hatteras yacht gauges

Looking for advice on replacement gauges for early 1980's 53 FBMY. The originals on the bridge are faded and almost illegible, so replacement is necessary. I think OEM were manufactured by AC (?) and I believe voltage is 12 DC from the bridge converter. Are any current manufacturers compatible with lower station or is replacement of both stations required? Digital could be an option here I suppose. Any experience in this or suggestions please.

Re: Replacement Gauges

I just replaced a few on my 79 53' MY. You will have to replace the upper and lower gauges together. You will also have to replace the sending unit as well. On the original equipment dual station gauges the gauges were were set up for dual gauges by AC and used a standard sending unit. On the new gauges the gauges are standard and the sending unit is configured for dual gauges. On mine they were 12 volts power from the inverter. You can't get the original AC gauges. The closest you can come to appearance is Stewart Warner. You can get the Stewart Warner gauges and dual senders from Sams'. Give them a call and they will walk you through the part numbers you need. 1990 Hatteras 41 Convertible

Of the 41' Hatteras convertible models built in this model's run from 1986 to 1991, this hull has many of the preferred options available including the 535hp 6v92 which allow a reasonable 25 knot cruising speed and solid sea keeping qualities.  This layout with the galley up and forward to starboard makes for more comfortable salon seating.  Hatteras teak interiors had set the standard for all convertible builders during this time period.  The walk-around double berth forward with head entry door is comfortable and accommodating.  A couple of closets and several large drawers afford good storage for staying aboard.  The guest stateroom has upper lower berths and a nice closet also.  All three berths have new mattresses.

Set up for cruising or fishing, there is a walk-through transom door to a fiberglass non-skid cockpit deck and retractable cockpit shade.  For fishing days, there is a teak 4-rod Release rocket launcher and just drop down the pair of double-spreader Rupp outriggers.  There is an underdeck fish box and tackle center forward with cockpit sink.  Safe passage to the foredeck is assisted by her full bow and deckhouse railings.  There is a practical anchoring system with rebuilt electric windlass, fiberglass pulpit with CQR 45-pound anchor and rode.

The previous boat owner had primarily enjoyed his boat when anchoring up for the weekend.  Since his destinations were usually short distances, the main engines have remarkably low hours (791 per hour meter).  The starboard motor has had a reported overhaul.  The Onan generator has higher hours due to its operating through most of the anchored times and in 2021 the power end of the genset was rebuilt.  Although somewhat lightly equipped this Hatteras, with its extensive updating over the past 18 months, could easily become a great choice for a cruising couple or small family.  Details of the upgrade period are stated more completely on the following spec sheet.

Entering the salon from the boat cockpit up two steps through the hinged door with window, the open deckhouse area has a long settee the full length of the portside and L-shaped settee to the starboard side aft.  Just ahead is the galley area with wood-look Formica countertop, a Magic Chef under counter refrigerator/freezer (new), a two-burner electric stovetop, and above a Sharp Carousel microwave/convection oven.  The countertop lifts up outboard hiding a brushed stainless basin sink with new faucet, soap dispenser, plus a three-bottle bar storage compartment.  The lower cabinet contains 4 drawers and an under the sink cabinet.  Above next to the microwave is a tambour sliding door with storage shelves and above three hinged storage compartments. The windows are treated with roll down natural woven wood shades. The side deckhouse window can slide open and the tracks have been cleaned and exterior of the frames painted.  The salon has a digital A/C thermostat by the entry door.  To the portside forward is a teak sliding door cabinet which formerly housed a TV.  This space has now been used for a new Dometic salon A/C unit with turbo fan blower.  There is still room to possibly add a flat panel TV if desired.  The outboard sides of the salon have soffits with down spot lighting which are controlled on a dimmer switch.  Both modular settees are new and covered with a light gray ultra-suede, plus there is storage beneath each cushion.  The new bound-edge textured carpeting is a sand color.  Center companionway steps lead down forward to the staterooms.

