Let's Talk

Whether you are looking to build from scratch, restore a classic beauty or make improvements to your current yacht, it all starts with a vision, and a conversation. We're here to discuss your next project, whenever you're ready.

Setag Yachts

Yacht refit.

One of the most common questions we are asked by potential clients is what we mean exactly when we talk about offering a yacht refit service.

A refit is not just a solution to your challenges – but instead it’s protecting your investment. A sensible way of buying, instead of solving a challenge once you’ve bought it.

The best way to understand our service is to think in terms of buying a house. When you buy a new house, what’s the first thing you do? You renovate, redecorate and revive the decor. In other words, you ensure that it is more than simply another house for you – it becomes your new home. And by doing this, you personalise it to your style and ultimately increase it’s value ready to move on in the future.

Bespoke luxury

It’s very unlikely that you will want to live with the previous owner’s colour schemes, furniture and taste in interior design. And yet this is exactly what many people do when they buy a pre-owned boat. It makes no sense: why would you sleep in someone else’s mattress and rely on outdated technology – be it the navigation system or a home entertainment that isn’t compatible with your requirements?

This is where Setag comes in.

Future proof your yacht

We offer a ‘Third Way’ for customers who previously only had the choice of buying new or compromising with a pre-owned boat that isn’t fit for their purpose.

Our design & refit service means you get the best of both worlds, truly adding value by ensuring your yacht is future proof – drawing upon the same talents who built your boat in the first place and upgrading it to tomorrow’s standard – bespoke according to your needs.

Protect your investment

There’s a lot of logic in refitting a yacht: firstly because it can create an environment of which you are the first to experience; and secondly because it makes economic sense, adding value to your yacht and protecting your investment – both your yacht and its refit when you come to sell.

And when you’re spending between half a million and £5 million on a pre-owned yacht, why wouldn’t you change it to the decor and the technology that suits you? Why would you compromise and settle for something that is second best?

That’s why a refit with SETAG Yachts makes sense.

When is it time for a refit?

The reasons for a design and refit project and the age of the yachts we have Remastered, are as varied as the vessels and the owners themselves. Generally, a refit can be carried out on a yacht between 1 – 25 years old and typically, the rework coincides with technical/engineering upgrades of which we cover.

Many owners love their yachts and how they look externally, and simply outgrow the interior. We can elevate any project, small or large and all within a very quick turnaround.

Fall in love with your boat all over again.

What is the cost of a refit?

There is a false impression about yachts that they only require a refit if they are on their last legs and are barely seaworthy. This simply isn’t the case – it should be seen as a way to futureproof your yacht and make it reflect your taste, personality and needs.

A refit by Setag is there to add value.

Redefined by Setag

Each project is truly bespoke, catering to individual needs. If you are moving into a new house, you naturally want to renovate to put your own stamp on it – to make it feel like your home. So, why would you be happy to live with someone else’s taste when it comes to your yacht?

Yachting Life

To be a yacht owner is a very special feeling. To feel the freedom of being on the water, away from the pressures of everyday life, with no deadlines but those set by the sun, is a very unique type of escape. It offers you a sense of luxury that you can rarely attain from material products – the luxury of time and space.

