Mysterious luxury yacht spotted off the coast of Nólsoy: Could J. K. Rowling be on it?

Alda Nielsdóttir

Early Sunday morning, at around 8 AM, a luxury yacht arrived off the coast of Nólsoy.

According to Marine Traffic, the yacht, Calypso, arrived from Reykjavík, Iceland, and is making a stop on its way to Bodoe, Norway.

At Tórshavn Harbour they don’t know much about the yacht, and when Portal.fo inquired about the yacht on Sunday afternoon, they had not been in contact with anyone aboard. It is thought that the vessel stopped for shelter, as the weather is said to get bad.

A month ago Icelandic media reported that J. K. Rowling, the world famous author of the Harry Potter books, visited Iceland on the very same yacht, which is currently located off the coast of Nólsoy.

She had rented the yacht with her husband Dr. Neil Murray and her youngest daughter, Mackenzie.

Is J. K. Rowling still on the yacht? Perhaps not. According to website yachcharterfleet.com , renting the yacht costs between 300.000 – 325.000 EUR a week, and being the wealthy woman that she is, the Harry Potter author would certainly have the means to rent the luxury yacht for a month.

According to yachtcharterfleet.com , Calypso’s interior layout sleeps up to 12 guests in 7 rooms, including a master suite, 1 VIP stateroom, 4 double cabins and 1 convertable cabin.

The yacht is registered in the Cayman Islands.

J.K. Rowling Visits Sorcery Museum During Ill-Timed Visit to Iceland

By Larissa Kyzer

  • August 10, 2020

J.K. Rowling spent recent days sailing around Iceland on her luxury yacht, Calypso, along with her husband, Neil Murray, and the couple’s daughter, Fréttablaðið reports. Rowling arrived in Reykjavík via private plane in late July and, since boarding her yacht, has made a number of stops at destinations such as Höfn, Nörðfjörður, Seyðisfjörður, Dalvík, Húsavík, and Akureyri.

The Harry Potter author even stopped in Hólmavík in the Westfjords this weekend to pay a visit to the Museum of Icelandic Sorcery and Witchcraft.

However, in light of her frequently transphobic public statements on social media, Rowling’s visit to the country seems particularly ill-timed, coinciding as it does with Iceland’s Pride Month, a confluence which drew the ire of many on social media.

“Hey @jk_rowling if you stop by Reykjavík on your tour of Iceland be sure to hop on the best bus,” tweeted one Icelander with a picture of the Transvagninn, the Strætó bus celebrating trans people in Iceland.

“Rowling is in Iceland on the main day of Pride. This shouldn’t be allowed,” wrote another.

“Is there someone in Hólmavík who can make a ‘terfs not welcome’ sign and display it?”  tweeted Pirate Party deputy MP Oktavía Hrund.

‘You have nothing to fear from people like me’

Prior to Rowling’s arrival in Iceland, trans activist, writer, and Trans Ísland chair Ugla Stefanía Kristjönudóttir Jónsdóttir, wrote an open letter to the author, which was published on gayiceland.is . The letter opened with a statement of solidarity with Rowling, a domestic abuse survivor.

“ What I also really wanted to address, which is something that I strongly detect in your words and stance,” they wrote, “is that you have nothing to fear from people like me. ”

“I am aware of all the amazing philanthropic work that you do,” Ugla Stefanía continued, “and all the wonderful projects you support with your charitable trust. In your essay that you released on your website, you said you were worried that ‘new trans activism’ would negatively impact your work.

I want to assure you that this is not the case, and I am sorry if you have been lead to believe otherwise. Transgender people certainly don’t have that power, nor do they wish to wield it.

The fight for an equal society regardless of your gender identity does in no way seek to erode such important work, but merely wishes for those who it impacts to be included in the conversation where appropriate.”

“Many of the arguments that I see put out there in the public domain are robbed of the human experience we all share” they conclude their letter. “If we were able to see that, even for a moment, I strongly believe we would find that all our fears, worries and concerns all stem from the same problem that we can fight together, to create a world where everyone is respected and loved exactly for who they are, regardless of gender, identity, physical characteristics or history.

