Local youth learn the ropes of sailing at annual Sail Camp

long beach yacht club sailing camp

By Toni Miles

Several local Long Beach youth have spent the summer tacking sailboats, learning to change direction when sailing upwind or at angle to the wind, and other sailing fundamentals.

It’s all part of the Long Beach Yacht Club’s (LBYC) annual Sail Camp. This year, two sessions were held – one from June 3 to June 14, and the second summer session was held from June 17 to June 28, with Race Week taking place from July 8 through 12. Sail Camps, which run five days each session, were open to local youth ages seven to seventeen, as with each year’s camps.

“This was a great year,” said Sailing Director Tom Lansford. “All of our sessions had full enrollment, and we had strong winds. It was awesome to see the harbor full of sailboats."

At the helm of this year’s Sail Camps were Head Counselor Ella Lansford and instructors Patrick Clark, Kate Lansford and Johnathan Mate, who worked closely with local youth, teaching them the fundamentals of sailing and other skills. LBYC’s Sail Camps not only teach local youth how to sail. Camp participants also swim, fish and kayak, along with several other special activities during these annual camps.

The program's goal is to create a safe, as well as fun, environment in which young people can explore the sport of sailing.

History lesson: LBYC was created back in 1929 to promote yachting and competitive sportsmanship on a world-class level — although interestingly enough the club’s first activity was to host a powerboat race. Nearly 100 years later, we also have a reputation that matches the scope and scale of our mission. Members take part in regattas, invitationals, championships, trips, and other events, and of course, access to our fleet of Catalina 37 One Design racing yachts and solings.

We’ve expanded and evolved to offer members an all-inclusive definition of what it means to be a yacht club. Our year-round calendar includes a full range of power and sailboating programs, stand-up paddleboarding, fishing trips, and travel...nearly any and every recreational activity you can enjoy on, in, and close by the water. After all, we’re ultimately here to have fun, meet some great fellow members, perhaps compete for some bragging rights…and enjoy time with family and friends at this unique private waterfront retreat. Speaking of fun, your first assignment is to look over our curated new member experiences and choose a personalized activity! CAMERON MACLAREN Yachting Director

WEEK ONE STARTS HERE

Congressional Cup LBYC’s Congressional Cup regatta is known as the “grandfather of match racing.” It’s the oldest continuously-held sailing match race event in the world, and pioneered the concept of on-water umpiring. This regatta sets the standard for top-level match racing, and the list of past winners reads like a Who’s Who of America’s Cup champions including Dennis Conner, and Ted Turner.

The crimson blazer the congressional cup trophy is accompanied by the equally sought-after crimson blazer — sailing’s equivalent to the masters green jacket in golf, and are sources of incredible pride for lbyc members and staff., lbyc burgee for those members new to sailing and the larger yacht world, a burgee is a distinguishing flag of a boating organization. the club and our members fly the lbyc burgee while under way and at anchor, day or night. by club lore, the use of a red star in our burgee is an acknowledgment to lbyc member eddie fink, who won the star class world title in 1932…although there is an extensive history that suggests the red star was in the original burgee and has remained there ever since., group fun lbyc groups offer activities for a variety of interests. as just two examples, the cruising group conducts trips all over southern california via land and sea, including a recent trip to the british virgin islands. with over 25% of members participating, our anglers group is one of the most active, featuring an annual vacation trip, travel to various tournaments, and activities for the kids, wet wednesdays formality aside, our regular wet wednesday regattas are a great way to gain sailing experience, get your sea legs back, or further hone your racing skills. we encourage everyone to come out, catch a ride on one of our catalina 37s or solings, meet fellow members…and enjoy some after-race socializing. if racing isn’t your passion, you can join the scoring team on the bridge deck or take a ride on the iconic loynes to get a glimpse into the world of race management., adult instruction our club is a leader in developmental adult sailing programs for those members with little or no sailing experience, or those who've spent time away from sailing and want to refresh their skills. introductory sailing classes are available, as well as intermediate and advanced instruction as you gain experience both sailing and racing. , junior sailing lbyc has a rich history of competitive sailors that have grown through our renowned junior sailing program. our mission is to promote and teach the sport of sailing and seamanship to the youth of the club, and our board of governance has a historic commitment to supporting our youth programs in every capacity..