With SETAG, you can make a huge difference when you buy something secondhand, maybe a bit tired and then you put all of this beauty in it and you create what effectively is a brand new boat. Completely to your own liking, your own standard...creating the perfect boat for us.
Brilliant concept...new boat look and feel at pre-owned prices - by the industry experts. Recycling at its best!
The great thing is, none of this is off the shelf - I love this boat and now she’s got her frock on...this is the best money I've spent.
If you want to redefine, refit and remaster your boat who better to do it than the people who designed it in the first place? "What a fantastic idea!"
We cannot recommend the SETAG team highly enough. If you love your current boat, then for a fraction of the cost to change it, have it SETAG’d. The SY branding certainly helped us obtain a premium price. We got what we paid for her in 2017 plus what we spent with you!
I have worked with Chris for over 30 years and I’m pleased to see him develop his own brand - along with likeminded people with industry-leading expertise. The future is bright for Setag Yachts and pre-owned yacht owners, who can now refurbish their vessels to today’s - or even tomorrow's standards.
That has been one of the key selling points for us – having that personalised service and having a boat that is unique to us – is standout in its own right. We are pretty blown away…very very pleased. I think it’s fabulous…it has transformed the boat.
The perfect way to open up a new market: the "true reflection of luxury". Setag gets it: simplicity and personalisation are key – with the depth of knowledge to deliver.
Setag are probably the only company who can carry out all the tasks as a ‘one stop shop’. Other yards were reluctant to price work and needed to subcontract many tasks meaning higher costs and longer lead times. If you are in any doubt speak to Chris and his team, they know boats like no one else.
We have been waiting for this quality of service: a comprehensive, professional refit that we can rely on – because of the pedigree of its staff, with over 200 years' experience in our market.
You have put Princess magic into our beloved Broom.
Never have I come across a more able collection of professionals in this market. We have complete trust in Setag, since its team has been in the business for as long as we can remember. We're very excited to welcome this specialist refit company into our portfolio.

Top worldwide yacht refit and repair shipyards

Hannah Rankine

When purchasing an operational superyacht, a new owner will likely want to overhaul his or her new investment to suit décor to personal tastes, ensuring interior layouts are fit for purpose and systems are up to date. They will want to upgrade the yacht to the highest possible standards.

Consequently, they face the difficult task of deciding which of the world’s leading facilities to select for refit, conversion or repair. Although location will be a leading factor in shipyard selection, so too will reputation and past project experience.

Here, Yachting Pages lists some of the world’s best superyacht refit and repair shipyards, from A to Z.

1. Amico & Co

Amico shipyard

Recognised by a name with two centuries of history in the yachting industry, Amico & Co was established as a refit specialist in 1991, and now accommodates vessels up to 200 metres (656 feet) in facilities spanning just over 50,000 square metres.

Current facilities include four dry docks with lengths up to 170 metres (557 feet), 12 covered refit and repair areas, two travel lifts (835T and 320T), a keel pit and ample in-house workshops for engineering, engine and generator services, technical systems, painting, carpentry, interiors, electrics and more.

The yard does an average of 135 projects per year. Some of its most notable of all time include a major 17-month conversion aboard an 85-metre (278-foot) passenger yacht formerly known as Delma, the refit of 75-metre (246-foot) Amels M/Y Boadicea, and of 55-metre (180-foot) Proteksan M/Y Turquoise, which saw new dining and entertaining areas added to her sundeck, and a Nikki Beach-style night cinema to her main aft deck.

Alberto Amico, president and operations manager of Amico & Co, said, “The superyacht refit market is thriving as the fleet continues to grow and there are good opportunities on pre-owned yachts that the owner can refit and upgrade in a short time for a fair price.

“Owners who desire customised yachts that meet the highest safety and environmental standards are increasingly embracing the benefits of the refit solution. The nature of the market demand is changing, however for larger yachts and bigger refit projects, most clients are now organised with qualified consultants and managers, and as a result, the design and bidding process is better managed. Clients pay more attention to the key criteria for choosing a yard: reliability, quality and technical capability.”

2. Astilleros de Mallorca S.A.

Astilleros de Mallorca shipyard

Astilleros de Mallorca, founded in 1942, is a fully equipped and specialised shipyard which allows refit, repair or maintenance work on all yachts of a range of sizes.

With over 50 direct employees, divided into nine different disciplines or workshops, and with over 450 companies based in Palma dedicated to the yachting industry, clients retain control over how, when and by whom the refit is carried out. Delivering precision and attention to detail has made Astilleros de Mallorca a reference shipyard in the refit and repair industry, meeting owners’ requirements on budget and on schedule.