J.K. Rowling’s transition from children’s author to wealth-displaying superyacht owner

A really huge white boat

By Tim Bousquet

This item originally appeared as News Item #5 in Morning File , June 24, 2024

J.K. Rowling is in town. Or at least, her yacht, the Samsara, is.

The boat arrived in port Saturday morning, arriving from Charleston, South Carolina. I don’t know whether Rowling decided to head north to avoid the record-shattering summer temperatures down south, or if the boat is simply heading back to merry old England to collect her, or if the Samsara is leased out to some other gazillionaire who has some business in town.

As of this morning, the Samsara isn’t yet scheduled to depart, so I assume whoever’s on the yacht is yucking it up about town for a few days. If you see a middle-aged woman harassing nonbinary and trans kids in the north end, let us know.

According to Superyacht Fan , the Samsara is 88.5 metres long, can house a crew of 27 with 14 guests, and has “a 5-meter circular swimming pool, a cutting-edge cinema, and a tranquil beach club.” I have no idea what a “tranquil beach club” means, but I’m guessing it involves lots of alcohol.

I don’t get rich people and their yachts. Seems like a gigantic hassle to me. First, you gotta keep up with the thing, pay all the staff and such. And then there’s the marine regulations, the fuel, the swabbing the decks, the scraping off the barnacles, and so forth. Sure, you can pay other people to take care of those details, but you still have to manage those other people. At some point, the chain of responsibility ends with you having to attend to shit, which in my mind is exactly the opposite of the freedom that wealth should bring.

“Samsara” is the Sanskrit word for… well, a bunch of stuff that I can’t relate to, but Buddhists use it to explain I think all of creation and life and death and reincarnation and pain and avoiding pain and maybe that feeling you get when you realize you can’t pay the rent on time but you’re going to order another drink anyway, I dunno. At some point words become so expansive in meaning that they mean nothing at all (see: AI, or god). But I no more understand Buddhists than I understand gazillionaires’ desire to own yachts, so maybe ask someone else.

Still and all, I can only understand the ownership of yachts (as opposed to simply paying to ride on someone else’s yacht) as being about the display of wealth. Surely Rowling isn’t spending two weeks crossing the Atlantic on that thing, being seen by no one at all as she pens her latest Twitter diatribe.

My guess is that the boat goes on without her to such and such a port, and then she jets in to town and gets a limo to the boat where everyone can see just how rich she is, and maybe they tool around Lunenburg for an afternoon before she gets back on the jet and displays her wealth somewhere else.

Again, if you have a lot of money, you can just go places and do things without all the possessions and the worries that come with them.

There’s something not-healthy about owning a superyacht. It reflects some feeling of inadequacy, a hole that can only be filled with the display of success, rather than by the success of a life well-lived that no one can see.

It’d be sad were it not so funny.

J.K. Rowling’s luxury yacht proves she’s still in her Egregiously Rich Umbridge era despite online hate speech

Nahila Bonfiglio

For years now, fantasy lovers have been forced to contend with a treasured staple of their childhoods and its connection to a writer who has willfully participated in transphobic remarks in recent years.

J.K. Rowling made her thoughts on transgender rights clear years ago, and since then she’s seen her popularity plummet — but not enough to hurt her where it counts. Her wallet is still overstuffed from decades of fervent Harry Potter passion, and — even as boycotts limit her future earning potential — she’s absolutely rolling in that Wizarding World cash.

So much so that she’s the proud owner of an eye-wateringly expensive yacht, which she uses to cruise around the world without needing to rub elbows with her many detractors . Those trans-exclusionary views haven’t made her many friends, but who needs friends when you have billions?

J.K. Rowling’s multi-million dollar yacht

J.K. Rowling yacht - the Samsara

It’s nothing new that J.K. Rowling is bafflingly wealthy, but many people would love to think that the wave of boycotts and outright rejection of Rowling and all of her properties would be enough to take her down a tax bracket. Unfortunately, Harry Potter is still a strong property and, with yet another adaptation of the once-beloved series in development, Rowling’s bank account isn’t set to drain anytime soon.

We all made Rowling a billionaire, and — unfortunately for everyone with empathy and kindness in their hearts — she used it to further the trans-exclusionary movement . Over the last few years she’s become the face of the radical feminist, transgender-erasing movement , and, no matter what we desire, that unfortunately makes Harry Potter complicit.