At the base of the steps to starboard is the  Guest stateroom  with upper-lower twin berths with reading lights and teak bed rails.  A hull side opening portlight (opaque) gives some natural lighting and ventilation if needed.  A good-sized, full-length teak closet is forward, drawers beneath the lower bunk, a full-length mirror on the back of the teak door, and a digital thermostat for the new A/C unit.  There are off-white vinyl wallcoverings and a carpeted sole.

Across the hall is the teak entry door to the  Head , with white solid surface vanity top and molded sink with new faucet.  The outboard above the counter is all mirror with a slide opening medicine cabinet.  The toilet is a brand new fresh water Techma and there is a holding tank level indicator with a key-lock for security of the empty tank operation.   A switch for an exhaust fan is on the mirror just above.  A separate shower compartment with clear plexiglass framed with aluminum has a molded seat, opening hullside (opaque) portlight, and new wand style shower fixture.  There is a toilet operation panel and below a holding tank level indicator unit with key and power button (all new).  New Amtico laminate teak and holly sole and a second door which leads into the master stateroom.

All the way forward is the  Master Stateroom  with teak cabinetry, closets, doors, bed rails, and trim.  A walk-around, centerline, queen berth has a new mattress. The newly re-upholstered headboard and side panels are done in an Ivory padded vinyl.  There are bedstands to either side of the bed.  Above the forward bulkhead is mirrored with a framed print in the center mounted on the door which opens into the anchor locker.  An opening overhead deck hatch (solid) can provide ventilation or emergency egress if needed, plus two hull side opening portlights (opaque) to either side.  Two drawers and a lower cabinet are on both sides of the berth and a teak hanging lockers are on both sides aft as well.  A small TV cabinet is above on the starboard side and on the shelf to the portside is a decorative 110v table lamp nearby the A/C digital thermostat.  This stateroom also has a dedicated, new Dometic reverse-cycle A/C unit.  The sole is carpeted on the stateroom level with new Berber and there is a private entry door to the head.

All three mattresses are new with Sunbrella covers on the bunk mattresses.  All the carpeting throughout the vessel is new.  Most of the 12v DC lighting has been replaced with LEDs.  With the new A/C systems and ducting, replacement of all plumbing and head hoses, plus overall refreshing of all softgoods - this boat has virtually no odors or issues that are common in Hatteras vessel of this era.

Full Chapter One

  • Hatteras Yachts

by David Pascoe

A long with Bertram and Hinckley, Hatteras has the distinction of being one of the first three production fiberglass boat builders to start up in around 1960. Oddly enough all three survive today, although Bertram may yet go by the wayside. The company was started in 1959 by North Carolina knitting mill owner Willis Slane who, as word has it, just wanted to build a good strong boat for himself for fishing the outer banks. What followed is one of the unparalleled success stories of the fiberglass boat building industry.

Oddly enough, of the three major startups in around 1960 - Bertram, Hinckely and Hatteras - the former are know for producing boat hulls that almost never blister. Hatteras should have applied for a patent on the blistering process, for they were one of the worst offenders. Most likely this is because Hatteras has always painted their boats and has used low quality gelcoats that are prone to blistering, as well as lower quality resins, for gel coat alone does not account for the problem.

For the most part, Hatteras built balsa cored boats. In earlier years, up through about 1980, the hulls were solid glass, and then cored hull sides appeared. Decks and house tops have always been balsa cored. In fact, were it not for Hatteras, Baltec would probably not be in business today. If you want to know how good balsa is as a core material, try to find a Hatteras with a core problem. Out of thousands of boats produced, there are only a few. And speaking of balsa, if you've ever noticed that Hatteras yachts are notably quieter inside than most others, that's because of the wonderful acoustic properties of balsa.

When it comes to building good quality, consistent and reasonably priced motor yachts, no one had been able to hold a candle to Hatteras. Unlike Bertram, Hatteras recognized that wives often controlled the checkbook in the family, and didn't make the mistake of forgetting this important marketing factor like Bertram did. Thus, when the recession of '89 struck, Hatteras was at least poised to survive it, whereas Bertram had locked themselves into the sport fishing market exclusively, with their ugly formica interiors, and manly appointments. Thus, they went down with the end of the free-spending era of the 1980's. But were it not for the parent company's deep pockets, even Hatteras probably wouldn't have survived, for large boat sales were almost nonexistent for three long years.

