Boat Accident Video Helps Ozarks Officials Determine Cause Of Crash
A video taken onboard a boat which crashed on Aug. 24 in Lake Ozarks has reportedly been instrumental in helping Highway Patrol figure out the cause of the incident.
After reviewing video of the accident, which took place at the 22 mile marker, troopers determined that Marvin Carter was driving the boat too fast.
Reaching speeds as high as 70 miles per hour, the boat struck a large wave and then several more. According to reports, the impact of the waves resulted in all six passengers being thrown from their seats and sustaining minor to moderate injuries.
"We are very fortunate that none of the passengers were thrown out of the vessel. Especially since falls overboard are the most common fatality accident on a boat," Sgt. Jerry Callahan told a local CBS affiliate. "Slow down and allow yourself plenty of time to reach your destination whether in a vehicle or by boat. You need to be ready to expect higher numbers of traffic on the water and road."
Troopers say the passengers were not seated properly. Carter was reportedly arrested for careless and imprudent driving.

"I realized I was in very bad shape," says Nash, sitting gingerly in a new lounge chair in his north shore Kauai home. "I just decided to ignore everything below my waist, block it out . ... "In my mind I saw that glorious sunset from a visit here two months ago with my friends." Nash, 57, broke both legs Sept. 12. The trough of a "freak" wave sent his vessel plunging, lofting the singer into the air, then the crest of the next wave rapidly pushed the boat's deck up into the descending Nash. "I heard my leg snap; I felt it break in half," he said Saturday in his first interview since the accident. "I have to say it was an amazing sound." Nash is remarkably cheery, relaxing in his two-story home of 22 years. "I would get up, but as you can see I have a bit of a problem," said Nash, wearing a rayon aloha shirt and shorts. By Tim Ryan, Star-Bulletin With both legs broken, rocker Graham Nash had a simple message for the Kauai doctor who told him he wanted to operate. "Rock on," said Nash. According to Nash, the tibia of his left leg "snapped completely in half," and the smaller bone behind the tibia also broke. In addition, the tibia in his right leg broke, as did the ankle. Following the 4-hour surgery, orthopedic surgeon Dr. Hayato Mori at Wilcox Memorial Hospital in Lihue inserted into the left leg a titanium rod, Nash said. On the right leg, a titanium rod was used as sort of a splint against the broken bone. The rods were secured with screws, and an ankle plate was attached to his right broken ankle. "It'll be a bit hard getting through an airport metal detector," Nash joked. Here's what happened, according to Nash, who with his wife Susan and son Will, 19, were on the last day of a week-long visit to their Kauai home the day of the accident. The Nashes and 22 others were on a family excursion along the Na Pali Coast in the all-aluminum powerboat Northwind owned by friends Rick and Amy Marvin. The group left Hanalei Bay at noon, cruising to Makole -- popularly known as Treasure Beach -- near Polihale along the Na Pali for an afternoon of snorkeling. About 20 minutes into the return trip to Hanalei Bay in strong head winds and rough seas, the accident occurred. "The boat was going up and down, up and down," says Nash, who had been on the bow of the boat with buddy Billy Long. "Occasionally, we would be lifted about a foot off the deck by the boat's sudden descent into a trough." Swells had been spaced apart about 20 feet when suddenly a larger wave sucked the boat into its trough, said Long. Then the boat slammed into the crest of the next wave. The two men had been airborne about 3 feet when the boat slid into the trough, Nash said. "The impact of the deck on my legs snapped them like twigs," he said. Long, a medic during the Vietnam war, covered Nash with a blanket. Crew member Dane Smith gently held Nash's legs to prevent them from moving. Long and Smith moved Nash into a more comfortable position, while son Will and wife Susan put a pillow behind the musician's back and towels under his head. Then Nash started thinking about the sunset he had witnessed two months earlier. The boat arrived at Port Allen about 6 p.m., where the Kauai Fire Department, an ambulance from Wilcox Memorial Hospital and several taxi cabs waited. At Wilcox Memorial, Dr. Mori told Nash he wanted to operate that night to stabilize the breaks. Nash was surprised he needed surgery. "I looked into the man's eyes and I told him, "I trust you completely. Rock on.' " Nash said the doctors expect him to be walking a bit in six weeks but he might need a wheel chair for up to three months. "I plan to be walking just fine by Christmas."