She made her money off our fandom, and for years she’s been pouring her more than $1 billion net worth into plenty of luxurious things, but among the most lavish is her $150 million yacht . Made in 2015, the Samsara Yacht boasts seven cabins for guests and 13 for crew, 88.5 meters in length, and a maximum speed of 20 knots. It also costs between $10 and $15 million annually to upkeep, so any dreams of Rowling’s coffers draining clearly remain unfulfilled.

We still have a chance to show Rowling how little approval her toxic exclusionary stance has among her one-time fans, particularly with the new W.B. series on the way. We likely won’t ever make her a pauper, but we can turn our backs on her bigoted ideologies and support transgender people by putting that Harry Potter money toward much more worthy causes .

Buy J.K. Rowling's Yacht for $19.2 Million

It seems everything author J.K. Rowling touches turns to gold. First, the chair she sat on while writing the first two Harry Potter books was auctioned off for charity, and now the famous creator of the wizarding world is selling her luxury yacht for $19.2 million. After purchasing it in either late 2015 or early 2017, Rowling is offering the chance to rent the 56-foot-long boat for $130,000 a week or even buy it outright, reports __ Variety . The vessel is special for another reason: It was once owned by Johnny Depp. The luxury yacht has three decks and fits ten people in four bedrooms and a master suite. (There are also five crew cabins.) Amenities onboard include kayaks, snorkeling gear, windsurfing equipment, wake boards, and two tenders. And if the weather isn't cooperating, wifi and video games are also available.

J.K. Rowling Is Selling Her $20 Million Yacht (With Interiors By...Johnny Depp)

Image may contain Vehicle Transportation Boat and Yacht

The mega best-selling Harry Potter series didn't just make J.K. Rowling famous—it made her rich enough to afford her very own luxury yacht. Although Rowling's yacht doesn't really resemble the giant pirate ship that brought the Durmstrang students to Hogwarts ahead of the Tri-Wizard Cup, it was previously owned by Pirates of the Caribbean star Johnny Depp , which is...close enough. Rowling bought the vessel , which Depp had named Amphitrite as an homage to then-wife Amber Heard, about a year ago for £22 million ($29 million) but is reportedly selling it at a loss with an asking price of €17.8 million ($20 million).

The yacht, which can accommodate up to ten people, has some pretty eye-dropping features, including a plush master bedroom suite with a king size bed, a formal dining room on the deck, and a cozy salon with ten large windows perfect for watching the sun set over the ocean . There's also top-of-the-line tech equipment and audio-visual equipment in case you feel like having a daylong Potter movie marathon. The bottom line: This boat is way nicer than the ones that Hogwarts first-years take to get across the lake. And how was there not a character named Amphitrite in Hufflepuff House?

This isn't the first time that Rowling has parted with some of her assets. In 2012, she sold the eight-bedroom Victorian mansion in Edinburgh where she had written the last four Potter books, for $3.6 million. Although Rowling's net worth was once estimated to be worth $1 billion, she has given away so much of her money to charity that she dropped off of the Forbes "world billionaires" list the same year that she sold her home. Her favorite causes are kid-related, most notably her own organization, Lumos (named for the Potterverse "let there be light" spell ), whose goal is to take poor and disabled children out of institutions and reunite or place them with families.

So far, no bidders have stepped forward to buy the yacht. But think about it—wouldn't a yacht be such a great place for a Quidditch match? Or a Yule Ball? Sadly, the decor was designed by Depp, and Rowling didn't change it, so there aren't any talking paintings, nearly-headless ghosts, or Rooms of Requirement on board. You can probably bring your own butterbeer, though...

What Yacht does J.K. Rowling Own?

  • Facebook Twitter Instagram Pinterest Youtube

NYC fashion writer blogging about all things lux. Attending New…

J.K. Rowling is one of the wealthiest authors in the world, and it’s no surprise that she owns a luxury yacht. But what yacht does she own?

J.K. Rowling, the author behind the wizarding world of Harry Potter, is no stranger to luxury. While her mainstay remains storytelling, her net worth has afforded her the opportunity to own one of the maritime pinnacles of luxury: a yacht. Rowling’s yacht was called the Amphitrite, a 56-meter motor vessel equipped with a multitude of high-end amenities. Even though Rowling sold the yacht in 2016, the Amphitrite continues to bear her signature.

