Valencia: a perfect city for water sports
Enjoy the best nautical activities in Valencia
Its climate, the proximity of the urban area to the coast and easy access to beaches make Valencia a unique city for water sports. Anyone who regularly does this type of activities will be familiar with the term Valencian ‘thermal wind’, a special attribute that guarantees there is wind every day, making it something sailing buffs can rely on. This means you won't waste a second of your time, and you’ll be able to do what you're most looking forward to: enjoying your favourite sport!
Head out on the water with La Marina, the Royal Valencia Yacht Club or the Valencian Community Sailing Federation, and you’ll know why you need to come enjoy all the water-based leisure options the city and its surrounding area have to offer. How about it?
Set sail with us at Valencia’s La Marina , an area created when the port was modernized to host the 32nd America’s Cup in 2007. Today it is one of the most cutting-edge marinas in Europe, 10 minutes from the city centre. It also boasts an enticing array of culinary offerings, allowing you to enjoy a meal with a view after your time on the sea.
Water sports at Valencia's La Marina
La Marina offers a number of options: going out on a sailing boat or a motorboat, rowing, canoeing and a variety of board sports: surfing, windsurfing, paddleboarding, wingsurfing and carver skating.
At the Valencian dock, you can also hire sports equipment or a boat and take one-off lessons or a complete course. Local businesses also periodically offer SUP yoga and SUP Pilates sessions, special day trips, competitions and rides. And La Marina has clubs specializing in sports such as sport fishing, kayak fishing, diving, rowing and canoeing.

Royal Valencia Yacht Club
The Royal Valencia Yacht Club, founded in 1903, is just 10 minutes by car from Valencia's city centre. The club offers rowing, paddleboarding, kayaking, kitesurfing, windsurfing and sailing. You can also round off a day on the water with a culinary experience right there.

Market, Yacht Club & the Holy Grail in Valencia Spain
On our lay days at the first America’s Cup, we took advantage of our time off to explore. I had no idea I would see Valencia, the Valencia market, the Holy Grail and learn how not to order apricot juice. I had two invitations – in the morning Jean-Francoise invited me to the Valencia Yacht Club for breakfast, and Jason asked me to lunch and to sightsee around Valencia.
Jean-Francoise loved to get up early for the morning light. He took me to the Valencia Yacht Club to see the J Boats which are the original America’s Cup yachts. An amazing photographer he taught me so much every moment I was with him. To his credit, he made me a better photographer.
Valencia, Spain and The Holy Grail
I started with breakfast at the Valencia Yacht Club and walked around the marina to look at the boats that once raced the America’s Cup until 2013 when Larry Elis chose catamarans to race.
The morning was bright, not too hot or humid and had a delightful view of boats.
As the boats drifted waiting to approach the starting line, they sat like swans waiting to launch.
Valencia Market
After breakfast, Jean-Francoise dropped me off at the bank where I waited for Jason. He was almost on time, but, no difference because we were on a lay day. When he arrived, he had a million things to share about the America’s Cup race and the latest scuttle butt. He had so many opinions, so much news, nothing based on facts but, lots of guesses, speculations, and hearsay about the America’s Cup race.
He had a thousand opinions. Jason never asked what I did that morning or what I saw, where I went or who I was with. He just jumped into the conversation, providing play by play. We walked to the market.
The streets and balconies in Valencia Spain
Apricot Juice
As we wandered around Valencia, we stopped for a drink because Jason didn’t want to have lunch. I am always up for eating, especially in a place known for great food.
He ordered apricot juice. In the States, little cafes don’t have apricot juice. The small cafe didn’t understand a word that he was saying. The waiters were so disappointed they couldn’t help. Jason eventually gave up after 20 minutes of trying to order apricot juice and paly charades with three waiters. They didn’t know what he wanted, and he couldn’t say it in Spanish.
Travel tip: If you have a favorite thing to drink, learn how to say it in the language of the country, so you don’t become an ugly tourist.