Its most visible project to date is aboard iconic Feadship Highlander back in 2013/14, which saw her transom modified and stern extended by an additional 3.65 metres (11.9 feet). Updated zero-speed stabilisers, audio-visual and sewage systems completed the refit to prepare her for charter.

Fitting out the fleet: the best superyacht refit projects of 2023

From cosmetic adaptations to complete rebuilds and technical overhauls, BOAT takes a look at the most interesting and exciting refits of 2023, starting with the mammoth transformation and rebuild of Oceanco’s Project H…

The evolution of Project H

What began as a refit project - Project H - became a complete rebuild and transformation of the 95-metre Oceanco Indian Empress ( ex- Al Mirqab ). Twenty-two years after initial delivery and this three-year rebuild, she was relaunched as the 103-metre H3 . Described by Oceanco’s Chairman Mohammed Al Barwani as a "rebirth," the collaborative project was between the original yard Oceanco and designers, The A Group , with refreshed interiors and exteriors penned by Reymond Langton .

Virtually nothing was left from the original design except her hull, which was extended by 10 metres. Far more than just a lick of paint, the yacht has a completely reimagined image, with increased window area to harness more natural light and ocean views. While she now accommodates fewer guests, this has translated into more space per guest and additional room to house more crew, elevating the service. Multiple modifications were also made to improve efficiency, including new engines and systems, now making her IMO Tier III compliant. The project has been technically classified by Lloyds Register as a new build.

Athos' award-winning extension

Fifty pairs of hands went into the comprehensive 14-month refit of the two-masted, 63.2-metre schooner Athos . The works included considerable modifications to her interior areas as well as a complex 1.25-metre extension to her canoe-style stern, optimising her increased deck space offering for charter clients.

The refit was undertaken at Huisfit, Royal Huisman 's refit arm, and brought in the original team of Hoek Design to assist with the modifications. Project manager Jeremy "Bear" Wynne from Wynne Projects praised the quality of Huisfit's work. "The multiple modifications have been beautifully done. The additions and modifications have not only improved the functionality of the yacht, they have also enhanced the appearance," he said.  This refit was so impressive that Athos won the Refitted Yachts category at the World Superyacht Awards 2023.

Overhaul of Omnia

Beginning her journey at Amels, the 61-metre Omnia ( ex-Akula) was one of a trio of pilot vessels built for the Dutch Navy in 1997 and later converted into a superyacht in 1999. She has undergone various refit and modification projects. The most recent, a 14-month project after she was sold in 2020, which combined structural, mechanical and cosmetic works of up to $14 million. Project managed by Seara Maritime , the rebuild earned a nomination in the Best Refit category at the 2023 World Superyacht Awards.

Her commercial image was overhauled by British studio H2 Yacht Design with a new wheelhouse, new main deck, new sheerline and new exterior decks. Inside, Greek design studio Karageorgiou ensured the new interiors were brighter and lighter. Omnia now hosts two more guest staterooms, accommodating up to 16 guests. The upper deck was rebuilt with the original funnel remodelled in aluminium for weight savings. Elsewhere, more than 90 per cent of machinery and systems were replaced or upgraded.

Emerald’s charter-friendly refit

The 33-year-old Feadship Emerald emerged from a transformative 16-month refit at Balk Shipyard in February 2023. Originally launched as Alfa Alfa , the 50.4-metre motor yacht has now been revitalised to meet the evolving needs of today’s charter client while mirroring the traditional Feadship design qualities. “We’ve not ripped the soul out of it; instead, the refit is giving the yacht another 20 years of life,” said James Hall of TWW Yachts . The refit has resulted in a 2.5-metre extension, with an extended cockpit and restyled stern, a hull repaint of ‘Orion Green’ to complement her new name and a reconfiguration of the sundeck with Jacuzzi. Thanks to Design Unlimited , further remodelling has been carried out inside. Emerald  is now available to charter with TWW Yachts .