CAMERON MACLAREN Yachting Director [email protected] Pro Tip:   The whole family can learn to sail in group classes or private instruction using our brand-new fleet of club solings. For experienced sailors, get your Skipper Card to go day sailing or to start racing in club regattas.

Yacht Clubs

long beach yacht club sailing camp

Long Beach Yacht Club

Long Beach Yacht Club, founded in 1929, gained international recognition through the Congressional Cup sailboat regatta. It originated with plans for a powerboat race between Long Beach and San Francisco. The race was to coincide with the San Francisco Motor Boat Show, promoting both the show and Northern California’s boating industry. Daniel M. Callis, Sr., an active Long Beach architect, played a pivotal role in establishing the club. The inaugural race covered 460 miles, from Long Beach to San Francisco, using a handicapping system. The winner received a trophy donated by Sir Thomas Lipton. Despite initial challenges, the success of this race led to the formation of the Long Beach Yacht Club.

Stories from Long Beach Yacht Club

In 1929, a group met at St. Francis Yacht Club in San Francisco, in an effort to secure support for a real Long Beach Yacht Club. Jonah Jones, Jr. convened a subsequent meeting with Long Beach businessmen interested in yachting, ultimately agreeing to form a real Long Beach Yacht Club. Richard Loynes, a renowned speedboat racer, became the first commodore. Despite the stock market crash, the new LBYC swiftly attracted 100 members, each paying $5 per year (kids paid $2.50). Within weeks, they organized a speedboat race from Long Beach to Avalon, and by February 1930, membership had grown to around 150.

In 1929, D. M. Callis became commodore at the Pacific Coast Club, attended by 125 people. Notable guests included commodores from the Catalina Island Yacht Club, California Yacht Club, and Los Angeles Yacht Club. The focus was on creating a yacht harbor in Long Beach and constructing a clubhouse. Discussions with Long Beach and Los Angeles County officials led to plans for the clubhouse once a harbor location was confirmed.

Using the Pacific Coast Club as its headquarters, discussions began with the City of Long Beach and County of Los Angeles regarding development in Alamitos Bay and plans were formulated to begin construction. Despite their efforts, Long Beach and Seal Beach agreed to construct a bridge over the San Gabriel River mouth in 1931, connecting Seal Beach to Ocean Boulevard in Long Beach. Unfortunately, this bridge restricted access for any vessels 14 feet or more in overhead clearance, hindering Alamitos Bay’s development as a significant yacht harbor for two decades.

In 1936, the first LBYC clubhouse was approved, sparking fundraising efforts and member contributions. By the start of the 1937 regatta season, the facilities were fully paid for. Located west of downtown Long Beach, the clubhouse stood a 2,000-foot stroll along a boardwalk from the shore. It featured moorings, a Star Boat dock and an anchorage area. While no boardwalk extended beyond the clubhouse, local lore suggests that young ladies enjoyed refreshing skinny dips in the secluded L-shaped end of the mooring field.

As the war years approached, LBYC faced changes. Records differ on whether the club sold or donated its first clubhouse to the Sea Scouts in 1939. However, newspaper articles indicate that the facility remained with the club until at least 1941. Despite losing the clubhouse, yachting and social activities persisted amidst the global events unfolding. World War II significantly impacted club members’ lives and boating activities. During this time, Alamitos Bay emerged as a marina and eventually became home to the Long Beach Yacht Club’s second clubhouse.

Prominent individuals associated with LBYC had been involved in Alamitos Bay’s development since the 1920s. However, the second clubhouse could only be built after protecting the bay from floods and constructing the marina. Members’ determined efforts secured an initial lease for the clubhouse site in March 1959. The lease expanded in January 1960, encompassing the clubhouse building and access to Basin 4 slips. By September 1969, the lease extended to 2020. On June 1, 1960, groundbreaking for the current clubhouse on Appian Way took place, with dedication ceremonies held on December 16, 1960. LBYC was now poised for rapid expansion and global recognition within the yachting community.