After we had left the cafe, we went to the Valencia Market. The market is lovely and has a spectacular glass ceiling and windows that add a unique flare.
Beams Ceilings and People Everywhere
You could find just about any food here.
It is reminiscent of the markets in the Middle East and those in Italy – it is called the Moorish influence.
Valencia Cathedral & the Holy Grail
The Plaza de la Reina is Valencia’s center and one of the city’s landmarks. It has a small arched entrance where history says El Cid rode into Valencia. We saw a sign in Spanish. At first, I didn’t understand it, but it said the Holy Grail was here. I thought everyone was still looking for the Holy Grail. So, if the Holy Grail is here, I had to see it!
Jason was less interested but came along.
The story is that it was first found right at the Reconquista, in the 13th century on the site of the central mosque. The cathedral is spectacular with styles from Gothic, Baroque and Neo-Classical with three portals to areas each in its style. Here is the full story according to the church, La Catedral de Valencia .
We went to the altar and saw the Holy Grail – the light was low and I didn’t care. Perhaps I should have cared? My big camera was back in the hotel during this day trip. I was writing as part of the media team, and unfortunately not a photographer on this trip. Luckily, I got this photo as we walked up to the altar. The Holy Grail was in another small room. Patiently, we waited for our turn to enter and see it.
There is nothing like seeing the Holy Grail, in Valencia, Spain especially when you are least expecting to see it.
Finally, my turn for a photo. But it didn’t come out, Jason lost his patience and left.
Travel tip : always travel with a high speed low light camera and fast media. Bring a DSL or iPhone, or Android. You don’t want to miss a shot. (like I did)
Jason, never stood still. He is always on the move. This photo captures his spirit and his soul.
Travel tip : stand still when someone is taking your photo:)

Valencia SailBase
SailCoach set up its second base in the city of Valencia at the end of 2021, complementing operations in Malta. The city has a rich sailing history, including playing host to the 2007 America’s Cup and has become a popular training venue for Optimist (Orange Regatta), Finn (the Dinghy Academy), and ILCA sailors alike. With excellent sailing conditions afloat and extensive shore facilities at the Real Club Náutico de Valencia. Making Valencia a natural choice for SailCoach with the Mediterranean providing excellent warm-weather training all year round.
We intended that SailCoach’s Valencia SailBase would provide a “home from home” for teams wanting a base in Europe with year-round training facilities. The SailBase can offer favourable prices for long-term containers parking, giving teams a base to store equipment a day’s drive away from the heart of Europe. They can then fly from any part of the world, spending a week or two getting set up and over jetlag, et cetera, before competing on the European regatta circuit. Traditionally, the first regatta on the European circuit is Palma Majorca’s Princess Sofía Trophy. With Valencia having a twice daily ferry service to the Balearic Islands, what better starting point could there be?
Why Valencia
The city lies on the Mediterranean, so it enjoys a covetable climate with 300 sunny days, a year and an average annual temperature of 18º C. It has a worldwide renowned traditional cuisine, with over 7 km of beautiful beaches and a Mediterranean lifestyle that combines tradition and innovation, with a good quality of life and a moderate cost of living, making Valencia an exceptional city for athletes to be based.
The cost of living is yet another of the reasons why sailing athletes set sail for Valencia. Sailors will be pleasantly surprised at how little they need to spend to live the dream athletes life. This applies to everyday expenses such as shopping, eating out or going for a drink. At the same time, Valencia is a short travel distance from central Europe, making it easy to drive with all your equipment, and sailors usually have a lot. SailCoach is also renowned for its value for money at its training bases, another good reason to come to SailCoach.
Valencia is virtually flat, and there is a pervasive, ever-expanding network of cycle paths. No bike, no problem, the friendly faces at BikeAlao or Doyoubike will rent you whatever you need. There are also many natural parks not far from the city to get in touch with nature while biking. Behind the city, rolling mountains and hills make Valencia the perfect place for sailing athletes with their bikes.