From the deck up of Costa Magna

The owner of a 28.6-metre Couach was delighted with the refit works carried out by KRM Yacht . So when he upgraded to the 44.5-metre Costa Magna , he brought her to Istanbul for a full-scale strip-down and rebuild. Over this year, the yacht’s 240 square metres of teak deck will be pulled up and replaced, and her hull will be brought back to a bare shell to be repaired and repainted. Technical works will include modernising navigational equipment, replacing engines and gensets and installing a new automation system.

Built in 1983 by Turkish shipyard Turquoise , she has undergone ten refits in her lifetime, with the goal now to create a more modern-looking take on the original lines. “Having embarked on an incredible 40-year worldwide journey, the yacht is now back in Istanbul for a […] full refit,” explained the captain of Costa Magna. “We eagerly anticipate seeing Costa Magna restored to her former glory,” he added.

Perking up Pink Gin IV

Six years after sailing out of Baltic Yachts , 53.9-metre Pink Gin IV is back for a refit and refresh. The 10-month refit period will mainly see aesthetic and performance enhancements, including the yacht's reconfigured "deck geometry" and modernised sail plan.  Performance-wise, Pink Gin's bowsprit will be extended by 1.5 metres, and her single, fixed backstay will be replaced by running backstays; the ergonomics and style of the helm stations will also be modernised and new Harken winches will be installed, ensuring she is ready to maintain her position on the regatta circuit. The cabin configuration will also see some improvements, with a restyled owner's cabin. Pink Gin IV is due to splash again in May 2024.

Nuri’s new upgrades

A year after her initial launch in 2021 as RJ, t he 40.5-metre Cantiere dell Marche Nuri checked in to Pendennis’ Vilanova site for an overhaul courtesy of Boutsen Design . Designed to be a “modern spin on an explorer vessel”, Nuri – meaning “world” in Korean – now has a new look to match her new name, with a calm, tawny theme with coffee-coloured leather upholstery on the interior and touches of blue on the exterior.

As well as cosmetic changes, the team also added a spa pool with bar-stool seating, a social space with a television screen, sofa seating and alfresco dining on the sundeck, putting her in a premium position for her next charter season with Y.CO. For those more eco-conscious guests, the owner has also committed to making carbon compensation payments for clean energy projects supported by RMI at no extra cost to the charterer.

Cetacea’s technical differences

A short five-month timeframe beginning in February 2023 was all the Roscioli Shipyard in Fort Lauderdale needed to take years off the classic 40.3-metre Feadship Cetacea . The yard drilled deep into the yacht’s engine room, reconditioning the entire driveline, completing a full-electric assessment and, overhauling the stabilisers and installing a new IMO-approved sewage treatment system. Cetacea’s exterior paint was also reconditioned, and she received an upgrade to her entertainment system. Classic lines and vintage charm remain for the new buyer who took the reigns as of October this year, with an all-together younger and healthier heart.

All eyes on Lady Jade’s aft

The 41-metre Inace explorer Lade Jade completed a nine-month refit at Lusben’s repair yard in Viareggio. After an additional six metres of length was added to her exterior decks in 2018 by Alia Yachts, this most recent refit project focussed mainly on her stern, optimising extra space by reducing the size of the quarter boards to give the aft cockpit a more open feel. The ceiling on the flybridge was also extended by a metre, providing better weather coverage. Lady Jade also benefitted from a fresh lick of paint, returning her to her original midnight blue, as opposed to white.

Concentrated efforts for Isabell Princess of the Seas

The 63.7-metre Codecasa Isabell Princess of the Seas ( ex- Bash ) checked out of a refit at Croatian shipyard Capax earlier this year. Around €9.5 million worth of upgrades were funnelled into the bridge deck, main deck and master cabin, giving her a more modern look while still retaining her Italian style and classic heritage. To ensure she hits 2023 standards, she also underwent various technical upgrades with new safety systems, audio-visual systems and communication equipment. The yacht has a long legacy, previously owned by the Fayads and playing host to Lady Diana. With her new lease of life, she was snatched up in June this year by a new owner who can now reap the benefits of this refit. Isabell Princess of the Seas is managed for charter by Burgess from €290,000 per week.

