to begin building one by next year.
• Not only would it cost $100 billion, there are huge technological and organizational challenges.

Imagine a long tether linking Earth to space that could launch us to orbit at a fraction of the cost and slingshot us to other worlds at record speed.

That's the basic idea behind a space elevator .

Instead of taking six to eight months to reach Mars, scientists have estimated a space elevator could get us there in three to four months or even as quickly as 40 days .

The concept of space elevators isn't new, but engineering such a structure would be no easy feat , and many other issues besides technology stand in the way.

That's why the ambition to seriously build one is fairly recent.

The Japan-based company Obayashi Corporation thinks it has the expertise.

Japan aims to build a space elevator by 2050

Known for constructing the world's tallest tower, the Tokyo Skytree , Obayashi Corporation announced in 2012 that it would reach even loftier heights with its own space elevator.

In a report that same year, the company said it would begin construction on the $100-billion project by 2025 and could start operations as early as 2050.

We checked in with Yoji Ishikawa, who wrote the report and is part of the company's future technology creation department, to see how the project is progressing ahead of 2025.

While Ishikawa said the company likely won't start construction next year, it is currently "engaged in research and development, rough design, partnership building, and promotion," he told Business Insider.

Some have doubted such a structure is even possible.

"It's been sort of a kooky idea," said Christian Johnson, who published a report on space elevators last year in the peer-reviewed Journal of Science Policy & Governance.

"That said, there are some people who are real scientists who are really on board with this and really want to make it happen," Johnson said.

A cheaper route to space

Launching humans and objects into space on rockets is extremely expensive. For example, NASA has estimated its four Artemis moon missions will cost $4.1 billion per launch .

The reason is something called the rocket equation . It takes a lot of fuel to get to space, but the fuel is heavy, which increases the amount of fuel you need. "And so you see the kind of vicious cycle there," Johnson said.

With a space elevator, you don't need rockets or fuel.

According to some designs, space elevators would shuttle cargo to orbit on electromagnetic vehicles called climbers. These climbers could be remotely powered — like through solar power or microwaves — eliminating the need for on-board fuel.

In his report for the Obayashi Corporation, Ishikawa wrote that this type of space elevator could help drop the cost of moving goods to space to $57 per pound. Other estimates for space elevators in general have put the price at $227 per pound.

Even SpaceX's Falcon 9, which, at around $1,227 per pound, is one of the cheaper rockets to launch, is still about five times as expensive as the higher cost estimates for space elevators.

There are other benefits besides cost, too.

There's no danger of a rocket exploding , and the climbers could be zero-emission vehicles, Johnson said. At a relatively leisurely pace of 124 miles per hour, the Obayashi Corporation's climbers would travel slower than rockets with fewer vibrations, which is good for sensitive equipment.

Ishikawa said the Obayashi Corporation sees a space elevator as a new kind of public works project that would benefit all of humankind.

There's not enough steel on Earth to make a space elevator

Right now, one of the biggest obstacles to building a space elevator is what to make the tether or tube from.

To withstand the tremendous tension it would be under, the tube would have to be very thick if it were made out of typical materials, like steel. However, "if you try to build it out of steel, you would need more steel than exists on Earth," Johnson said.

Ishikawa's report suggested Obayashi Corporation might use carbon nanotubes . A nanotube is a rolled-up layer of graphite, the material that's used in pencils.

It's much lighter and is less likely to break under tension compared to steel, so the space elevator could be much smaller, Johnson said. But there's a catch.

While nanotubes are very strong, they're also tiny, a billionth of a meter in diameter. And researchers haven't made them very lengthy. The longest is only about 2 feet.

To be properly balanced while still reaching geosynchronous orbit — where objects stay in sync with Earth's rotation — the tether would need to be at least 22,000 miles long, per Ishikawa's report.

"So we're not there," Johnson said of the nanotube length. "But that doesn't mean it's impossible."

Instead, researchers might need to develop an entirely new material, Ishikawa said.

Other obstacles

Whatever the material turns out to be, there are still other problems.

For instance, a space elevator's tether would be under such incredible tension that it would be prone to snapping, Johnson said. A lightning strike could vaporize it. There's also other weather to consider like tornadoes, monsoons, and hurricanes.

Locating the tether base at the equator would lessen the likelihood of hurricanes , but it would still need to be in the open ocean to make it more difficult for terrorists to target, Johnson said.

It would also take a lot of trips to make up for that giant price tag for construction.

That's only scratching the surface of the challenges. And they can't all be solved by one company, Ishikawa said. "We need partnerships," he said. "We need different industries."

"Of course," Ishikawa said, "raising funds is very essential."

That's a lot of obstacles to overcome to start construction in time for operation by 2050, especially since Ishikawa estimated it would take 25 years to build. He noted that the 2050 estimate always came with caveats about the technology progressing. "It's not our goal or promise," he said, but the company is still aiming for that date.

"I think that those time estimates are optimistic," Johnson said, "even assuming there was a breakthrough tomorrow."