Even the education is international, with the two world-renowned universities, of Valencia and the Polytechnic University offering many courses in English, with many affiliated private centres or business schools like EDEM, offering excellent connections to the international entrepreneurial ecosystem.
Getting to Valencia
The city has an extensive network of travel connections, including an airport directly connected to more than 70 international destinations such as London, Berlin, Paris, Dublin, Rome, Brussels, Lisbon, Frankfurt, etc. In addition, you can travel from Madrid in just an hour and a half by high-speed train. Apart from Valencia Airport, which is a 15-minute drive or 20-minute metro ride to Valencia’s city centre, there are two other international airports within driving distance, Castellón to the north and Alicante to the south.
There’s also a great network of roads to all major destinations, especially now that the AP 7 is toll-free. You can take this motorway to Barcelona, and then on to France. But, Valencia is primarily a port city, ranking nº1 in Spain for cargo/container traffic. It also provides easy ferry access to the Balearic Islands of Mallorca, Ibiza etc. So being this well connected also makes it ideal for sailing teams to have their European base.
Climate Data
Will be updated shortly…
Where to stay
The Valencia SailBase is located at the Real Club Náutico de Valencia, known locally as Club Náutico (if you take a taxi) in the neighbourhood of Poblats Marítims, approximately 2km along from the well-known City of Arts and Sciences. The Ilunion Aqua 3 and 4 hotels are reasonably priced and the nearest to the Valencia SailBase. Bed & Bike Marina is an apartment complex that we use from time to time, which is ideal for short stays.
There are a number of modern hostels with the nearest one to SailCoach’s Valencia SailBase being Urban Youth Hostel in the vicinity of the old America’s Cup harbour and about 20 minutes by bicycle to the SailBase. In the city centre there is Purple and Red Nest Hostels and Quart Youth Hostel both are modern and with a selection of room sizes in including twin.
Please note that we do not provide transportation between the SailBase and the hotels or apartments. However, sailors tend to take a taxi, cycle or jog between the two places.
If looking for apartment accommodation, we recommend that you stay in the neighbourhoods of Marina Playa, Camins al Grau, Poblats Marítims or Quatre Carreres. There are also some excellent deals on Airbnb for all these neighbourhoods.
Our Valencia SailBase has limited hostel-style accommodation, and you are advised to book early if you intend to stay with your small groups for short periods. Please note that priority is given to our own staff at this accommodation site.
You have access to the boat park, club changing facilities, use of a small, but well equipped gym, wifi internet and a lecture room at our Sailbase. There are five or six restaurants in the club where sailors can choose for lunch each day.

The tranquil seaside town that hosts Marina Puebla is ideal if you want to enjoy a quiet holiday by the sea. One last mention, you might find it difficult to find many English speakers around. So, if you plan on improving your Spanish, this is your chance.

Guide to Valencia
A thriving hub where Spanish tradition meets cutting-edge innovation.
Situated in southeast Spain, Valencia is a thriving metropolis known for its art, innovation and food. Though not as famous a travel destination as its counterparts Madrid and Barcelona , this port city proudly holds its own as a hub of everything that is beautiful about both traditional and modern day Spain.
Following more than two decades of investment and development, the Mediterranean city of Valencia now boasts some of the most striking architecture in Europe. A green winding ribbon of park flows through the city and on it are the fantastically futuristic buildings of the Ciudad de las Artes y las Ciencias, designed by the world-famous and locally born Santiago Calatrava. These spectacular creations offer a magnificent opera house, science museum, 3D cinema and an aquarium, with the surrounding promenades and pools perfect for riding bikes and paddle boarding.
From jazz festivals to the month-long Feria de Julio (July Fair), with so much on offer and a year-round climate, the city is host to cultural events throughout the year. The most important festival is Las Fallas which takes place each March and includes a spectacular display of huge papier-maché figures of celebrities and politicians paraded through the streets and then ceremoniously burned whilst fireworks and music blaze while locals cook vast wheels of traditional paella in the streets. It’s not for the feint of heart, but it’s an experience that will ensure your luxury yacht charter vacation is like no other.