Catch released with a new look

A “no expense spared” 10-month refit at Feadship’s Amsterdam shipyard has left the all-aluminium 26.6-metre sportfisher Catch in pristine condition. Originally built by Feadship in 1984, she returned to her home shipyard at the end of 2022 after a change in ownership. She was initially delivered as part of Feadship’s series of Gallant Lady yachts but was completely refurbished in 2005 after a 15-month refit. This most recent refit saw a full repaint, new teak decking on the foredeck, new teak caprail aft, revarnishing of all exterior teak, new veneer on the main deck aft, new awning on the foredeck and technical maintenance and upgrades were made to the LED lighting system. Meanwhile, inside, an additional crew cabin was configured to accommodate four crew members.

Paintjobs for Apogee

Amico’s Genoa site has been busy with the 10-month refit of the 62-metre Apogee. The Codecasa yacht was repainted from bow to stern, and her teak decks were replaced and levelled, aiming to keep her one of the charter fleet’s favourites. All stainless-steel applications and components were polished, exterior upholstery, cushion covers, and awnings were renewed, external tables and furniture were revarnished, while anchor chains and external marbles were replaced. The Limo and jet tenders were also fully refurbished and received paintjobs.

From built-in storage solutions and bespoke joinery, to interior redesigns and galley refits, our experienced boatbuilders can help you to transform the interior of your yacht. Our workshops incorporate a 150m2 well equipped woodmill.

Composite repair work requires expert knowledge and skill to ensure a seamless finish. With a dedicated laminating workshop our team can accommodate a wide range of gelcoat work ranging from full structural reconstruction to cosmetic hull and deck work, for both GRP and carbon.

Slamming, grounding, over-stressing a hull in rough conditions, and hard racing can all cause damage to the inner keel matrix. The keel, keel bolts and matrix should be inspected annually to identify possible areas of de-bonding or areas of damage. In the event of damage being identified, as a professional repair yard, we can assist with a structural repair to meet your surveyors specification.

Osmosis is usually identified by the surface of a boat's hull starting to blister; to avoid this occurring you may consider protecting your hull with our anti-osmosis gel shield and epoxy coating. If it's too late for a preventive approach, then we offer an extensive repair treatment.

Behind the Scenes: The Refit Process from Start to Finish

Cruising the seas is an irresistible realm of luxury and adventure, where the opulent vessels of today embark on journeys that traverse endless horizons. Yet, concealed from the casual observer, lies a remarkable transformational process at the heart of these maritime icons — the refit process. This process is nothing short of an art form, rejuvenating boats, and elevating them to new heights in performance, aesthetics, and functionality.

Boat refits are the silent symphonies of transformation, where vessels are reborn and their stories are rewritten. Behind the scenes, hidden from the prying eyes of onlookers, skilled artisans, naval architects, engineers, and visionary owners come together to breathe new life into these nautical beauties. With meticulous planning and craftsmanship, they ensure that every vessel, from the gracefully sleek to the imposingly grand, remains at the zenith of maritime excellence.

In this comprehensive exploration, we embark on a journey through the captivating world of refits, where every phase of the process is a testament to human ingenuity and dedication. From the initial spark of inspiration to the final unveiling of a rejuvenated vessel, we uncover the intricacies, craftsmanship, and sheer artistry that transform aging boats into modern masterpieces. Join us as we lift the curtain on the fascinating journey that turns dreams into reality upon the azure canvas of the open sea.

1. The Vision and Planning Stage

A boat refit commences with a vision, often stemming from the owner’s desires and needs. Owners collaborate closely with experienced refit specialists, sharing their goals for the vessel. During this stage, a comprehensive plan is laid out, covering everything from technical enhancements to interior design changes. Every detail is meticulously considered, ensuring the refit aligns with the owner’s vision.