Yet Hatteras has since abandoned a major part of the market that they had filled for so long, the medium size sport fisherman and motor yachts of a type that was renowned for their sea keeping abilities, having been designed by the famous designer Jack Hargrave. Two prominent examples of which are the 45 Convertible and 43 motor yacht. Today, the smallest boat they make is a fifty footer priced at well over one million dollars. And with Bertram not gaining much attention in the mid size range either, the days when we had a few good quality, rugged offshore type boats to choose from are over. All we are left with is an aging fleet of older Hatterai and Bertrams. The Bertram fleet once consisted of 21, 25, 26, 28, 30, 31, 33, 35, 37, 38, 42, 43, and 46 foot models. All that's left is are outrageously priced 36 and 39 footers which are rarely seen on the waterfront these days.

Unfortunately, no one has rushed in to fill the void created by the withdrawal of these two companies. Oh, sure a few have tried, but the most recent offerings don't even come close to duplicating these legends. So why did Hatteras abandon this market? Or why isn't Bertram doing well with their three boats under 50 feet? In a word, cost and lower profit margins.

To produce boats of this quality today simply costs more than the market will bear. Plus, they probably can't compete with the lower cost price leaders since fewer and fewer people are willing to pay the freight for better quality. Boats have gotten too fancy as people demand more and more amenities, more plush interiors, more appliances, electronics and whatnot. When you add up the cost of all this, and factor in the additional cost factor of substantially higher quality structures and systems, it's not hard to see how good quality boats quickly exceed the reach of most of those who desire them.

But, there is an additional factor as well, which is that the design of a good sea boat is not amenable to the creation of the vast interior spaces that people want today. Boat owners willingly sacrifice sea keeping ability for interior space. Mom takes one look at any good sea boat and says, "But it's so small inside! That Sea Ray was twice as big." Yeah, Mom, it is. but you can't shove a wide flat surface against an oncoming wave and not end up getting splattered against a bulkhead. There's no way you're going to take a Sea Ray to sea as you would a Hatteras.  Mom doesn't want to go to sea anyway. She'd prefer to stay lashed to the dock, close to the swimming pool and tennis courts. And that's why we don't have any more 32, 34, 36, 37, 38, 53, 43, 45, 46, or 48 foot Hatterases anymore. People want floating condos, and the market will always give them what they want so long as enough of them want it. But there aren't enough people that want good sea boats.

So, until people decide either that they're tired of beating their brains out in floating condos, or get tired of staying tied to the dock, or just puttering around in protected waters, or they stop demanding the utmost in luxury, (I'm not holding my breath) the days of the middle class Hatteras are over.

Sad, but very true.

"dharma" Boat | 53' Hatteras 1978

Twin Detroit Diesel 8V 71 TI Engines

Three Stateroom Three Head Layout

September 2023 Insurance Survey Available

An economical 9.5 knot cruise burns 10 gallons.

825 Gallon Fuel Capacity

“dharma” is a 1978 Hatteras 53 Yacht Fisherman with a functional original factory cockpit. “dharma” is hull number 318 of one of the most sought after 53 Motor Yacht models by Hatteras Yachts. One noted fact about this boat is she is very much in its original condition and not drastically altered, modified, or modernized by any of the previous owners. The current knowledgeable owner has kept that in mind but enjoyed the boat for local use in Florida with his family and friends. All Detroit Diesel engine services are done by an experienced Detroit Diesel mechanic who has 35 plus years of Detroit Diesel experience. Engine Oil and Filter change was just completed in February 2024.  Maintenance and repair records, all new parts installations, etc. etc. for the past three years are documented and available upon request by potential buyers. An Insurance Survey report (September 2023) is also available.

