Vintage San Diego: Welcome to the Club

San Diego Yacht Club was founded in 1886 by five men who’d realized that the local bay was a great place for boating. Today the club is one of the most prestigious yacht clubs in the world, known for producing some of sailing’s top talent. Its first clubhouse stood at the tip of Point Loma on Ballast Point. In 1905, SDYC merged with the Corinthian Yacht Club, whose headquarters were downtown between B and C streets.

Years later, the clubhouse, which had moved into an old ferryboat named Silvergate , relocated across the bay to Coronado, near the ferry landing. Eventually a proper clubhouse, pictured above, was constructed. On January 14, 1934, at the break of dawn, the building was loaded onto two barges and towed across the channel from Coronado to Point Loma. It was maneuvered into place on pilings during high tide. This photo, taken 80 years ago, shows the clubhouse in its current and permanent location at the foot of Talbot Street in Point Loma. SDYC built a new clubhouse in 1963 that, with the exception of a few updates, is the structure that remains today.

The club has evolved in different ways over the years. Women did not become regular members until the 1930s. In 1928, Joe Jessop started the Junior Program, which is considered the best in the country according to a survey taken by fellow yacht clubs. The club hosts regattas about 46 weekends per year. From May 24 to June 3 it will host the College Sailing National Championship, welcoming young sailors from across the country. Main up!

About Southwestern Yacht Club

SWYC has an unmatched location in a beautiful Point Loma residential area within the Shelter Island Yacht Basin.  There are nearby walking trails, restaurants and boating services, plus quick access to San Diego Bay and the Pacific Ocean from our docks.  With incredible Point Loma and San Diego Bay vistas, SWYC also boasts a beautiful, state-of-the-art yachting clubhouse and facilities which were refurbished in 2010.

Southwestern Yacht Club believes in giving back to the community. The Benefit on the Bay Events (Gala, Race with post-race BBQ, and Anglers Tournament) are annual fundraising events with all proceeds benefiting a worthy San Diego foundation. SWYC is proud to support several community events including the Junior Foundation (providing scholarships for youth sailing programs), the White Sea Bass Release Project and other charitable programs.

Great food, great atmosphere.

Lovely venue. The restrooms are 5 star like a nice hotel. Banquet food is ok. Nice location.

I just had a wonderful dinner engagement for work at this club; the service was great and the food was outstanding. Everyone of my colleagues and Customers felt that the ambiance, food and service was top notch. The club has a wonderful view of the inside bay of Shelter Island, and another out towards the harbor. The setting is casual and the members were very welcoming to my guests. It was a wonderful experience. For the food we got, the price was excellent. This is a great place to go, especially for an event. You do have to have a sponsor if you are not a member, but the front office works that out for you. No reasonable event gets turned done. Ask for Celeste or Jill; they will work you through the process.

We joined this yacht club after meeting some of the wonderful people that are members. The building is brand new and beautiful. They have new docks, a new bar and galley, and the staff is friendly and accommodating. SGYC has the best view from any yacht cub in San Diego, and the location is easy and central if you are a Point Loma resident.
