Visiting from Michigan City, Indiana Yacht Club on Lake Michigan. Took family and grandson here for dinner last night. Very friendly people, beautiful location, food was very good, drinks were generous. If I ever relocate to SD Area I would definitely look into joining this very nice club.

Was there with my family who has several slips . They left and that's when I noticed I locked my keys/phone in my car. Went to the office and said ""I locked my keys in my car can i use your phone?"" Her reply " can you ?" Family doesn't pay to get their family and friends treated like kindergartners.

CYC is one of the most family friendly clubs around. They have a learn to sail program for children & adults. The Coronado High School Sailing Team is a top contender for racing. The Junior Sailing Program is recognized as one of the best in California. They have breakfast/brunch & lunch on Saturday & Sunday with their own Chef & servers. Wednesday & Friday nights they have excellent dinners . Regular memberships, Social, Junior Flag & Junior memberships are also available. CYC IS A FUN PLACE TO BE.

"Nothing parties like a rental!" -Our Captain: experienced sailor by day, flailing drunkard by night Captain's tip: If you're part of the Yacht club you can rent boats for half price. I recommend the 32-ft. sailing kind that makes frequent stops to various cheesy harbor-side restaurant/bars.

As far as event space goes, I give this place a 4. The school I work for had a Casino Night party here and the space accommodated us well. We were able to hold a 3-member band in the bar area and a photo booth (backdrop and photo light), 7 auction tables, nearly 10 casino tables, and 4 food tables in the main area. The bathrooms were pretty clean and the drinks were amazing cheap. One thing I wasn't fond of, however, was the fact that people who were not part of our event had the opportunity to come in. It was THAT big of a deal, but I didn't appreciate the drunk guys who stole our photo booth props. The street parking isn't that terrible (as far as street parking in Coronado goes) and guests were even allowed to park inside the Yacht Club lot. Thumbs up.

This is your typical old school yacht club. My family is a member of Newport Harbor Yacht Club so we were visitors here. They were very kind to us and had good food and beer.

Coronado Yacht Club 06/08/2020

Responsive image

by Annie Holland, CHA Intern

The Coronado Yacht Club has been rebuilt and relocated three times since the beginning of the twentieth century. In 1913, the original Coronado Yacht Club was unfortunately abandoned due to World War I. After the war, Coronado residents decided to rebuild the Yacht Club so that they could once again enjoy the camaraderie of boating and fishing. The new Coronado Yacht Club was built in 1932 at the old Hotel Del Coronado boathouse. The docks were not yet built when six passionate yachtsmen began to recruit members to their exclusive up and coming club. The fees for membership at this new Yacht Club was around $10.00 which was well worth the price to keep your boat at the amazing Hotel Del Coronado. Once someone became a new member they were able to get supplies in order to build a spot for their boat. The price for wood and dock material was given out on credit so that everyone had a chance to build  their perfect slip. The original 200 members built the foundations for the perfect meeting spot for novice sailors and experienced boaters.

Although the new Yacht Club was in a great location, the club moved to the Glorietta Bay for an increase of space for their ever growing members. The current Yacht Club was built in 1946 and quickly grew into a large facility in order to house the 270 yachts and the around 80 smaller boats that were kept there. The new facility soon grew into a congregation of around 900 members by 1969 with the goal of providing members the joys of sailing and fishing in the Coronado Bay. The new location of the Yacht Club brought about mixed feelings from the community, however, due to the distance from the open ocean. Even though the ocean is eight miles away from the docks the members of the Coronado Yacht Club still enjoy the ability to keep their boats in the amazing Glorietta Bay. The Yacht Club also hosts many events in order to get the community together and celebrate holidays. One of the events the Yacht Club has  hosted is the Fourth of July celebration which includes food, fun, and an end of the night fireworks display.

Over the years there was an increase in interest in boating by younger community members. This development in interest led to the creation of a Junior Program at the club. The Junior Program provides classes and opportunities to young individuals who want to learn to sail and compete in sailing races. Sailing races are frequently held for the Junior Program at the Yacht Club as well as weekly friendly competitions for all members during the summer. The Junior Program is still alive and well today and has grown into a sport that entices many students at the local Coronado High School. Many students are able to enjoy the sport of sailing and learn from experienced sailors because of the Junior Program at the Coronado Yacht Club. The Yacht Club has brought together Coronado residents to celebrate holidays, enjoy sailing, and teach the youth the traditions of the community.

Junior sailing program makes a splash with summer classes, enroll your children in an award-winning sailing program that teaches a unique skill set and offers valuable life lessons—no yacht club membership necessary, carrie keyes , neighbor.

Coronado Yacht Club Junior Program coach Jon Rogers knows a thing or two about sailing. With a leader who's won four world titles, eight U.S. titles, has experience with the AmericaOne Challenge, and is a former director and instructor for J World Sailing School, it’s no wonder the Coronado Yacht Club Junior Program is considered to be the best on the West Coast.

Now Rogers and his talented staff want to teach your kids to sail. Grab your life vest and read more about splash-worthy summertime classes and the varied lessons the prestigious maritime sport offers.

From rigging boats to sailing underneath the bridge over to the ferry landing for ice cream, summer classes are available for kids ages 6-18. The Scallywags course is designed for adventurous 6- and 7-year-olds and emphasizes pirate-themed fun and comfort on the water. Sabot, Laser and Adrenaline sailing classes for 8- to 18-year-olds are also offered, among others. Rogers takes advantage of the popularity of the X Games when planning courses for older kids.

Find out what's happening in Coronado with free, real-time updates from Patch.

“We’re taking a bold turn toward high-performance boats like 420s and 29ers,” he said.

Junior sailing classes are open to the public; parents need not own a boat or be a club member to enroll their children in the program.

Rogers’ message is simple.

“We pride ourselves in going sailing, rain or shine,” he said. “We like to get kids on the water instead of bombarding them with classroom time. Our curriculum is measurable—it’s not just a babysitting service.”

The drill-based program “does not take a high-pressure approach.”

Rogers’ curriculum not only teaches the principles, strategies and communication specific to boating, but also teaches valuable life lessons.

“We teach kids to be mentally under control with an ‘I can’ attitude. Sailing is a moderate-speed sport that teaches patience. Kids learn to get results at a slower pace,” Rogers said.

He also emphasizes the importance of instructing participants to be self-reliant, confident sailors. As evidence of practicing what he preaches, Rogers has won the San Diego Yachtsman of the Year Award twice, and has also received the Alonzo de Jessop Service Award and the John M. Rumsey Award.

Junior Program Director Becky Nygren agrees with Rogers’ belief that sailing offers valuable lessons.

“Sailing teaches kids they must go with the strides,” she said.

Nygren believes the sport offers kids “independence and a unique sense of freedom and ability they don’t get in most sporting programs.” Program youth also enjoy a sense of ownership; each child must care for their own boat, whether rented or owned.

This summer, make a splash with your kids and enroll them in the acclaimed Coronado Yacht Club Junior Sailing Program. For more information, visit www.juniors.coronadoyc.org or call (619) 435-0522.