August 2023 the boat was hauled out for running gear repairs to replace cutlas bearings, rudder shaft seals and bearings, replace all zincs and apply Petit Prop Coat on running gear. Mechanically, engines are in good running condition and the hour meter readings for Port 790 and Starboard 797. At some point in the past, engines were overhauled but the current seller does not have any records. The original Onan 15 Kw generator is not working.

For Classic Yacht Enthusiast the boat is ideal for a restoration project. Also, the desirable3 stateroom three head layout is ideal for anyone looking for a Home Away from Home to get away from the cold in the winter months. The current knowledgeable Hatteras owner has enjoyed her with his family and now ready to part with her.

Overall, the boat is in good condition but there are few items needing repair or replaced by the new buyer which includes replacing the generator. The cost of these items has been considered in setting the below market asking price. If you are looking for a Hatteras 53 Yacht Fisherman, please give me a call and I will give you an accurate description of this vessel. The boat is on land at a boat yard in Fort Lauderdale for easy inspection at the present time.

2010 Caribe 12’ (model DL 12 RIB) tender with 30HP Honda four stroke OB engine with low hours that’s on a single axel trailer with cover can be purchased separately. This tender can be towed behind the Hatteras.

Aft Cockpit

Boarding the boat from either side is a breeze. Functional all fiberglass cockpit offers easy access to the swim platform through the transom gate. Fishing, swimming, scuba diving, line handling and dinghy handling is so much easier. Traditionally a feature of sport fishing boats, motor yacht owners have discovered this versatile feature offers extra convenience and enjoyment. The swimming platform has Weaver Snap Davits for inflatable dinghy mount to swim platform. The out-board engine mount is to the port side of the cockpit. Fold-down ladder makes it easier to get in and out of the water. Underneath the cockpit floor is an extra 240-gallon fuel tank that was installed at the factory, a feature of the Yacht Fisherman for fishing enthusiast. A GFI electrical outlet is on the port side and a wash down spigot is on the starboard side.

An open Aft Deck with an overhang is nice and cozy for an evening to enjoy drinks or just relax and watch the sunset! Entry from the salon is through the double doors, two wing doors on each side give access to the side decks, access to the cockpit is with a varnished staircase. Underneath the ladder to the fly bridge is a storage unit with drawers.

The salon is very much a classic Hatteras with lots of wood, side curtains, natural light flowing from 360-degree large windows and has two side doors to the side decks for line handling or to access the bow or aft deck. On the port side aft is an icemaker, wet bar with sink, glass storage for entertainment. White leather couch on the starboard side and an accent chair and a tv cabinet on the port side (no TV). There is a 1500-watt inverter. Hi-low Cocktail/Dinning table can be move to the aft deck for aft deck dinning. 12-V Valance lights for nighttime entertainment. Factory Hatteras's have glass tanks. There was a shop in Ft Lauderdale That would extend the factory boat and added alloy tanks in the stern or cockpit then. Can you send the sales ad for the MY60 your referring to. I am always open to learn.

Sorry to have hijacked the thread. The 56MY/60MY have had aluminum fuel tanks from their inception. You can find any other information regarding the 60MY buyer’s guide on our Hatteras website. Thank you! Kindest Regards, Hatteras Yachts Customer Sales Analyst Rich

Hatteras does indeed use 1 aluminum fuel tank of 1200 gallons. They went to Aluminum because it fits where it is installed and the size is totally repeatable (no variations). It is in a very dry location and well above any bilge water areas. All of the other new Hatteras' still use fiberglass fuel tanks.

I was under the impression that all Hatteras boats used fiberglass tanks. Why is it said that an aluminum tank is only good for 15-20 years? Is it due to the tank eventually breaking away from the fiberglass holding the take in? Or some other reason? If your paying that much for a Hatteras why skimping on the fuel tank, poly holding tanks and poly water tanks. I did post what I received for Hatteras. What I got from Hatteras was that All 56MY/60MY came with aluminum fuel tanks.

Capt J that's where I was missing the issue with aluminum fuel tank. I boat on Lake Michigan no salt water here. Will be a different story when we move to Floriday. We see tanks last till someone messes up the tank with old fuel or gas.
