Southport yacht club’s megayacht berth official opening.

Seen by many as Australia’s most progressive yacht club in recent times, Southport Yacht Club, on Queensland’s Gold Coast, has taken another significant step into the future with the opening of its spectacular Megayacht docking facility.

Costing some $9 million to construct, this state-of-the-art floating dock sees the Club align itself with the “spare no expense” international superyacht and megayacht market. It will bring millions of dollars and other benefits to the region on an annual basis. The privately owned vessels that fit the Megayacht classification can range in size up to 130m in overall length..

More than 700 VIP guests, including representatives of the Queensland government, the Gold Coast’s Mayor, Tom Tate, plus Southport Yacht Club’s Commodore, Ken Tregeagle, and General Manager, Brett James, led the celebrations on the eleven huge concrete pontoons that form the massive facility at the club.

John Hogan, whose company, Superior Jetties, applied pioneering technology to construct the pontoons; confirmed that the technology used to create the entire dock was a tribute to Australian designers, manufacturers and engineers.

Designer and technician, Greg Forgan-Smith, said everyone associated with the project deserved recognition.

Southport Yacht Club Superyacht Berth

The Gold Coast is the number one Superyacht destination in the country. With our support the development of a Superyacht berthing facility delivers significant value to the local economy.

Project overview

The Queensland Government partnered with City of Gold Coast and Southport Yacht Club to deliver a 163-metre Superyacht berth at the Southport Yacht Club. Officially opened in February 2022, the new berth allows the Southport Yacht Club to cater for larger vessels (up to 135 metres), opening up the Gold Coast to some of the world’s largest and most luxurious yachts.

This project is a part of the $25 million Growing Tourism Infrastructure (GTI) Fund 2020/21 which is a key element of Queensland’s Economic Recovery Strategy: Unite and Recover for Queensland Jobs to help accelerate the State’s recovery from COVID-19.

Australia’s Largest Superyacht Berth Set to Launch

Australia’s largest superyacht berth is set to launch in the coming days. The construction of a 160m superyacht berth at Southport Yacht Club represents a milestone development for Australian marine infrastructure, as the country prepares to welcome some of the world’s largest superyachts.

Ideally situated between Australia’s popular cruising grounds of Sydney and the Great Barrier Reef, the Gold Coast is a major hub for superyachts. A diverse destination to visit within itself - boasting long stretches of inviting sand beaches, lush hinterland and plenty of exciting activities - the Gold Coast is also home to some of Australia’s most important shipyard and marina facilities.

Another key piece of superyacht infrastructure is set to be unveiled tomorrow with the launch of Southport Yacht Club’s 160m megayacht berth . The eagerly anticipated project adds to the already stellar berthing facilities at Southport Yacht Club , placing superyachts within minutes of the Gold Coast’s top attractions.

The development is an integral part of the Queensland government’s Superyacht Strategy, as the Sunshine State cements its position as a superyacht hub for the Asia-Pacific. At 160-metres in length, the berth will accommodate vessels of up to 130-metres, or alternatively two large superyachts of around 70-metres. 600-amp power will also be available at the new jetty, enough to service the largest yachts in the country.

Multi-award-winning manufacturer, and local Gold Coast company, Superior Jetties has been responsible for the construction of this landmark infrastructure. Superior Jetties has also been involved in other important superyacht developments in Australia, notably with the recent upgrades of Sanctuary Cove Marina and The Boat Works .

Following the unveiling of the new megayacht berth, work will then be completed on the landscaping of the adjacent waterfront at Southport.

“Having the largest floating Megayacht berth in Australia with power to match this will make the Gold Coast the number one berthing destination ,” Mark Riddell, Waterfront Manager of Southport Yacht Club, told Superyachts.com. “The location is an amazing drawcard for superyachts, with our world-famous beaches within walking distance, as well as the city’s theme parks, shopping malls, and restaurants just a stone’s throw away.”

The passing of new charter legislation in December 2019 has made Australia an enticing proposition for large international superyachts eager to explore the country’s diverse cruising grounds. Southport Yacht Club’s superyacht berth is a significant step in accommodating these larger vessels. The upcoming Australia InDepth documentary series will shine a light on country’s all-year-round cruising opportunities, as well as key superyacht infrastructure.

STAGE 2 – This will include the closure of the outdoor pool & BBQ areas that are now scheduled to take place between mid August and end of November 2024.

Work will include closing off all visitor parking and direct access to the entrance of the East tower reception. Access to the reception will be via the NORTH tower foyer. Arrival parking will be at the very bottom of the driveway along Pacific st. Walkway access along the side of the driveway ramp will be available for pedestrians to the entrance of the North tower.

The above scheduled works are expected to take place between April and October 2024.

Founded in 2014, Southport Yacht Club (SYC) is focused on boating! Our goal is to spend time off the dock and on the water in the North Carolina Cape Fear Region.  Our club is a great place to learn about the regional waters, acquire additional boating skills, develop friendships, and feel part of a community.  The club is 100% percent volunteer based and our members organize sailboat races/regattas, cruises, educational seminars, and super fun events throughout the year.