LBYC thrives on the constant activities provided for the members that include racing, yachting, fishing, diving, swimming, social programs and youth activities. The club actively participates in community outreach using Catalina 37s. Notable activities include the Marcedes Lewis Regatta, where six Boys and Girls Club teams compete. High school students from Jordan High Schools sail in The Panthers at Sea, and Boys and Girls Club kids race in the Wet Wednesday events. The Patriot Regatta draws participation from all five branches of the armed forces—Air Force, Army, Coast Guard, Marines, and Navy. Youth programming is a highlight, offering sailing and swimming lessons for little ones, swim team meets, and competitive regattas. As LBYC looks ahead, its leaders balance tradition and innovation to serve members.

Here’s what people are saying about sailing lessons with Santana Sailing

“Marc may quite possibly be the best instructor I’ve ever experienced. Not only is he extremely knowledgeable about sailing, boating, and the theory behind it all, he’s incredibly skilled at laying everything out in a clear and concise way, and being able to put things in a way that is easy to understand, take away, and use in the future. I swear I’ve learned more in his classes in a very short time than I’ve ever learned from any other teacher, in any other class, ever in my life. He’s always upbeat and willing to answer any question you might throw at him with a well thought out and knowledgeable answer based on real life experience. All that, and his classes are amazingly fun too! I’ve taken some of his classes three or more times just because of him and the cool people I meet on our adventures.

Because of Marc, I currently own my own boat and am working on sailing it around the world. I would not have the knowledge to take on a challenge like that were it not for him. Thanks Marc!!” – Jimmy C.   Read Santana Sailing’s student reviews »

We’ll Help You Reach Your Sailing Goals!

Our students are interested in exploring the world of sailing, from day sailing to cruising the world, and everything in between. Some want to be a competent mate for their sailing partner. Some want to take family and friends for day sails. Many want to gain the knowledge and skill to charter a boat for a weekend at Catalina, and others need their SLC Mediterranean Sailing License to charter in the Mediterranean. Some are acquiring their first small sailboat or stepping up to a larger monohull, and still others and prepping for that huge catamaran they want to charter in the Caribbean. And many experienced sailors want to tune their skills in specific areas. In the end, it’s all about gaining the confidence and competence to fulfill your sailing dreams.

Many of our students come to us not knowing what they don’t know. When they learn they can voyage to distant shores, anchor in a secluded cove, manage the boat, the crew, and even handle heavy weather, it feels like a little bit of magic is taking place. See our blog on The Best Way to Become a Better Sailor for a taste of how we can help.

Long Beach is the ideal Southern California sail-training venue. It’s windier, closer to Catalina, and at a better wind angle than any other SoCal harbor. Plus, we have the advantage of miles of open water for training without the congestion of the kayaks, paddle boards, Duffys and party boats. It’s simply the best place to learn.

If you want to get somewhere in the world of sailing, even if you’re not sure exactly where that is, see our sailing classes below and find out what the possibilities are. Then contact us for more info. We’re committed to helping you get from where you are to where you want to be.

Marc Hughston Chief Instructor

“Marc is a squared away sailor who immediately instills a sense of capability and confidence in his clients. One knows that the voyage will be successful. no matter what conditions prevail or what Mother Nature brings. All done with a cheerful, professional demeanor but never a sense of superiority. Would sail with him anywhere anytime as client or crew.”

Junior Sailing Program

The Seal Beach Yacht Club Sailing Foundation is entering into its 19th year. We offer spring, summer and fall programs to local communities to educate seamanship, teamwork and environmental awareness of our precious coastal resource.  In addition to offering education, we offer employment to local young adults as coaches.   The coaches are developing personal skills in communication, management and education skills for their future.

Our vision is to provide an enriching, safe and enjoyable sailing experience for youth sailors from ages 7 to 17 through recreational sailing, sailboat racing, navigation and other marine interests that will foster a lifelong appreciation for boating.

This clinic is open to all students regardless of race, gender, gender orientation, religion, national origin, and disabilities.

As an I.R.S. 501(c)(3) recognized public charity, all donations, bequests, devices, transfers or gifts are tax deductible. If you would like more information, please contact the SlBYC Sailing Foundation at [email protected] .