Like many Spanish cities, Valencia is held in high regard for its impressive offering of restaurants. You’ll find an amazing variety of rice dishes, including, of course, paella, as well as fresh fish and vegetables grown on the fertile plains that surround the city. In keeping with the innovative feel, there are an array of fine dining options that take traditional Spanish cuisine and create a cutting-edge twist. Whether you want tapas or Michelin-starred, your time ashore in Valencia will be full of delicious delights.

Next week, when the 37 th Louis Vuitton America’s Cup kicks off in Barcelona with its opening ceremony, the contest that began in 1851 with a race around the Isle of Wight between the fastest British and American sloops (the yacht America won handily) will come back to Europe for the first time in 14 years.
The move to the Catalan capital from the 2021 event in New Zealand will make it more accessible to sailing fans in Europe, and even North Americans who want to view the fast, technical AC75 foiling boats in person. Barcelona has been preparing itself for a surge of spectators for the “return” of the Cup, which was held twice in Valencia, Spain, in the aughts.
The America’s Cup may be billed as “the race with no second place,” but it takes three months of racing and four events for one of five Challenger teams to win the Louis Vuitton Cup, and that winner will race Defender Emirates Team New Zealand in the America’s Cup final. The racing runs from August through October, and this year includes a first-time all-women’s America’s Cup as well as an event for the world’s best youth sailors.
Having Barcelona as a venue was a smart move, partly for the gorgeous beaches fronting the race course on the Med. But there is also the city’s magnificent architecture and sense of history as well as vibrant arts, culture and, of course, no shortage of Michelin-starred restaurants.
There are many five-star hotels in the area, but the smartest and most thrilling way to see racing is by water. The vessel options are wide-ranging—from weeklong superyacht charters to luxury suites on a cruise ships to day trips on sailboats with Michelin-starred cuisine. Many can be combined with on-land stays and even cruises to other parts of Spain as part of the itineraries.
One important note: Four zones adjoining the race course allow spectator boats. Before chartering a vessel, be sure to find out which zone the boat will operate in, because that impacts how close you are to the racing.
Here are 9 options to suit the most avid Cup aficionados or those visiting Barcelona who want to sip champagne and watch the AC75 foiling boats battle it out.
Superyacht ‘Resilience’
Edmiston is offering charters aboard the 212-foot Resilience during the America’s Cup. The ISA-built superyacht, designed by Enrico Gobbi, features a mosaic-tiled pool, circular fire pit and a BBQ for a ringside lunch. Post-race pampering comes via the steam room, sundeck jacuzzi and gym, and there’s even a self-playing Edelweiss piano and projector for evening entertainment. The vessel sleeps 12 across seven cabins. From September 16, weekly charters start at about $645,000 (€600,000).
Explora Journeys
The soon-to-be-launched Explora II looks very much like its sistership, the Explora I : onyx finishes, self-playing Steinways, on-deck Technogym bikes, a spa with a Himalayan salt room, Dunhill cigar den and a wine cellar boasting decades-old Chateau Latour. With 461 luxury suites, how was the Explora II chosen to become an America’s Cup viewing platform? The idea came from the top down.
“I love sailing and believe the Med is the most beautiful sea on earth,” Pierfrancesco Vago, executive chairman of the cruise division of MSC Group, told Robb Report during a visit aboard Explora I in Barcelona. “We thought if only our customers could also experience [the America’s Cup], we can call it the ocean state of mind.”
Explora II launches in mid-September, with itineraries planned to coincide with the different Cup events. On October 6, the vessel will be in port for the Louis Vuitton Cup Final and Puig Women’s Races. Guests can take a walk to the official race village and experience its excitement before watching the races from their suites. A 10-night journey starts from $5,210 per guest.