All eight people involved in boat crash alive; driver arrested for boating while intoxicated
LAKE OF THE OZARKS, Mo. (KMIZ)
All eight people onboard a boat that crashed into a house at the Lake of the Ozarks are alive, according to Missouri State Highway Patrol.
Eight people were sent to the hospital after a boat crashed into a home on the Lake of the Ozarks. Missouri State Highway Patrol reported the crash happened at 11:55 p.m. Saturday at the 1.3 mile mark of the Osage Arm and a house in the 400 block of Big Bear Drive.
Ethan Leigh is a resident in the area who said his father was home during the time of the crash watching his children, and heard a loud noise when it crashed. Shortly after returning home, Leigh said he initially didn't see anything out of the ordinary in the area, but minutes later, that changed.
"There was just like a flood of ambulances and fire trucks and we saw a bunch of water patrol coming from each direction," Leigh said.
According to the crash report, Adam Ramirez, 47, was driving the boat when it ran aground and hit the home. The boat then overturned and ejected all eight passengers on board, according to the crash report. Highway Patrol said two people were home at the time of the crash, but are not injured.
Travis Coleman with Tow Boat US Lake of the Ozarks noted that being ejected from a boat when in a crash is the best case scenario. This is because the boat could roll over on you, which would ultimately cause more severe injuries.
"The best thing you can hope for is you're ejected because you don't want 15,000 or 20,000 pounds of boat to come down on top of you," Coleman said.
All passengers were taken to Lake Regional Hospital. Six of those passengers were seriously hurt and two suffered moderate injuries, according to the crash report.
Ramirez was arrested for boating while intoxicated, according to Highway Patrol. Cpl. Kyle Green said investigators are waiting for Ramirez to be released from the hospital to learn more about what led up to the crash.
Green said speeding was involved in the crash.
The eight passengers on board were not wearing life jackets and the boat was totaled, the Highway Patrol reported.
According to Coleman, crashes out on the lake are common, especially over the last two years. Coleman also noted that the cause of the crashes varies from case to case, but alcohol and how dark it is out on the water typically can play a large role.
"We see a lot of these types of groundings, usually on bare points, darker stretches of the lake, that sort of thing," Coleman said. "But not really unusual, with the enormous increase in boat traffic that we've had here over the last two years."

Boy, 15, dies in St. Petersburg boat crash
- Jack Prator Times staff
A 15-year-old boy has died after a boat crash in St. Petersburg Sunday evening.
Collin Moorefield died from his injuries in a local hospital, the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission announced Monday afternoon.
Christian Tharakan, also 15, was driving the boat when he struck a dock. The collision ejected both boys from the boat, according to the state agency.
Tharakan’s injuries are not believed to be life-threatening, authorities said.
First responders received a 911 call at 5:43 p.m. that a boat struck a dock near 4039 Bayshore Blvd. NE. in Shore Acres, said Capt. Garth Swingle, a spokesperson for St. Petersburg Fire Rescue, in a news conference Sunday night.
Tharakan was recovered from the water first, before Moorefield was found soon after by a good Samaritan and a St. Petersburg police officer, authorities said.
“I can tell you that the neighbors came to help,” Swingle said Sunday. “It was pretty heartfelt that that was happening.”
After it struck the dock, the boat came to a stop four houses down, near another dock where a bystander turned off the motor and tied up the boat.
The front of the boat, an 18-foot Key West with a single motor, sustained minor to moderate damage, Swingle said.
It was unclear if the boys were wearing life vests at the time of the crash.
Florida law requires anyone born on or after Jan. 1, 1988, to complete a boating education course and have a boating education ID card before operating a vessel with a motor of 10 horsepower or more. It was unclear Monday if either of the boys had a card.
The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission is leading the investigation of the incident and said additional information will be limited until it concludes.
“We would like to express our condolences to the Moorefield family and ask that the public give the family space during this difficult time,” said Maj. Evan Laskowski, Southwest Regional Commander for the state wildlife agency, in a news release. “As a father myself, I can only begin to imagine the pain they are experiencing right now. I want them to know we are thinking and praying for them during this time.”