2. The Inspection and Assessment

Before any work begins, the boat undergoes a thorough inspection and assessment. This step is akin to a health check for the vessel. Engineers, naval architects, and marine technicians meticulously examine the boat’s structure, systems, and components. They identify areas that require attention, from mechanical systems and engines to the integrity of the hull. This assessment serves as the foundation upon which the entire refit project is built.

3. The Design and Conceptualization

Following the assessment, the design phase takes center stage. Interior designers, naval architects, and engineers collaborate to bring the owner’s vision to life. Innovative design concepts, materials, and technologies are explored to optimize both aesthetics and functionality. Detailed plans are developed, covering every aspect of the refit, from cabin layouts to exterior styling.

Following the assessment, the design phase takes center stage. Interior designers, naval architects, and engineers collaborate to bring the owner's vision to life.

4. The Deconstruction and Stripping

With design plans in hand, the vessel enters the deconstruction phase. This stage involves carefully stripping the vessel down to its core. Old components and materials are removed with precision, making way for the new enhancements. This phase is akin to a meticulous surgical operation, requiring skill and care.

5. Technical and Mechanical Upgrades

At the heart of the refit lies technical and mechanical upgrades. Engines are overhauled or replaced with more efficient models, propulsion systems are modernized with the help of Seakeeper, and navigation equipment is updated. The vessel is equipped with state-of-the-art technology to ensure it operates at peak performance. This phase involves precise engineering and a commitment to enhancing the boat’s capabilities.

6. Interior Refurbishment

Simultaneously, the interior spaces undergo a transformative refurbishment. Every detail, from luxurious staterooms and salons to galleys and entertainment areas, is meticulously attended to. The goal is to create an environment that balances comfort, functionality, and aesthetics. Skilled craftsmen and designers work tirelessly to bring the owner’s interior design dreams to fruition.

The interior spaces undergo a transformative refurbishment.

7. Exterior Enhancements

The vessel’s exterior is not overlooked. Paint and coatings are refreshed to restore the vessel’s gleaming appearance. Hulls are polished to perfection. Exterior spaces such as decks and lounges are redesigned to maximize usability and visual appeal. This phase ensures that the boat’s exterior matches the renewed elegance of its interior.

8. Rigorous Testing

Before the boat returns to the water, it undergoes rigorous testing. Every system is tested exhaustively, engines are run extensively, and every component is checked for proper functionality. Safety and performance are paramount during this phase, ensuring that the boat operates seamlessly upon completion.

9. Sea Trials

Sea trials provide the ultimate assessment of a refit’s success. The boat embarks on test voyages to ensure that all systems perform flawlessly. Owners and refit specialists closely monitor the vessel’s performance, making necessary adjustments as needed. These trials guarantee that the boat not only meets but exceeds the owner’s expectations in real-world conditions.

10. Final Touches and Delivery

Once sea trials are successfully completed, the final touches are added. Every detail is meticulously inspected to ensure perfection and also detailed immaculately. The boat is then delivered to its owner, marking the culmination of months of hard work and dedication. This final phase is the realization of the owner’s vision, and the boat is ready to grace the seas once more in renewed splendor.

The refit process is a harmonious symphony of vision, precision, and innovation. Behind the scenes, skilled professionals collaborate to breathe new life into vessels, ensuring they continue to grace the seas with beauty, performance, and luxury. Whether you’re embarking on your own refit journey or simply admiring these magnificent vessels from afar, understanding the meticulous process behind the scenes is a testament to human ingenuity and the enduring allure of the open waters.

Yacht Refit: A Guide

Yacht refit guide by yacht experts Worth Avenue Yachts

Yacht ownership is a great pleasure, but these magnificent vessels also require a great deal of upkeep, with regular periods in the yard required for yacht refit or maintenance. Whether conducting a major overhaul or just making a few cosmetic and systems updates, a yacht refit is a large undertaking, requiring excellent scheduling and budgeting, as well as excellent management of participating crew and contractors.