Also did J.K. Rowling buy Johnny Depp’s yacht? Get all the details!

History of the Amphitrite

The Amphitrite has a storied provenance before its Rowling-era fame. Crafted by Turquoise Yachts in Turkey, this 56-meter masterpiece was launched in 2009. The yacht was originally owned by actor Johnny Depp and bore the name Vajoliroja—a portmanteau of the names of his then-girlfriend Vanessa Paradis and their two children, Lily-Rose and Jack.

Depp owned the yacht until 2015, when Rowling took ownership for a reported sum of $27 million. She renamed the vessel Amphitrite. Interestingly, Rowling parted ways with the Amphitrite in 2016, selling it for $19.2 million. Today, it sails under the flag of a U.S. businessman and goes by the name Arriva.

Inside the Amphitrite

The Amphitrite could house up to 10 guests across its four guest cabins and a master suite. The vessel also offered a full staff complement, employing a crew of five to ensure the ultimate level of comfort and service. As for amenities, it boasted a gym, Jacuzzi, sauna, and a selection of watersports equipment, making it the epitome of maritime indulgence.

Rowling’s Affair with the Amphitrite

During her tenure as the Amphitrite’s owner, Rowling did more than just vacation on it. The yacht served as a serene haven for her, friends, and family. In a 2015 interview, Rowling shared that she cherished the yacht as a “great place to relax and escape from the world.” The space, the amenities, and the opportunity for solitude contributed to her affinity for the yacht.

While it wasn’t used for any book launches or Harry Potter sequels, the Amphitrite was a sanctuary where Rowling could recharge her creative batteries. The yacht also played host to charity events, reflecting Rowling’s philanthropic inclinations.

Post-Sale and Chartering Ventures

Approximately two years after becoming the owner of the Amphitrite, J.K. Rowling chose to list the yacht for sale. The asking price was a cool $19.2 million. Beyond simply selling the yacht, Rowling took a unique approach by also making it available for charter. For those looking to taste the same level of luxury once enjoyed by the author, the yacht could be chartered for about $130,000 per week, not factoring in additional expenses such as fuel, food, and crew gratuities.

The Brokerage Mystery

While the yacht’s current whereabouts remain somewhat of a maritime enigma, there is some speculation worth noting. Industry murmurs suggest that the yacht was listed and eventually sold through Curtis Stokes at Curtis Stokes & Associates, a brokerage firm known for handling high-value yachts. While unconfirmed, if true, this would signify that the vessel had changed hands through a broker of noteworthy reputation.

Ownership Status

In clear terms, Rowling no longer owns the Amphitrite. Whether you refer to it by its original name, Vajoliroja, or its current moniker, Arriva, this floating indulgence is no longer part of Rowling’s portfolio. Though she had it for a brief period, during that time, the yacht served multiple purposes: a sanctuary for relaxation, a hub for social gatherings, and even a space for philanthropic activities. Even after its sale, the Amphitrite remains an intriguing footnote in Rowling’s expansive history of luxurious ownerships.

This added dimension to the Amphitrite’s journey post-Rowling adds another layer of complexity to the yacht’s already fascinating story. It’s a tangible example of how, even after the sale, luxury items like this continue to navigate through networks of affluence and opulence, always ready for the next chapter.

Environmental Considerations

While owning a yacht exudes a level of success and opulence, it’s worth acknowledging the environmental implications that come with such luxury. Yachts are known for their high fuel consumption and resultant greenhouse gas emissions. Additionally, they can disturb marine ecosystems.

However, a conscious yacht owner can mitigate some of these impacts by utilizing cleaner fuels and adopting energy-efficient technologies. The larger point here is that yacht ownership comes with a certain level of responsibility to the planet.

Pursuitist Final Take

The Amphitrite—once the floating palace of J.K. Rowling—illustrates that when it comes to maritime luxury, few stones are left unturned. While Rowling only owned the luxury yacht for a year, she utilized it as a private retreat and a venue for philanthropic efforts. Though she has since parted ways with this sea-faring spectacle, the Amphitrite remains tethered to her name, encapsulating a brief but memorable chapter in her life of affluence. And while the allure of yachting is undeniable, it offers a moment to reflect on the environmental responsibilities that come with extreme luxury.