The Almanac Sailing Experience
Barcelona’s Almanac hotel has a romantic-gastronomic experience that offers guests front-row seats on a Jeanneau Sun Odyssey 45 sailboat with a capacity for 10 guests. Besides the racing, the package includes two nights at the hotel. The boat comes with the hotel’s branded slippers and Jimmy Boyd bespoke amenities. Enjoy a selection of customized Cava Bellinis from the pop-up bar. Chefs from the hotels’ restaurant will also serve up shrimp salad and fennel ceviche paired with organic Spanish wines. The boat can be chartered every Saturday from August 31 to October 26. The Louis Vuitton Cup round-robin starts on August 29 and lasts through Sept. 8. There’s also the Puig Women’s Race (first all-female America’s Cup in its 171-year history) and, of course, the America’s Cup finals in October. Prices start at $2,940 per couple.
Superyacht ‘C’
For a majestic week-long cruise that incorporates America’s Cup summer races and possible side itineraries in Costa Dorada, Sitges and Formentera, Camper & Nicholsons’ expansive 177-ft C is the flashy option, defined by Minotti furniture, lacquered panels and a hamman. It also sleeps 12 in six cabins that feature a master and two VIP suites. Its chase boat also offers a great opportunity for side trips. Weekly charters from Sept. 18-October 31 run from about $513,000 or €400,000.
Sailing Yacht ‘Imagine’
UK adventure specialists Pelorus offer a private seat on an elegant sailing boat seeped in America’s Cup history. Built in New Zealand by Alloy Yachts, Imagine is a 110-footer that served as an official viewing platform for the America’s Cup in Auckland, but it has also completed three global circumnavigations. Beyond its sailing chops, it’s a beautiful vessel, with a blonde, teak-lined deck, large salon and dining area, and three cabins for sleeping seven guests. It will be available from October 12 for the America’s Cup final. Pelorus is also offering to bookend the week with trips to Majorca and Ibiza. About $101,000 (£79,121)
Superyacht ‘Diane’
Also available from Edmiston, the 141-ft Diane can accommodate 10 guests in five staterooms for the week. The interior is all about soft hues, featuring cream leather and white marble, boasting a bar and plenty of outdoor seating for watching the races. For the non-race legs, guests can take to the water via the large beach club, complete with seabobs and wakeboards. It has a Balearics license, making a hop to Ibiza or Majorca a possibility. Weekly charter rates from September 23 run about $150,000 per week (€140,000)
Black Tomato Cup Package
Incorporating a city-stay, Black Tomato’s America’s Cup getaway includes a day’s private day charter to view the race, plus five nights at the Mandarin Oriental as well as visiting the regatta course and different bases of the America’s Cup teams for an insider’s look at the operations and technology. As a dayboat, its Bali Yacht Saxador 400 GTO can accommodate 11 guests. It sets sail from Port Olympic, giving guests a sweeping view of the city on one side and the regatta course on the other. The boat has access to the blue area (for preferred charter boats) on the front line. From $12,750 per person, based on two people.
Superyacht ‘Quasar’
Camper & Nicholsons recently introduced the 153-foot Quasar to the charter market and what a great way to end the Med season than by viewing the America’s Cup. It has six cabins (including two master suites) that can accommodate 12 guests, along excellent outdoor seating, an upper salon that joins the aft deck area for viewing the races or dining al-fresco. The beach club has a large selection of water toys. Visits to scenic Med ports around Barcelona are also possible on the week’s charter, which start at about $232,000 (€210,000).
Superyacht ‘Kiawah’
For front row seats on day charters in the blue zone (the third-closest area to the races), official charter partner ac37 Sailcharters offers different types of vessels and packages. The 110-foot Kiawah features a cocktail lunch on board, a specialized lecture from an expert sailor, and an AV system to follow the race in real time. From August 22 through October 11, daily rates are about $34,000 (€30,800) and during the America’s Cup finals October 12-27, rates move to about $41,000 (€37,400).