Finding a highly experienced, professionally run shipyard will go a long way towards heading off costly delays or possible conflict between the yacht and the shipyard, but there’s a great deal the captain and crew can do to ensure a successful, speedy yacht refit yard period.

1. Once the captain and crew have drawn up an extremely thorough yacht refit yard work list, submit the work list to numerous shipyards for quotes. Be wary of jumping on the cheapest quote, drill down into why the quote is lower. Ask around for shipyard recommendations, and be quick to note if the shipyard quote process has any errors, is revised numerous times, or simply doesn’t reflect good customer service.

2. The process must be organized by a strong project manager who is there from the start to the finish of the yard period. This is most often the captain, but can also be a trusted external project manager, and the yacht management company may also be involved. The yacht’s engineer is also heavily involved in the shipyard project management, normally holding the 2IC role onboard. The shipyard will also assign their own project manager to collaborate with the yacht’s designated person throughout the yacht’s refit.

3. Budgeting is of extreme importance. Yacht refit budget overruns are common during shipyard periods – partly due to unknown faults being uncovered during the work, but also due to poor time management or installation problems and delays. Work should be meticulously budgeted, with a running total with breakdowns to indicate where the budget has blown out (and where possible efficiencies could be gained.)

4. Shipyard insurance is imperative. The contract details must be rock-solid to apportion where liability falls for lateness, budget overruns, or any damage caused in the shipyard. Be sure to check for conditions involving ‘hot work’ such as welding, as some policies do not cover this.

5. Fires have occasionally been known to happen in shipyards due to the nature of the work, so ensure that the shipyard’s firefighting capabilities are top-notch, carry out crew fire drills extremely regularly, and insist on crew vigilance and a 24/7 watch schedule throughout the yacht refit.

6. Yacht refits can run over-time due to unexpected complications, so be aware of this when planning any charter bookings, yacht transport, or boss trips around this time.

7. Organize your crew wisely during the shipyard time. Shipyard periods exert different demands on different crew departments. For the engineers, it’s generally their busiest time of the year, while the interior team is largely responsible for protecting the yacht from damage during the refit and doing stock takes etc, and therefore has more downtime. There is often time for chefs, deckhands, and stewardesses to take vacation during a shipyard period, or enroll in professional courses. Your shipyard project manager will generally be able to tell you how many crew will be required to assist with the work being carried out by their team onboard. However, bear in mind that shipyard staff will not be willing to oversee the work of private contractors who don’t work for them— that must be done by your crew.

8. Have the contractor and dayworker admission process streamlined for your yacht refit. A common delay in shipyards is in the mornings, when dayworkers and external contractors can get held up at the gate because they aren’t listed on the day’s admissions. Have all of this organized before time, as well as contracts ready for the dayworkers to sign.

9. Get to know the shipyard where your yacht is being refit. From building good relationships with the shipyard staff to knowing the facilities, emergency services and security provisions of the yard, the better informed you are, the better your yard period will be. By choosing the right shipyard and managing the yard period well, your yacht will be back on the water on time, on budget, and even more beautiful than ever.

By choosing the right shipyard and yacht brokerage to manage the yard period well; your yacht will be back on the water on time, on budget, and even more beautiful than ever.

Yacht Refit Guide: Making Your Pre-Owned Oyster Your Own

Oyster Yacht Refurbishment Haul Out

If you’ve just bought or are considering buying one of our pre-owned sailing yachts for sale, the first thing on your mind will likely be getting aboard and starting your adventure. However, just as each person has their unique preferences about home design, each yacht owner wants their yacht to suit their personal tastes. At Oyster, we have an extensive yacht refit department with capabilities to make your brokerage sailing yacht your own. Below, we run through the refit process, yard locations, what can be changed and the ‘Oyster difference’.

The oyster yacht refit process: step by step.