J.K. Rowling’s Luxe Yacht Available to Rent or Buy (EXCLUSIVE)

J.K. Rowling , staggeringly wealthy author of the phenomenally popular “Harry Potter” novels that begat the blockbuster film franchise, has her celebrity-pedigreed yacht “Amphitrite” available for both charter and purchase. The 156-foot-long boat, formerly christened Vajoliroja and previously owned by Johnny Depp , can be chartered at a high-season rate of about $130,000 per week, plus expenses, and is also for sale, per online listings, at not quite $19.2 million. Ownership of multimillion-dollar water craft can be difficult to trace — they’re often owned through inscrutable offshore corporate ventures — but Depp is reported to have sold the boat in the fall of 2015 to an American businessman who quickly flipped it to Rowling sometime in late 2015 or early 2016 for about $27 million, substantially below its current price tag.

The classically styled and plushly furnished yacht includes a bohemian-luxe main deck salon with rich wood paneling, 10 windows decadently dressed with swagged and tasseled drapery, and a state-of-the-art entertainment system with satellite television. Teak-trimmed glass doors slide open to the covered aft deck where there’s a 10-seat, al fresco dining table and a curved bank of cushioned banquettes. The three-deck boat will comfortably accommodate 10 in four guest staterooms, all with postage stamp-sized en suite heads, plus a master stateroom with a dressing vestibule and a marble-accented bath. There are, additionally, a total of five crew cabins, and the well-stocked galley is capable of turning out gourmet meals.

Amphitrite, which cruises at a speed of 12 knots with 28,000-liter fuel tanks that give it a range of close to 2,500 nautical miles, provides state-of-the-art comforts such as air conditioning, on-board Wi-Fi, videogame consoles, and recreational equipment that includes kayaks, snorkeling gear, windsurfing and wake boards, and two tenders for water skiing and jaunts ashore.

Rowling’s terra firma residences include a Georgian-style townhouse on a swanky, guard-gated street in London’s highbrow Kensington neighborhood as well as Killiechassie House, a 19th century country mansion on close to 100 pastoral acres along the banks of the River Tay near Aberfeldy, about 75 miles north of Edinburgh.

The Pirates Of The Caribbean star owned the yacht when he was married to French singer Vanessa Paradis. Depp named the yacht the Vajoliroja – a pun on the Jolly Roger using the first two letters of Vanessa, Johnny and the names of their children, Lily Rose and Jack.

Its name was changed early last year when Depp sold the yacht after marrying Amber Heard. The 1930s-style superyacht can sleep ten guests.

As well as the master bedroom on the main deck, there are four other bedrooms and spacious dining, entertaining and relaxation rooms. It was available for charter this summer at more than £100,000 a week.

The for sale advert, placed on yacht brokers’ website Curtis Stokes & Associates, includes photos of the Amphitrite’s lavishly decorated interior, including patterned wallpaper and crushed velvet seating. There is also a dining area on deck.

A picture of the salon shows two separate seating areas with teak and glass double doors, sofas, end tables, coffee tables, lounge chairs and bar.

Included in the purchase price are artworks, two rigid inflatable tender boats and equipment for guests to enjoy waterskiing, windsurfing and kayaking.

No reason was given for the prompt sale and a representative for Miss Rowling said: ‘We will not be commenting on this as it is a private matter.’

However, a source close to the author said she had owned it for some time and ‘has made use of the yacht’. Losing £7million from buying and selling the Amphitrite will barely put a dent in Miss Rowling’s fortune.

She dropped off Forbes’ list of world billionaires four years ago, but this is understood to be a result of paying huge amounts in UK taxes and giving a large portion of her fortune to charity.

However she is still estimated to be worth hundreds of millions and last month was named the world’s third-richest author. Her first adult novel, The Casual Vacancy released in 2012, is still selling well and Miss Rowling continues to add to her earnings through Pottermore, the website she uses to sell Harry Potter e-books, as she held on to the rights rather than sign them over to her publisher.

Would You Buy JK Rowling’s Luxury Yacht, Designed By Johnny Depp?

By Sean Evans

Posted on Sep 13, 2016 4:13 PM EDT

3 minute read

JK Rowling, author of the Harry Potter series, was so enthralled with Johnny Depp’s luxury yacht after vacationing on it that she bought it. Depp sold her the 157-foot boat, christened the Amphitrite, for $28.9 million back in January,  according to the  Daily Mail . Which makes us wonder what the hell happened so quickly to make her want to offload the yacht for a $9.2 million loss? Did Rowling find  a chunk of Depp’s finger  somewhere in one of the cabins? Or did she simply tire of the emo pirate-chic aesthetic in which Depp heavily blanketed the interior?

Burgess , a charter service that oversees the renting out of such luxury yachts, describes the Amphitrite as “a yacht like no other. Behind her elegant 1930s gentleman’s yacht exterior lies an utterly modern charter yacht with state-of-the-art technology and limitless luxury. Feel the romance of a bygone era in her lavish, bohemian interior, pieced together with vintage velvet, Art Deco furniture and objets d’art.” Uh, sure. The exterior is indeed grand and stately, evoking an air of yesteryear, but once you get inside, your eyes will bleed from Depp’s “lavish” decor.

bed_inside_yachtlifeit.jpg

Depp spent about $7 million renovating the inside of the ship back in 2008. All five guest cabins were drenched in patterned velvet, an abundance of teak and mahogany and enough blinding, gilded trimmings to make a Rothschild fumble a monocle. Depp originally named it Vajoliroja, a pun on the Jolly Roger (when spoken), when giving it to ex-girlfriend Vanessa Paradis, but renamed it Amphitrite when giving it to soon-to-be-ex-wife Amber Heard. (We’re hazy on proper yacht gifting etiquette, but it would seem re-issuing a vessel to your new partner wouldn’t be quite kosher.)

While the boat’s “subtle pirate theme” is a massive understatement, the interior is also eerily reminiscent of rooms at Hogwarts, so perhaps that’s what drew JK Rowling to the ship in the first place? Maybe there was a sorting hat for when guests embarked which directed them to their appointed state rooms?

inside_boat.jpg

The twin CAT-diesel powered boat will steam along at a maximum of 13.5 knots, thanks to the 960-horsepower, and has a range of 2,240 nautical miles. It’ll sleep ten guests and nine crew, and features a salon, and plenty of entertaining spaces, with three different decks. It also has water skiing, wakeboarding, windsurfing, kayaking and snorkelling “capabilities,” and a suite of top-notch electronics. All of which are undercut by that damned interior. For the price, think this is worth it?

'Harry Potter' author JK Rowling's yacht visits US Southern states

T he mega yacht reportedly owned by "Harry Potter" author J.K. Rowling recently made a few stops at U.S. ports, causing local buzz along the way.

The writer's yacht, a vessel called the Samsara, was first spotted earlier this month off the coast of St. Augustine, Florida , according to Fits News. It then docked in Savannah, Georgia, until June 8, before making its way up the coast to Charleston Harbor, South Carolina.

It is unclear whether Rowling was onboard the super yacht during its travels to the Southern states. FOX Business has reached out to the author's publicist for further details.

According to Superyachtfan.com, the Samara is 290 feet long and was built in 2015 by Oceanco. The vessel has seven cabins for holding up to 14 guests, along with another 13 cabins for housing up to 27 crew members.

The luxury boat is worth an estimated $150 million and costs between $10 million and $15 million to operate annually, according to the site.

For those wishing to take it for a spin, the Samara is available for charter at YachtCharterFleet.com for around $1,179,000 per week. The site states that the yacht has a movie theater, swimming pool, elevator, beach club, gym and helicopter hangar.

Samsara also has an array of toys for guests to choose from, including Jet Skis, a Flyboard, a Kite Surfer, a seabob, wakeboards, kayaks and WindSurfers.

Rowling is the world's wealthiest author , with an estimated net worth of around $1 billion, according to a recent report by The Sun. However, she was famously booted from the Forbes billionaire list in 2012 after her charitable giving led to her net worth falling below that mark.

Rowling began writing the "Harry Potter" book series in the 1990s as a struggling single mother. Since then, she has sold more than 600 million copies globally, and the eight films based on the series have raked in more than $7.7 billion, according to IMBD.