From the moment you get in touch to talk about yacht refurbishment we are by your side, and we will help you every step along the way. The yacht refit process generally goes as follows:

  • You reach out to Oyster Yachts Palma, our primary European sailboat upgrade centre. Operations Manager of Oyster Yachts Palma, Mark Durham meets with you to discuss what you would like to have done.
  • Based on this discussion, Mark assigns one of the three Project Managers (PMs) to oversee the refit, with each PM offering their own specialist skills:

Steve Colley

Joined Oyster Palma S.L. as Service Manager in 2017 having previously managed Oyster Service & Refit Southampton since 2011. Steve has managed numerous major refit and repair contracts as well as overseeing warranty works in the UK, Spain and the Caribbean.

Hamish Burgess-Simpson

A sailor come ashore who has lived, sailed and worked on both sides of the Atlantic, the Caribbean, Indian and Pacific Oceans, and the Mediterranean – focusing on a wide range of disciplines over the years. In the past 15 years, Hamish has primarily concentrated on yacht refit and new-build project management, and for the majority of his maritime career, he has sailed and worked on Oyster yachts.

Pierre Oberon

Recently joined Oyster having run his own yacht maintenance company in Palma for 15 years, Pierre has considerable experience of the entire yacht refurbishment process. He has worked in many areas of the marine industry; as a sailor, service manager, and workshop manager, project managing several refits of motor and sailing yachts, and as director of two service companies and a charter base over the last 34 years. Pierre is fluent in English, Spanish, French, with a comfortable understanding of German.

  • The PM meets with you and talks through your ideas and requirements, bringing in the relevant members of the Oyster team to advise on pricing and timescales. They look at your budget and divide your wish-list as necessary paying careful attention to what is most important to you.
  • The PM schedules in the necessary work, keeping the majority of this in-house with our expert professionals. If anything is subcontracted, such as upholstery or rigging, the PM will oversee the work to ensure it is completed to Oyster standards, providing you with warranty and peace of mind. We will provide a trustworthy and objective eye, sharing our years of knowledge while at the same time keeping you up-to-date. Oyster’s seal of approval on these works will help boost the resale value of your yacht.
  • You receive regular updates from the PM. If Oyster’s team finds anything that would benefit from being serviced while onboard, the PM will contact you to see whether you want to proceed.

WHERE CAN I BOOK AN OYSTER REFIT?

  • Our yacht refit team in Palma are insured to work in any local yard, meaning we can be flexible to your needs and preferences.
  • Our Oyster representative in Barcelona can support you there, offering advice on the best local yard for your projects and managing any refurbishment through.
  • If you’re in the U.S., Oyster Yachts Newport offers everything from light maintenance to intensive sailboat upgrades.
  • In the UK we have Oyster Service Centres in Southampton and Ipswich, which offer a broad range of services from yacht refurbishment through to annual maintenance.

WHAT CAN I CHANGE TO MAKE MY BROKERAGE YACHT FEEL LIKE HOME?

Yacht refurbishment can completely transform a vessel, making it almost unrecognisable. Other than impossible tasks such as moving structural bulkheads or changing the type/size of the yacht, the world is your Oyster.

Below are some of the most common sailboat upgrades that will make a brokerage yacht feel like your own:

  • Upholstery: This is the most popular way of personalising a yacht, allowing you to implement your taste in every little detail.
  • Canvas work: Again, this adds a personal touch.
  • AV system upgrade. This will depend on how high-tech you are, and what you will spend time doing on your yacht.
  • Re-configuration of cabins: In some cases we have been able to change the cabin configuration to fit your family, perhaps adding bunk beds and games consoles for a kids cabin, or making one of the smaller cabins next to the owner’s suite into a cot room for very young children.

THE ‘OYSTER DIFFERENCE’

If you are planning on having your yacht refit, your first step should be to get in touch with our  Oyster sailing services  team. We know our boats inside out and are best equipped to refurbish your yacht, with countless hours of build experience under our belts.

Not only does an Oyster refit guarantee you the best possible quality, but if you are planning to sell your luxury sailing yacht at some point in the future, her resale value will be boosted by the fact that your works have been managed by Oyster’s trusted team. Get in touch today to set your project in motion.
